Greeting Residents and Tenants!

Who doesn’t love the inspiring feeling that you have when the entire year is in front of you waiting for you to fulfill all of your resolutions?

New Year’s resolutions are all about making changes… changing your body, changing habits or attitudes. Living in Shanghai, we’re all used to constant changes. Keeping up and pushing the envelope are the mottoes to live by if you want to stay ahead of the pack. And here at Shanghai Centre we constantly strive to be the leader of the industry.

As one of the first international complexes in Shanghai, we never cease upgrading our facilities in order to keep that competitive edge. Our four-year apartment renovation program will come to an end soon, with final completion by the first half of 2013. We appreciate everyone’s support and cooperation during this time, and a celebration is definitely in order when we complete the last unit! New Years must have new sights, and this year we are most looking forward to our all-new Japanese restaurant. Although Shanghai isn’t short of Japanese cuisine, this one will definitely provide a unique experience from the moment you step in the door. I tend to think the uniqueness of Shanghai Centre comes from our great mix of tenants, and this year a few tenants will present you with a whole new look: ParkwayHealth Dental, CVRVE Lounge and Gourmet Café, to name a few. Our top priority at Shanghai Centre is to provide our guests with a better living environment and to make your experience at Shanghai Centre wonderfully memorable.

Meet the woman behind

our luxury makeover Erming Zhang and I are strolling through the vestibule area of The Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel ballroom, navigating our way through a maze of Chinese antiques, some of which date back several centuries. The pieces are here for a special auction where it costs a cool 100,000RMB just for the privilege of raising your hand to make a bid. The artistry and craftsmanship of some of these pieces is breathtaking, and she is clearly captivated by the event that we just so happened to run into serendipitously while viewing her own work of art, which is the redesign of the ballroom, itself. Yet the antiques serve as an ideal starting point to a conver- sation about Zhang's own personal aesthetics and sense of style, which now permeate throughout Shanghai Centre, both here in the hotel, as well as in the apartment lobby areas and newly renovated penthouses. Those of us who live and work in Shanghai Centre have no doubt noticed the many changes afoot lately. A culmination of four years of hard work, this is the largest renovation Shanghai Centre has undertaken since its completion in 1990. The lobby areas in both the East and West apartment towers of Shanghai Centre have now been completely redone, featuring a new water pond, marble reception desk, and Venetian plaster ceilings, while the upstairs apartments and penthouses went through similarly major renovations, including new hardwood floors, color schemes and furniture redesigns. Gliding across the dark marble floors of the ballroom vestibule, a very understated, yet smartly dressed Zhang points out little touches here and there, such as the Chinese-lantern-style lighting in the hallways, and the new ceiling fixtures and crystal chandeliers that she employed to enhance the sense of flow and space of the rooms. Each of these things shares something in common with Zhang, most notably her appreciation for subtle beauty, simplicity, and timeless elegance. If one were to examine closely her arsenal of design secrets, one would find references to both modernism and minimalist Zen, but most importantly her touch is soft and subtle. The word "organic" comes to mind, as she seamless integrates modern with classical. What Zhang isn't, however, is overpowering or overbearing, as a designer like Philippe Starck might be perceived, stamping his work with a seal that blaringly conveys his own identity. "A lot of the work I did in my early career was in landmark buildings in New York City," she says. "I worked for a very renowned British architect named Sir David Chipperfield, in his New York Office. David is famous for modernistminimalism. We did projects like the Bryant Park Hotel, on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street, and the Lever House a classical modern building that is one of the first glassskyscrapers in New York, built in the 1950s. I think this

work really influenced me, using very modern details, including things like Italian furniture, but in the context of the renovation of a classical building." Zhang notes that while Shanghai Centre is still a very young building, rel- atively speaking, it still qualifies as a landmark building in the city, and thus she had to take special care in terms of not upsetting its delicate balance when conceiving the renovation plans. "Shanghai Centre is already more than 20 years old, and in that time there had not been any major renovations, so it quite clearly needed a breath of fresh air _ but at the same time nothing too radical," she says. "There's a certain upscale clientele at Shanghai Centre, so we didn't want to go for something that was too young or too modern, but still we wanted to keep up with the times. So I felt we really needed to do things like make the windows and the ceilings open up a lot more, using light and organizing space to make it more functional. We chose to use darker woods like wal- nut, which is very modern and trendy, and to open up the kitchens in the penthouses to integrate them more into the living space." Originally from Shanghai, Zhang earned a degree in archi- tecture in Canada at Dalhousie University, building her early working experience in New York City. "My inspiration as a designer comes a lot from travel, "she says, "But as an architect, we often say that it's your first job that really shapes you. Mine was working in an office in SoHo, where you have these old brick buildings but with showrooms that have very modern and stylish interiors and beautiful old wood floors. I think that aesthetic has always stuck with me." Zhang says that she initially left China in 1990 to study architecture and pursue a career overseas, only to be drawn back to Asia following the economic and building boom that has been so robust for architects and designers. After leaving North America, her first position was in Hong Kong, doing luxury homes for some of the city's wealthiest residents, such as billionaire Richard Li, chairman of the Hong Kong- based media conglomerate, PCCW. The design company Zhang worked for, Archasia, was owned, coincidentally, by Grover Dear, who also worked on the Shanghai Centrebuilding project with John Portman & Associates. After some

time, Zhang relocated to Shanghai and set up her own firm, EMZ+ Design, doing renovation and design work on luxury homes and hotels, including Shanghai Centre and The Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel. "I've always loved Shanghai Centre," she says. "So for me, it's a great honor to be able to take on this project. The more I become familiar with this building, the more I realize how well it was designed. The feng shui is just excellent. In terms of the renovation, I noticed that there's a sense of weightiness to Shanghai Centre, like the arch to the main entrance has many layers, as do the entrances to apartments, so I didn't want to add any sense of heaviness to that. Rather we went for something lighter, like anodized metal and lots of open glass, to offset the weightiness." After a quiet stroll through the ground level, we head up to the newly redesigned penthouses, passing through the refurbished lobbies, which do, in fact, seem far more light and open. The glass walls in the lobbies have been expanded and raised ceilings mark the entrances to the elevators on each floor, separating the space from the flow of the hall- way, as beautiful new carpets lead in each direction. "When I came to Shanghai Centre, I found a lot of very busy and detailed interior design within this already quite de- tailed building," Zhang says. "The penthouses used to have big wooden frames around the windows and when you drew up the curtains it took up almost half the space. Instead, I wanted to see the whole view to let the natural light and stunning view of downtown Shanghai come into the space. The result I think brings these apartments a whole gener- ation forward." As for what's next for Zhang, she says she has plenty of things on her plate. Her firm is currently bidding for another 5-star hotel renovation located on Nanjing Road, and she sees many more soon to come. "When I look back at what we accomplished with Shanghai Centre, I feel very proud," she says. "We were able to integrate something new into something a bit older. It's my wish that more businesses will choose to renovate older buildings than to demolish them. I hope they can see the beauty in preservation."

Shanghai Centreevents recap Do it the Thai wayAs all residents are already "experts" in Chinese cooking, it was time go a bit more south and try some Thai cuisine... The Cooking Workshop was once again the place to be but for this occasion an authentic Thai cook was leading the class... On the menu:Thai vege-table curry, pineapple fried rice and vegetable spring rolls! Attendees learned that making real curry is not as easy as it looks but in the end all went home satisfied and with some inspiration for the next dinner-party!

Holiday PartyAs always, the Christmas holiday party proved to be one of the most popular parties of the year. The team of The Portman Ritz-Carlton outdid themselves with the wonderful spread of Christmas treats and delicacies on hand. And it wasn’t just good food… there was the Chinese children’s choir which performed traditional Christmas carols, the not-so-traditional mime-act, the outstanding jazz performance from George Butts and, of course, a visit from Santa, himself!

Shaken, not stirred!Bar Fly? Ritz Fizz? The names might sound strange to most people, but not to the Shanghai Centre residents who attended our recent Cocktail Making class! The Ritz Bar was the place to be, and under the guidance of mixologist Shirley even the most exotic drinks became easy to make. Those who want to impress friends with an amazing cocktail at your next party, or just learn more about what goes into making a great drink, be sure you sign up for our next session!

Lost & forgotten in old ShanghaiThere’s always something new to discover in this fabulous city… during a two hour tour, residents roamed through a historic area known as Qiao Family Road which dates back to Shanghai’s earliest origins. Participants met up with one of the sole survivors from this well-respected family, learned more about the sometimes colorful, sometimes tragic past that’s hidden in the city’s small streets and old neighborhoods. Definitely a tour to remember!

Coffee morning recapIt’s been all about “beauty” during our recent coffee mornings… Valerie Wu taught residents how tie a few Chinese knots that enhance your gifts with a touch of Oriental flavor; Florence showed the ladies how to care for their skin and apply basic makeup to achieve flattering looks in a matter of minutes; and Dawn prepared a great presentation on fascinating tra-ditional textiles of China’s ethnic minorities. Never a dull moment for the ladies!

Meet the people working at Shanghai Centre

What’s a typical day like for you?Receive money, receive money, receive money…

Do you ever pay money? No. Never. Only receive.

Sounds like a great job!It is! But it’s all just numbers on a screen to me. I rarely see cash.

It seems that there are an unusual number of Chinese girls who are accountants. Is this something that Chinese parents encourage daughters to do?Yes, I think so. In Chinese, we say ‘yi ji zhi chang’ – you should have some kind of special skill that makes you useful.

Do you enjoy your work?Very much so. I get to talk to all kinds of people from around the world. I know that 99 percent of them don’t want to answer my phone call because it usually means they owe money. But communication is a big part of my work. You’re probably good at bargaining with street vendors.I am! The secret is to talk as fast as you possibly can and keep insisting on a lower price without giving in.

Who pays when you go out with your boyfriend? He does, since we’re not married yet. After we get married, I’ll take very good care of his money because I’m an accountant!
