Internaonal Day
Next Wednesday, March 23 is Internaonal Day in the Elementary
School at ISM. This is a day for our students to acknowledge and
share where they come from, and for us as a school to celebrate
our diversity. As in previous years, our Middle School students
are invited to aend the flag ceremony in the morning, and
together we will unfurl 98 flags represenng 97 countries in the
ES and MS. We will begin with the flag for the United Naons, followed by the flag of the Philippines, and then all the countries
in alphabecal order.
The flag ceremony will be in the Elementary Playground beginning
at 8:30am, led by our Student Council. Grade levels will then be
celebrang in various ways throughout the day so please refer to
your class teacher for specific details. Grades 3 and 4 will also be
celebrang with music from around the world, in their annual
concerts hosted in the Fine Arts Theater. The Grade 3 concert
starts at 9:30am and the Grade 4 concert at 1:00pm. Students are
invited to wear clothes that represent who they are and where
they come from, for this final day of the third quarter.
Internaonal Day is a me to for us to step back and appreciate
our unique context as an internaonal school, and to celebrate
our students’ mullingualism and internaonal
mindedness. Many of our children belong to mulple naonalies ‐perhaps born in one country, with parents of two
naonalies, living now in the Philippines, having previously lived in another country. Others belong to our host country
born here and proud to be Filipino. And there are of course many other circumstances, including those where our
students are experiencing a new culture for the first me, or have another naonality but were born here in Manila. All
of us, with our diff erent family backgrounds, languages, cultures, and flags, belong to this incredibly dynamic and diverse
yet connected and supporve learning community at ISM where, as stated in our Mission, our community acknowledges
and celebrates our di ff erences and encourages empathy, compassion, understanding and respect for human dignity. Nex
Wednesday’s Internaonal Day gives us all an opportunity to pause and pay aenon to how amazing it is to be so
diverse as a community, yet so united and harmonious.
We look forward to welcoming you next Wednesday.
