Introduction

Modern cell phones and tablets are capable of much more

than just sending and receiving phone calls. Mobile

devices used today coupled with the Internet have greatly

revolutionized the ways we do things, especially the ways

we communicate, work, learn, transact businesses, and

play. They make it possible and easy to manage our lives

on the go. Access to the Internet makes it possible to use

many advanced features and save communication cost on

our mobile phones and tablets. However, there are more

things we can do with them without Internet connection.

CommunicationPrimarily, mobile phones are for the exchange of information.

Modern day communication on mobile phones has gone beyond

ordinary telephone calls; it has been revolutionized by the

Internet, making it possible to make Internet calls, send and

receive text messages and emails, and use several other

platforms that can be managed on our mobile devices to

communicate. This provides the opportunity for individuals to

connect and interact without regard for geographic location.

Examples include Skype, Facebook, WhatsApp and other

interactive media.


Directory Management

Keeping a list of names,

addresses, phone

and other facts about

people and businesses is

a common feature on our

information of any kind. Users with Internet-enabled mobile devices

more, with the help of search engines and wiki sites like Google, Bing,

Ask, About and Wikipedia.

assets can be done on mobile phones and tablets. There are several

mobile applications that can be used for electronic book keeping &

accounting, sales management and record keeping.

Examples of Android Applications for electronic accounting are

iReap, TapPOS, MoA Point of Sale and more.


Typing and Printing of Documents

Preparation and printing of text documents, spreadsheets, and

presentations are now possible on smartphones and tablets. With

mobile office applications, documents can be formatted like we do

on desktop computers; and with e-Print feature, documents can

be printed, either wirelessly or with cable.

Examples of applications for preparation of document are

WPS Office, Office 360, Smart Office, Polaris Office, Google Doc,

and more.

Recognition to lock your device and/or some apps to prevent

unauthorized access; or activate ‘Guest Mode’ when you are not

working around it. Your phone or tablet is personal to you.

GPS and LocationFor security reason, don’t turn on your location when you don’t

need it. Turning it on makes your current location visible to

everyone on the Internet.



Know the Applications You Install

Know the applications and browser plugins you install.

As we have useful and resourceful mobile application, there are

also some dangerous applications, such as spyware and

malware.

A spyware is a computer program that watches what people do

with their computers or mobile devices, and then sends that

information over the Internet. A malware is designed to damage

the way a computer or mobile device works.



Keep Your Phone CleanAvoid keeping sensitive information such as ATM PIN or

password on your phone. If someone has your phone, he can see

your secret codes and use them to defraud you.



Avoid Generic NamesWhen saving contact details, avoid giving common generic

names such as Honey, Sweet Heart, My Hubby, My Secretary,

and My Boss. If you lose your phone to the hand of a fraudster,

generic names make it easier for him to use the contacts to

defraud you and/or those people.

Nothing is bad in saving your spouse’s or boss’ contact details in

his/her name.



Confirm Before You GiveAnybody from anywhere can call or message you anytime to give

some sensitive information. Don’t be too nervous when anyone

calls you on phone regarding anything; always confirm the

authenticity of the call/message and the caller/sender before you

give any sensitive information.



In Case of Emergency (ICE)Store important information that may be needed by rescuers and

doctors in case of an emergency involving you in ‘ICE’

application. If this app does not come with your mobile device,

you can get it from your Mobile App Store, such as Google Play

Store on Android devices.



Activate Antitheft AppAntitheft feature can prevent your device from being stolen, or help

you locate it and wipe its data if already stolen. Antitheft application

(e.g. Android Device Manager) makes it possible to remotely

control one or more security settings on your smartphone or tablet.

The manager, on Android devices, enables user to remotely ring

their device, change their device password and add a screen lock

with a display message to the device from anywhere anytime.

This feature can be activated under the security settings of most

devices. Some antivirus software also provide this service.

Conclusion

Mobile phones and tablets used today coupled with the Internet

have become very important tools for managing our everyday

lives on the go. They have features for managing the ways we

communicate, work, transact businesses, learn and play in cost

effective and more convenient ways; they allow users to send

and receive text messages, emails, photos and video, access

resources on the world wide web, play games, listen to music,

use GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and more. These features

are needed to improve communication and operational

effectiveness and efficiencies everywhere people congregate. At

the same time, we need to stay safe while using them.
