as part of a multi-faceted program to help returnees, internally
displaced people, and host communities attain sustainable livelihoods

A member of Rescue South Africa practices a high angle rescue as part of a university-accredited training course to introduce students to
rope rescue equipment and techniques. USAID/OFDA and Rescue South Africa have worked together since 2000 to bolster the quality and
quantity of trained urban search and rescue personnel in Africa.

a disaster victim during a Community Action for Disaster Response
simulation. As part of this course, first responders learn to prioritize
and manage multiple situations caused by natural hazards.

Matilda Blake, age 85, not only single-handedly manages her family farm in Jamaica, she
also serves as an emergency shelter manager when natural disasters threaten the island.
Like many other older persons, Matilda is an active participant in USAID/OFDA-supported
disaster preparedness training sessions offered by HelpAge International that help the
community better prepare for future disasters.
