My brother died for useless things, cheap toilet paper and an umbrella that he knew nothing about. It is clear that the guy wanted to kill him.” These were the words of Lebogang Suipers’s (27) sister, Olebile Louw, who is confident that her brother would never have gone looking for trouble. Suipers reportedly died in the arms of his mother, Martha Suipers (58), on Saturday (14/03) after being stabbed in the heart following an argument with the suspect. His mother was left traumatised by the incident, as she could do nothing to save her son, whom she stayed with. According to the family, the suspect stabbed Suipers after accusing him of taking his goods – some toilet paper and an umbrella that he had allegedly stolen from a Chinese shop next to the deceased’s home. The suspect reportedly hid the items he had stolen under a bush in Lebogang’s yard and left. On his return, he could not find the goods. Suipers reportedly came from inside the house and the confrontation ensued. “I was not home and was called by my mom to help, as Lebogang had been stabbed,” said Louw. “Upon rushing home, I found my mom, assisted by a passer-by, calling the ambu- lance and the police, with Lebogang at her feet. She was very nervous and asked me to rush to the police station, which is just around the corner from our house, for assistance in sending an ambulance. “According to my mom, she and Lebogang had been doing laundry together as usual when he left the house after removing the clothes from the washing line. “She said she had just heard Lebogang shouting, ‘Mom, please call an ambulance, I have been stabbed in the heart’. Lebogang had said this lifting his T-shirt and showing my mom the wound in his chest. “My mom rushed to the other room to fetch her phone and did not find Lebogang in the kitchen where she had left him. She went outside to look for him and found him on the ground, struggling to breathe. “She called a passer-by to help her.” According to Louw, the family was still puzzled by the fact that the police never came when they were called. She said not even the ambulance came on time. “On my return from the police station, I found the pathologists at home and my brother already covered. “Netcare 911 arrived later and attended to my mom, who was in shock.” In a press statement, Santi Steinmann, the media liaison officer of Netcare 911, stated that their paramedics had arrived at the scene and had found the lifeless body of a man lying on the ground. Upon assessment, they found that the man had already died prior to their arrival due to the extensive injuries sustained during the incident. “There was nothing more that could be done for the man and he was declared dead at the scene.” The Kagisho police have confirmed they are investigating a case of murder after the body of a 27-year-old man was found on Saturday. “It is alleged that the deceased was stabbed with an unknown object in the left side of his rib cage,” said Lt. Andrea Cloete in a statement. ) Maj. Dimakatso Mooi has stated that a 37-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday (16/03) after information had linked him to the murder. FREE SCREENING for blood pressure, blood glucose, urine testing and HIVcounselling and testing (HCT) was done byhealth-care professionals at the HomesteadShopping Complex recently.Community members heeded the call last

Thursday (12/03), and took advantage ofthis opportunity in observation of WorldKidney Day.Under the theme for 2015, Kidney health

for all, the department was satisfied withthe turnout. Before 12:00 three full pages of the

register had already been filled out bymembers of the public.Trained nurses attended to the communi-

ty members and performed rapid HIVtests, blood pressure, glucose and urinetests to determine kidney failure andirregular sugar levels, which is reported tobe a risk factor.According to Sr Rose Rautenheimer, who

is the transplant co-ordinator at theKimberley Hospital, the communityresponded well to the programme andshowed a lot of commitment.“The community understands our

concern and that we aim to detect theproblem at an early stage. We also encour-age them to test every six months.“The most cases we came across were of

detecting blood traces and protein in apatient’s urine, which is a risk factor,”said Rautenheimer. She said they referred these cases to the

nearest clinic and took down the patients’contact details to do follow-ups.Lulu Mxekezo, spokesperson of the

Department of Health in the province, saidin a press statement that early detection offailing kidney function was crucialbecause it offered a window to implementtreatment before end-stage kidney damageor cardiovascular problems occurred.“Screening is critical for those people

considered to be at high risk of kidneydisease, like diabetes and hypertensionpatients, individuals who are obese orsmokers, adults over 50 years of age andpeople with a family history of kidneydisease, diabetes mellitus and/or hyperten-sion,” Mxekezo added. She called on all community members to

check if they were at risk for kidneydisease and encouraged more people totake a simple kidney function test.

MIXED emotions were displayed by resi-dents of Bloemanda when Klaas Riet (53) wasevicted from a house that he had beenstaying in for the past 23 years.

The angry residents, who said they hadbeen threatened with arrest by the police, tried to stop the eviction from taking place.

While Riet was at work last week Wednes-day (11/03), his wife called to tell him theSheriff of the Court had arrived with a teamof men and police officers, displaying a letterof eviction to throw them out.

On arriving at the house, where the Riets’furniture and all their belongings werepacked out on the street, Express NorthernCape was met by the angry residents, someshouting and some crying for the couple andtheir two children who had been thrown out.

The last edition of Express Northern Capereported on the three parties at loggerheadsover the house in Goitsimang Street.

Riet claimed that he had bought the housefrom the previous owner, Emily Langa, whohad passed away in 2010, for R10 000. Shehad, however, never made the change ofownership, leaving the house to her twochildren, Nomvula Kok and Isaac Langa.

Kok was alleged to have made attempts toevict Riet from the house after the funeral, and claimed that she did not have anyknowledge of the R10 000 agreement.

She claims they had agreed with Langa togive the house to her daughter, who is nowmarried. Langa, who said that Kok should beashamed of herself, claimed they all knewabout the money and had shared it amongstthree of them (himself, Kok and his mother).

Langa said that Riet was entitled to stay inthe house and dared his sister to contact himif she had something to say about it.

On Wednesday, Langa was furious to findRiet’s belongings out on the street. Armedwith tools and a new door lock, he brokedown the door that had been locked by thesheriff, changed the locks and handed Rietthe new set of house keys.

“This is also my house. I am a 50% ownerwith Nomvula. Her trick of fraudulentlychanging ownership at the High Courtwithout my knowledge did not work, as Ihave reversed everything,” said an angryLanga in front of the chanting residents.

“I want you to write this. Nomvula notashamed of throwing out this old man afterenjoying his money.

“Now she wants to benefit from it. She

knows very well that we are all to blame fornot changing ownership of the house intoRiet’s name. The man trusted us andwaited.”

According to Riet, he had paid the R10 000in instalments while he worked at Cemforce.Kok was always present when he took themoney to her mother, with whom she stayed.

“I am not so stupid to knowingly look aftersomeone’s house for 23 years. Nomvula is the

one who even asked me when we were goingto make the change of ownership when Itook the last instalment. I am very disap-pointed,” said Riet.

According to Langa, he and his sister weresummoned to the High Court the day afterthe eviction, where they were instructed notto take any action concerning the house untilthe court had ruled on the matter.

Another date will be set for the hearing.

EVERYONE waited on Isaac Langa, whosent the message for them not to worry, ashe was on his way.

ISAAC LANGA, who claims to be 50% owner of the house, broke open the locks andinstructed the Riets to move back into thehouse.

RESIDENTS assisted in moving the furniture back into the house after the locks hadbeen broken.

A GROUP of hard-workingemployees in Warrenton are notonly workers at WarrentonSuperchicken, they also co-ownthe company that is situatednext to the N12. They are peoplewho ensure that you enjoy thechicken that you purchase fromyour local supermarkets.Warrenton Superchicken is not

a big company, but from thetime they started in 2002 totoday, they have had their fairshare of troubles and triumphs.According to the members

involved, the first phase ofstarting the business was sodifficult that some of themembers gave up and left, butthose who stayed and werepatient enough to wait, nowknow that the recipe to successis patience.“The year 2013 was a turning

point for us,” said MabelMotlhale the business adminis-trator, who was accompanied byher colleague Rebecca Pitso, theproduction manager, during theinterview.“In 2002 we acquired this farm

where we are now and started aco-operative. We started thisfarm with the hope of movinginto other forms of farming at alater stage, but the chickenfarming did not succeed and wewere stuck in limbo for 11 years.“We got lucky in 2013 when

24 ha farm is an empowermentgesture from government to thecommunity of Warrenton. The abattoir section of the

farm has invigorated thebusiness, because they grow thechickens, and are responsible forthe final packaging as theslaughtering is now donein-house.The farm has seven chicken

coups, which have a 62 000holding capacity.Motlhale, however, said that

they could afford to house only7 000 chickens at a time, becauseof the limited market. This isseen as a loss as the available

space is not being fully utilised.“We are looking for a broader

market because we are currentlyonly supplying individuals inour community.“We hope to spread to other

provinces to widen our market,”said Motlhale. The Warrenton Superchicken

farm has 53 workers, of whom 17are temporary workers.Motlhale believes that if they

can find a market, they willdefinitely need more staff andthis will help decrease unem-ployment in the community.Pitso and Motlhale took the

Express Northern Cape reporteron a tour through the abattoir,to offer first-hand experience onhow the slaughtering process isconducted. The chickens are brought from

the chicken coups in crates andare put on a scale to measuretheir weight. In preparation for the slaugh-

ter the chickens are shocked inorder not to stress them whenthey are slaughtered. After being slaughtered they

are then moved to a hot-waterpot before being put in aplucking machine.According to Motlhale, they

package their chickens in 2 kgand 5 kg bags of mixed portions, livers, hearts, necks and intes-tines at the abattoir.“We know for instance that in

the course of our operation a vetcan drop in at any time.“So we carry out our slaughter

process in accordance with theindustry’s rules and regulations.“The SPCA and Department of

Labour also drop in from time totime,” said Motlhale. When asked about the shop at

the entrance of the farm,

Motlhale said it was used fordistribution purposes.Pitso proudly pointed out the

and said that they were notaffected by load shedding.) Go to our website www.ex-press-news.co.za for the video.

“We got lucky in 2013 whenthe Department of Agricultureand Land Reform in the North-ern Cape province came to ouraid and pushed us.”Motlhale said that the depart-

them with a grant.According to Motlhale, the

THE Tsantsabane Field Band cannow easily access youth fromneighbouring areas, thanks toKumba Iron Ore, a business unitof Anglo American, providing arefurbished second-hand vehicleto further the cause of youthdevelopment.

According to Cindy Ramnaray-an, communications practitionerat Anglo American, the donationwas part of social and communitystrategy efforts aimed at address-ing the gaps in the key focusareas: education and skillsdevelopment; healthcare andsocial well-being; enterprisedevelopment; local procurement;and training, employment andother opportunities for previouslydisadvantaged individuals.

She said in a press release thatthe Kolomela Mine had beensupporting the Tsantsabane FieldBand Foundation, a nationalyouth development programmethat teaches life skills andpromotes the holistic development

of marginalised youth through themedium of music, dance and lifeskills, since 2013.

“Kumba Iron Ore, a businessunit of Anglo American, throughits youth development in theTsantsabane Municipal Area, became a strategic focus area dueto the societal issues and pres-sures young people are facingtoday.

“They face many challengingelements, like substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and schoolabsenteeism and drop-out at anearly age,” Ramnarayan said.

“The lack of recreation andaccess to relevant information oneconomic opportunities orservices for our youth alsoimpact negatively on theirdevelopment, additionally wor-sened by a weak civil societypresence.

“Kumba, together with itspartners, is committed to contrib-uting to addressing the socio-eco-nomic challenges young people

face by creating a positiveinfluence in their lives throughinitiatives like sport, arts andculture programmes.

“Through these initiatives, weassist them to grow their talentsand potential and invest in thembecoming future leaders in ourcommunities.”

Peter Aaron, regional opera-tions manager of the Field BandFoundation, revealed that trans-port had always been challenging, and as a result had limited theflexibility of the TsantsabaneField Band tutors and manage-ment for practice sessions.

NASHADA NDANGO, a gr. 11learner of the !XunkhwesaCombined School in Platfontein, shares her experience of flying inan aeroplane for the first timeand being treated like a realentrepreneur in Johannesburg. She and a fellow learner, JasonMarenda, represented the school, which was announced the provin-cial winner of the Education WithEnterprise Trust (EWET) Entre-preneurship Programme.

I WOULD like to share with youmy experience at the exhibition atSci Bona in Johannesburg.

First of all, I must mention thatthe aeroplane trip was amazing. Icould not stop looking down at theclouds. To think, I was above thoseclean, white clouds.

After we had arrived at the O.R.Tambo International Airport inJohannesburg, we took a shuttle tothe hotel where we were verywarmly welcomed.

That evening we had a meetingwhere we were informed of all therules and regulations.

The next day we went on aneducational tour sponsored byEskom during which I learnt a lot.

For the next week we were at SciBona. We had to put together ourown cubicle with some help from

the Eskom guys.We packed out our products and

prepared ourselves to present it tothe customers.

We attended workshops where weeach did presentations on differenttopics on entrepreneurship. Here Ireally learnt a lot about being anentrepreneur.

We met a lot of business peopleand even received proposals from

some of them to help us in startingour own business. We were alsoexposed to many different businessideas.

I would like to thank the EWETand Eskom for giving us theopportunity to be exposed to somuch. It was my first time awayfrom home. I enjoyed it very muchand I also made new friends fromdifferent provinces.
