development, use, sharing, and dissemination of geospatial data on a national basis.
• Provides executive, managerial, and advisory leadership, direction and oversight for geospatial decisions and initiatives across the Federal government.
• Facilitates coordination between agencies, governments, academia, industry and professional organizations in developing geographic information and technology via a National Strategy.
• Act as the interagency coordinating body for National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI)-related activities.
• Promotes the efficient, transparent, accountable, and effective use of geospatial information in meeting national requirements.

Desired Future State of NSDI
• Create network of resources
and services
• Facilitate discovery, access
and application of resources
• Leverage shared standard-
based services
• Develop core set of
information layers that
interface with nonspatial
data
• Use real-time data feeds and
sensor webs
A Shared Vision for the NSDI
11
The FGDC has worked with partners and stakeholders,
including the members and organizations represented on
the National Geospatial Advisory Committee, to
collaboratively define a shared national vision that
describes the value that the NSDI will bring to its
stakeholders and partners.
NSDI Vision Statement
The NSDI leverages investments in people, technology, data,
and procedures to create and provide the geospatial knowledge
required to understand, protect, and promote our national and
global interests.

The Arctic Spatial Data Infrastructure (Arctic SDI) A collaboration between the Arctic Council and the national mapping authorities of the
Arctic
Arctic SDI Vision An Arctic SDI - based on sustainable co-operation between mandated national mapping
organisations -will provide for access to spatially related reliable information over the Arctic to facilitate monitoring and decision making.
Benefits
Improve basis for decision making, through the provision of facts to better facilitate economic development, integrated planning, developing infrastructures and performing search and rescue operations, while managing impacts on the Arctic environment and society
What is The Arctic SDI?
The National Mapping Agencies of the member states of the Arctic Council are collaboratively developing data, policies, technologies and standards
Need
Integrated maps and applications covering the Arctic region that gives arctic politicians, governments, scientists, schools, private enterprises and citizens access to geographically related thematic data, digital maps and tools
Mission To provide the best Geodata in the Arctic and support tools for data discovery,
access and sharing.

The GSDI Association, the U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee, and the GISCorps of URISA are partners in GSDI Small grants program and in 2014 Natural Resources Canada provided funding through GeoConnections, its national collaborative initiative. The three types of awards available are a cash award of up to US$ 2500 per project, SDI/GIS consulting services up to the value of US$ 2500, or a combination of cash award and SDI/GIS consulting services. The award recipients are encouraged to provide in-kind services. Highlights of recent program accomplishments include:
• Hosting numerous workshops to provide training on concepts, exchange ideas, and build relationships for future SDI work in Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe;
• Geospatial metadata training, outreach, and generation in Ethiopia and Nigeria;
• Activation of a geospatial portal in Ethiopia; • Expansion of Rwanda’s GeoPortal; and • Initialization of geospatial portals in Uganda and
Zimbabwe.
Use of GIS and SDI in promoting Coffee Quality in Maraba Sector South Province of Rwanda
• Developing a new GSDI Strategic Plan 2015-2020
• Serve on the Board of Directors
• Supporting the Grants Program
