In the Midst of Sunnidale Park Reservoir Construction otice some upheaval around Sunnidale Park lately? Not to worry, it’s just our City’s latest project in meeting Barrie’s growing needs: the Sunnidale ParkWater Reservoir. Plans for a new addition to the current water and supply system stemmed from the 2009 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Notice of Completion. The assessment indicated that an additional potable water system in Pressure Zone 2 North was needed to ensure that the existing and future potable water demands are met. The assessment also specified Sunnidale Park was the preferred location for the new reservoir and its accompanying booster pumping station. Zone 2 North encompasses the mostly residential/commercial mix area north of Wellington Street and Blake Street and east of Anne Street North. The future reservoir will supplement our existent water system of 13 active groundwater supply wells, six storage reservoirs (three elevated and three in-ground), six booster pumping stations, and associated distribution piping. Although adequate in meeting current and short term demands, the existing system will not meet out-to-boundary water demand and lacks storage volume. As a result, construction in Sunnidale Park began January 2012 on a 18.4 million litre buried reservoir with dimensions of approximately 91.5 metres by 38.5 metres and a two-storey 9 metre by 17 metre pumping station that includes pumps, standby power, chlorination equipment, process pipework, electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation.
