A Portuguese vessel reportedly ran aground near Warrnambool in the 1500s. This local legend is supported by the discovery of old Portuguese charts that depict Australia’s southern coastline as far as Armstrong’s Bay. It is believed these charts were drawn in the 1520s.

Small township situated on the mouth of the Curdies River. Great golf course.
One of the best known features of this part of the coastline has changed considerably over the past 20 years. The arch linking the ‘bridge’ to the mainland collapsing in January 1990. The Island Arch in the Loch Ard Gorge precinct collapsed forming two sea stacks in June 2009.
The coastline shows clearly the extent to which sea erosion has occurred over millions of years. The famous landmark ‘Needle Rock’ subsided into the cove in 1985.
A long walk over sand dunes to fishing beach, ideal for exploring reefs and rock pools at low tide.
32km stretch of scenic and historic coastline incorporating a magnificent series of sheer cliffs, deep caverns, great archways, grottos, island gorges, blowholes and spectacular off-shore rock stacks.
Small settlement on the mouth of the Gellibrand River.
Named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 when he sighted the high cliffs in moonlight between squalls.Ship anchor visible at low tide.

The iron clipper ‘Loch Ard’ foundered in 1878 claiming 49 lives. The 2 young survivors Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce were washed into the gorge. Their story comes alive on the 9 metre high aquascreen at “Shipwrecked” screened nightly at Flagstaff Hill, Warrnambool.
