We have a fully OFSTED inspectednursery providing excellent childcarefacilities. Students may not have to payto use the College nursery.

VOLUNTEERING

Our Careers Guidance Team is here tohelp every student choose the rightcourse and to provide advice andguidance to assist them in planningtheir future career.

APPRENTICESHIPS

FULL-TIME & APPRENTICESHIPS PROSPECTUS 2014/15/bacoll /bishopcollege

Apprenticeships are practical, hands-on programmes designed to provide you with relevant,practical training, which will enable you to progress within your chosen industry. Apprentices arepaid a minimum of £2.68 per hour (October 2013).

HOW DO I FIND AN EMPLOYER?

You will need to find an employerwilling to take you on as an apprentice.Whilst the College provides a supportservice to help you find an employer,we cannot guarantee you a job.

There are lots of switched onemployers looking for switched onapprentices. A bit of planning andinvestigation will give you the edge.

You can start the ball rolling byapplying to companies whilst still atschool, with a view to being taken on as an apprentice once you leave.

They may also want you to do somework experience before leaving school.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR JOBS?

It looks easy – and it can be if you putin the preparation. If you haven’t hadmuch experience at job hunting don’tworry, the College can help with CVpreparation and interview techniques.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

If you secure a job, the College willwork with you and your employer tobegin your Apprenticeship as soon aspossible. If you do not have a job, youshould still apply for an Apprenticeshipand we will invite you to attend aninterview. It is a good idea to visit theCollege website to look for vacanciesand come along to one of our openevenings. You can also register with theNational Apprenticeship Service.

Apprentices start at Level 2 unless you have suitable knowledge andvocational experience in your chosen field.

You will work with an employer four days per week and spend one day per week training at the College or in your workplace, working towardsyour qualification.

Matthew Phillippo, a Plumbing apprentice at Bishop Auckland College, received the prestigious J.B. Wilkinson Shield award from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers after recently completing a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Plumbing andDomestic Heating.

The 18 year old, who works for K Hewitt & Co in Bishop Auckland,said: “I am honoured and privileged to have received such a prestigiousaward. I would like to thank my employer Craig Hewitt, who was willingto take me on as an apprentice, and Bishop Auckland College and my tutor Peter Roe for supporting me on my course and equipping me with the knowledge and experience that I have gained.”

Guests experienced the Michelin star treatment at the recentlaunch of the College’s Ambition Restaurant earlier this year.

Award winning chef James Close ran thekitchen at the restaurant, where dinersenjoyed a five-course taster menu showcasingfood from the North East’s only Michelin starvenue – The Raby Hunt at Summerhouse nearDarlington.

James has joined forces with the College to help deliver its new Level 5 HND HospitalityManagement course, running a MichelinMasterclass for students on the two-yearprogramme.

To launch the new partnership, James workedwith catering students at his own restaurant toprepare a special gourmet menu. James and histeam, assisted by 12 catering and hospitalitystudents, then cooked and served the food at theCollege restaurant for their guests, who includedlocal headteachers, chefs, business leaders andjournalists.

ENGINEERING OPERATIONSOR MANUFACTURINGOPERATIONSAPPRENTICESHIP

The College runs Apprenticeshipsin Engineering Operations andManufacturing Operations. You willdevelop your skills in theworkplace for four days per weekwith a local engineering companyand spend one day per week beingtaught by qualified staff.

Entry requirements

• Level 2: Minimum four GCSEs atgrade A-D including Maths andEnglish. Alternatively you mayhave completed a suitable full-time programme at Level 1.

Engineering and Construction Week10 – 14 March 2014Come along to Bishop Auckland College’s Engineering andConstruction Week where we'll be hosting the 'Bridges toschools' project – pupils will build, walk across and deconstruct a bridge, learning about bridges, teamwork and civil engineering.

Hitachi is planning to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in theBishop Auckland College catchment area. The Japanese firm intends to employ

730 staff to manufacture trains for the UK and European markets. This is part of a£4.5 billion contract to build and maintain inter-city trains in County Durham.
