Kathryn Otoshi Visit Thursday, December 2, 2010 @ 6:30p.m.Parents, please join us for a chat with author, Kathryn Otoshi this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Having seen two Kathryn Otoshipresentations, I can tell you that she is very talented, engaging, humorous and has a special gift of being able to tap into thehuman psyche. Much of what she writes and shares tugs at your heartstrings. I promise you it will be 45 minutes well-spent.Please remember that this session is for our parents only. Our students will attend morning assemblies with her on

Thursday and a number of the students will have an opportunity to participate in workshops with her either illustrating, writing,and/or story-telling in the afternoon.

Many thanks to our Garden Gate PTA for sponsoring the Otoshi assemblies for our students, as well as afternoon workshopswith her for many of our students, and her parent presentation in the evening.

Sponsoring authors visits is just one of the many wonderful ways our PTA supports Garden Gate School. We invite you tostay for the PTA meeting following the session with Ms. Otoshi on Thursday evening. If you arent a member, please consideroining. If you are a member, please consider becoming an active participant in the PTA. If you are both, we thank you! Astrong Garden Gate PTA helps to ensure a strong Garden Gate School. We are very much connected after all, we sharehe same children!

Traffic Problems - Very Important -Please ReadOn Tuesday, we had our usual traffic gridlock during dismissal time. Parents were double parking and some were trying to

riple park. Triple parking turns our parking lot into gridlock. Obviously, this is an unsafe situation. It is compounded by theact that some of our pedestrian traffic often ignores basic safety rules, too. Yesterday, I was standing by one of the traffic

deputies. Three sets of parents and children jaywalked across the street right in front of the deputy and me. Aside from anexpensive ticket and the boldness of breaking the law in front of a peace officer, I am most concerned about the safety of thechildren and the adults. Those laws exist for a reason. Remember, too, that when you either deliberately or obliviously breakhe law, its important to think about what you are teaching your children.

Since my arrival nine years ago, we have consistently looked for ways to help make the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times safer and more efficient. We are continuing to do that. Some of our efforts have been successful and others not.We are hampered by physical limitations in that access to our school is not easy because of the limited number of availableoutes to use. In addition, our parking lot was designed for a school with half the number of students it now has. You multiplyhose students by the number of adults, cars and other forms of transportation needed to get all of the students to Garden

Gate and, well, you get the picture.

Over the next few months, we may try to implement some procedures that are different than the ones currently in place. Wewill keep you updated and ask for your help in making the whole process more efficient and safer for all. In the meantime, ets try to remember these few things:

    1. When dropping off your child, pull your car as far forward as you can curbside.Your child should be ready to get out, when you stop the car. Please dont take the time to look for books, lunches orto say long goodbyes.

    2. Form only one line for drop-off or pick-up of students.More than one line means that students need to dart between cars. These are cars that are in the process of arrivingor leaving the parking lot. They are not parked. This will be a radical change for some of us, but it is the safest andmost efficient one if we can get everyone on board.

    3. Under no circumstances park your car curbside and leave it.If it is necessary to go on campus, then please find a proper parking place in the parking lot or park on the street andwalk onto the campus.

    4. Be patient and work with us.All of us have the same goal! I want to thank our parents who have valiantly braved traffic over the years to help all ofus, as well as our student valets who have been so responsible about doing their morning duty over the years.
