What is a Soft Starter?

• Soft starter is a solid state device used with AC electric motors to ramp up the voltage and torque on the motor during startup

• This ramp up reduces mechanical stress on the motor and shaft, as well as the electro-dynamic stresses on the attached power cables and electrical distribution network, thus extending the lifespan of the system

Page 9: General Support Customer Segments - eaton.com.brpub/@electrical/documents/... · • Soft starters lower inrush current when compared to ... • Manual or auto reset mode. 19

Why Convert to Soft Starters?

• Soft starters lower inrush current when compared to across-the-line or wye-delta starting methods

• Reduces stress on components (belts, chains, conveyors)• Reduces long term maintenance costs • Increases System uptime

• In pump applications, reduces “water hammer” effect by utilizing pump-stop feature

• Reduces heat build up in enclosure because of internal by-pass

• Reduces peak inrush current resulting in minimizing penalty from the utility companies

S611 Competitive Comparison

• Key competitors in the markets are• Benshaw• Motortronics

• It can very well go up against any other high feature competitor out there

Value Props of S611 Over Benshaw• S611 size is smaller in the 100-250HP range• In S611, the control board is mounted underneath the

cover giving it much protection versus that of Benshaw where it is mounted on the cover

• S611 has a highly intuitive digital user interface – This makes commissioning and monitoring that much simpler; Benshaw’s standard user interface is a 4 button 7 segment display

• No JAM or Stall protection in Benshaw• Operating temperature is wider with S611 • Benshaw’s standard enclosed offering is with

breakers; S611 is offered with both fuses and breakers
