ValenƟne Public School Grapevine Term 2 Week 8 2018 Our positive affirmation this week is: Connect Our affirmations is: By allowing myself to be happy, I inspire other to be happy as well.” Tuesday 19th June 2018 From the Principal’s desk…… Dear parents, carers and community, During the last week we have all been reminded about the importance of safety and Child ProtecƟon. While we noƟed our community we were also inspired to review our own pracƟses. Some informaƟon that is perƟnent to share: Recently we have held meeƟng with RMS, LMCC, Department of EducaƟon and Road Safety specialists. Yazmin Catley has also been involved. This meeƟng has resulted in an acƟon plan to ensure that our school is as safe as can be and while this does involve some physical changes to the entry and exits to the school, the majority of the plan is around improved man- agement of procedures. The rst step is to release a survey to capture the data of student and adult pedestrian and vehicle movement around the school so that we can design a new management plan to improve the or- ganisaƟon and supervision of students coming to school and leaving our grounds each day. Please look out for the survey through Skoolbag as your family's informaƟon will be vital to our plan. We have also recently been looking at what is currently a limited plan with our third party supplier 'Sentral' which, if upgraded would allow us to gen- erate instant text messages home as rolls are marked each morning. This would allow a parent to know within the rst hour of school starƟng that their child in not on site. It also allows the parent to reply with jusƟcaƟon of absence through text as well as Sentral captures the reason and stores as legally acceptable data. We will be updaƟng Sentral. Shout out to our amazing teachers who have been working very long hours in or- der to prepare each child's support based on our school-wide data collecƟons and evidence sets. I personally would like to acknowledge the workload. I know that to cope with this my husband would take my children away for the day on weekends to allow for me to spend big slabs of Ɵme on assessment and reports. Thank you teachers...your work is valued. Our Deputy Principal, Mrs Rich and I read every report and provide both wriƩen feedback to each teacher as well as a school wide evaluaƟon. We welcome any parent feedback as well on this very important pro- cess and product. Last Friday we celebrated a new program in the school, OperaƟon Pen -Pal which was an eight week pen-pal leƩer wriƟng experience between thirty of our students (Ms Duck's talented Spelling class), and thirty people who have carers. Our stu- dents did not meet their pen-pal, who was either elderly or a person with a disabil- ity unƟl the end of the program and it was such a joy to see them come together and meet each other for the rst Ɵme. Hunter Nursing and Newcastle University parƟcipants were thrilled with the success of the program and they will denitely call on us again if the program is funded next year, CongratulaƟons to Ms Duck, our amazing students and their families who supported this inspiring program and to Ms Tamara Blakemore (parent) who iniƟally connected us with Newcastle Universi- ty. Our student parliament is acƟve within the school and the latest decision they have made will have a global impact. They have voted to give ongoing support to the charity 'Cambodian Schools of Hope' with a single fundraiser each year. They aim to pay for a teacher a year ($150 a month x 10) and they have requested to set up an ongoing donaƟon box near admin to collect loose change, with their inspiraƟon to feed breakfast to students (22c buys a child breakfast twice a week). Round 1 for 2018-19 closes 30 June for families that are interested in applying. We are sure there are many sporting students who could do with $500 for shoes, sporting equipment, registrations or even paying the petrol for mum and dad. The Local Sporting Champions (LSC) program provides financial assistance for young sportsmen and women aged 12-18. If successful, applicants will receive a $500 grant that can be used towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating. Don't miss out. Hunter Region Cross Country Carnival

On Friday of week 5, our four super-fit cross country stars, Anika M, Denzel G, Lily M and Kiara M, competed at the PSSA Hunter Cross Country Carnival at Cessnock as members of the East Lake Macquarie Zone team. All students demonstrated awesome physical and mental strength and their competitive spirit was matched by their sportspersonship. Anika and Denzel performed exceptionally well with Anika finishing 2nd in the region and Denzel finishing 5th, earning them a spot in the Hunter Cross Country team! Congratulations to all students on their achievements and good luck Anika and Denzel at the State Carnival next term!

PSSA Knockout Girls’ Soccer Gala Day On Tuesday of week 6, our girls’ soccer teams participated in the PSSA State Knockout Gala Day at Speers Point. We enjoyed a fantastic day of competition at a unique venue and the girls performed skilfully, fairly and with great teamwork. The second team proved a tough challenge for their opposition, defeating Swansea 1-0 and keeping Eleebana scoreless in the second half of their last game, despite being younger and less experienced. The first team played exceptionally well scoring many well-structured goals and they defended superbly, not conceding a single goal in their first two matches. After a convincing 3-0 win over Eleebana they went on to beat Mt Hutton 11-0 in the semi-final before going down to Caves Beach 1-0 in an extremely close grand final. The determination the both teams showed on the field and the spirit they showed in victory and defeat is something they should be extremely proud of. Congratulations to all the girls involved in both teams for their sportspersonship and effort and a huge thank you goes out to the parent volunteers who helped and supported our teams on the day!

This week’s key sign…

Saturday

Intervention This week, the Learning and Support Team have been working hard to meet the needs of students requiring extra support within our school. Each week we have a mee ng to review the needs of students who are currently receiving support, as well as discuss students who have been referred by their classroom teacher.  At Valen ne Public School we have three teachers providing extra support for these students; Mrs Schmarr (K-6), Mrs King (K-2) and Miss Campbell (3-6). Students who may receive support are those who:

Are iden fied as having learning needs through formal assessment carried out by the classroom teacher, LaSexternal agency.

Are iden fied by classroom teachers in consulta on with their Assistant Principal, i.e. those having difficul es in specific lessons.

Perform in the lower  ers within our classroom data collec ons.

Are returning to school a er a long absence as a result of illness.

Have high levels of anxiety or emo onal needs.

Need assistance with assessment tasks.

Receive funding.

Interven on in Kindergarten   Students have been focusing on sight words. Many of the over 200 “sight words” do not follow the basic phonics principles, thus they cannot be “sounded out.” They are called “sight” words because the goal is for your child to recognise these words instantly, at first sight.

Why are Sight Words Important?

Sight words are very important for your child to master because, believe it or not, “sight words account for up to 75% of the words used in beginning children’s printed material. There are different sight words for every grade level.

Interven on in Stage 2  In Stage 2 students have been wri ng persuasive texts. Various students have been given addi onal support with learning to come up with

three strong arguments to persuade the reader. Students have been wri ng arguments about topics of their choice such as; why

computers are be er than workbooks and why social media use should be limited.

Valentine OSHC News This week at Valentine OSHC our new basketball and totem tennis equipment have proved popular with children enjoying games under the cola. When not raining they are having fun out on the oval practicing soccer skills, socialising with their peers and climbing the playground equipment. After a long day at school, our OSHC children are also very interested in what’s on the menu for afternoon tea. Our new option of Chicken Caesar wraps has been a big hit with children thoroughly enjoying the nutritious treat. Next week, children have requested Jatz with Tuna, carrots, cucumber and French onion dip. Craft activities are on offer daily at OSHC. Children can be observed using their creative skills to mould clay sculptures, create recyclable material collages and design their own mosaic stencils. Children have access to a wide range of resources and activities to suit their individual needs and interests. Some options include construction with Lego, magnetic blocks, Mobilo, timber blocks and marble tracks. Children can also kick back and relax with some reading, take time to complete their homework or simple engage in conversation with their friends. If you would like to book your child into our OSHC service please visit our website to book on line and register for the new lounge app at ymcansw.org.au/valentine
