step into tHe past

OnE day HikiNG TRiP Life in the Dinaric Mountains moves to the ageless rhythms of the past, and this one-day trip offers unique insights. After an hour and a half’s drive we arrive in Lukomir, Bosnia’s highest and most isolated mountain village. The traditional lifestyles of the Dinaric highlanders are still

practiced here, providing a unique window into Europe’s past. Traditional dress is still worn, and goes hand in hand with the more familiar signs of everyday life, such as electricity and running water. On the edge of the village you will be treated to a breathtaking view of Rakitnica Canyon, which drops 800m below, as well as

the neighbouring Obalj and Visočica mountains. We will introduce you to the villagers and you can learn first-hand how they live in this beautiful but difficult environment. Next we hike to the 40-metre Peruće Waterfall before returning to Gornji (upper) Lukomir for a traditional homemade lunch prepared by our hosts. At the end of the day you will also have the opportunity to see and purchase local handicrafts.

Get close to nature and soak up the majestic scenery of Sutjeska National Park, one of the natural treasures of the region. After a two-hour drive from Sarajevo, we arrive in the deep and picturesque canyon of Sutjeska River. Hiking boots are needed as we veer off to Dragos Saddle and take a peek at the Skakavac waterfall deep in Perućica’s valley. Trekking through the forest, you’ll notice it’s thick and teeming with endemic flora. From here we’ll walk to Prijevor for more incredible views. With rugged mountains fram-ing the landscape, many have compared the experience to Yosemite. At the edge of the forest we descend towards the glacier lake Trnovačko, set within a huge amphitheatre of rocky peaks. Weather permitting, we enjoy an icy cold swim (only for the very fit) followed by a tasty lunch in the midst of this awe-inspiring landscape. After lunch we head back to civilization, enjoying the soft glow of the setting sun above Zelengora and Maglić, Bosnia’s highest peak.

TWO day HikiNG TRiP

A true journey of discovery combined with great hiking on the lush green slopes of Zelengora mountain range. Enjoy exquisite views of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s rugged border and climb Maglić, the country’s highest peak.

DAY oNE: After a two-hour drive through eastern canyons and forests we enter Bosnia and Herzegovina’s oldest National Park and venture up a dirt road to the heart of the park – Zelengora. At Donje Bare we’ll park the vehicle and take a short walk leaving our packs at the mountain hut at Donje Bare. Pyramid Peak is our destination. From here the country’s highest peak towers above - Maglić at 2,386 metres. You’ll also see Volujak’s rock face barrier and the 1,200-metre deep canyon of the Sutjeska River. We’ll return via Gornje Bare to the hut to complete this magnificent five-hour hike.

DAY TWo: We offer two options - a strenuous hike up to Maglić or a leisurely walk to Trnovačko Lake. The day starts with a drive to Perućica medieval forest, a true gem in terms of wildlife and the large number of endemic plants. The park also includes Bosnia and Herzegovina’s impressive mountain Maglić, named after the thick fog that often surrounds its rocky peak. We briefly stop at Dragoš Sedlo with its colourful view of Perućica forest. The lonely waterfall Skakavac plunges 75 metres down into the dark spruce and beech forest.

Here we will split the group into those who are interested in a strenuous four-hour hike up to Maglić at 2,386 meters and those who prefer an easy two-hour hike to Trnovačko lake. At the end of the day we will all meet up again at the Trnovačko Glacier Lake, set in a huge amphitheatre of rocky peaks. After a well-deserved break we find our way back to the vehicle and return to Sarajevo, with photos and memories to treasure.

FIVE day HikiNG TRiP

This is one of the most amazing adventures Bosnia and Herzegovina has to offer. Explore ancient Perućica forest, Bosnia’s highest peak, and several high mountain lakes.

DAY oNE: We depart Sarajevo for Sutjeska National Park. After arriving in the park, we set off to the tranquil lake of Donje Bare where we walk through beech forest and mountainous terrain to the summit of Planinica (1,772m). Our next destination is Gornje Bare lake, which we reach via a slippery scree and boulder-covered slope. At the lake we break for lunch.

We’ll return via Gornje Bare to the hut to complete this fantastic five-hour hike and transfer back to the hotel in Tjentište.

DAY TWo: Transfer to Orlovačko Lake in a remote and relatively unknown area of the Zelengora mountain range. From the lake we set off for Bregoč mountain along an unmarked path over open grassland. We walk through a steep valley before coming to the foot of a rising ridge that leads us to the summit of Bregoč. After a short break we hike down to the various lakes of Zelengora. The day ends with a swim at Orlovačko and an early dinner.

DAY THREE: The drive to Perućica medieval

forest takes just over 45 minutes. The park is a true

gem in terms of the wildlife and large number of

endemic plants, and it also includes Bosnia and

Herzegovina’s highest mountain, Maglić, named

after the thick fog that often surrounds its rocky

peak. We leave our car behind at a viewpoint,

Dragoš Sedlo, with its memorable view of the

one of two remaining medieval forests in Europe

- Perućica. We see the lovely waterfall Skakavac

plunging 75metres down into the dark forest.

Next, we disappear into the magical forest of

tall spruce and beech trees. The four to five-

hour hike will be over before you know it. As the

sun sets we drive back to the hotel.

DAY FouR: Transfer to Lokva Dernečište where

we start our day’s walk through forest and

mountainous terrain. The ascent of Maglić

Mountain will take us approximately four hours

over mountain trails with steep cliffs and is by

far the most demanding part of today’s hike.

(Please note that this part of the trip is not for those

afraid of heights!) With each step we rise above

the surrounding peaks scattered around the park,

until at last we reach Maglić, Bosnia’s highest peak.

It ’s the perfect lunch spot, with its stunning views

of Montenegro and emerald-green Trnovačko

Lake. It will take us about three hours to descend

to Trnovačko, where we have ample time to enjoy

the cooling waters and awesome views. From the

lake we hike back to Prijevor for the ride back to

the hotel in Tjentište.

DAY FiVE: Transfer and return to Sarajevo.

DAY TWo: After breakfast, we trek across the northern part of Bjelašnica towards Lokvanjsko, a tiny lake perched high in the mountains. After a short break by the lake with its numerous frogs, endemic salamanders and water snakes, we set off to Vlahinja summit. After one and a half hours, we arrive at the peak with its exceptional view of the Olympic skiing resort of Babin Do. Here we enjoy a picnic lunch before hiking to Sitnik through the beautiful mountainous terrain of Bjelašnica’s interior. The hut is a lonely reminder of Bosnia’s mountain-eering past. We return to our hut to pick up our overnight gear, and then circle back around the lake while being treated to great views of Hranisava and Krvavac.

TWO day HikiNG TRiP

DAY oNE: We trek to Green Visions’ mountain hut on Bjelašnica Mountain, hiking up the opposite side of the Olympic Ski Slopes, away from the more crowded routes. The hike will take us through a pine and beech forest up to the Gate of Wind where, depending on the weather, you may be greeted by a warm breeze or a piercing south wind. From here we traverse up to a small shepherd’s hut. We’ll have lunch and enjoy the views of the southeast side of Bjelašnica.

At this point we start our one-hour

climb to the top of Hranisava. The slope is rather steep in some places but offers lovely views of central Bosnia and Herzegovina and almost all the main mountains in the Central Dinaric Alps. From the top we’ll continue hiking down to Krošnje, a traditional summer settlement for shepherds coming from as far away as Čapljina in Herzegovina. Krošnje is at the foot of Krvavac, a magnificent peak partially surrounded by pine brush. Locals say that it is the place where bears sleep over winter. After a brief rest in this wild place, we head back to our cosy mountain hut for a good night’s rest.

FOUR day HikiNG TRiP

DAY oNE: Green Visions’ mountain hut on Bjelašnica Mountain, hiking up the opposite side of the Olympic Ski Slopes. We’ll have lunch and enjoy the hills and bare peaks of the southeast side of Bjelašnica.

Starting our one-hour climb to the top of Hranisava. Offering lovely views of central Bosnia and Herzegovina and almost all the main mountains in the Central Dinaric Alps. Krošnje is at the foot of Krvavac, a magnificent peak partially surrounded by pine brush. After a brief rest in this wild place we head back to our cosy mountain hut for a good night’s rest.

We return to our hut to pick up our overnight gear, and then circle back around the lake while being treated to great views of Hranisava and Krvavac.

DAY THREE: We leave our “base camp” at Stanari hut and continue over Bjelašnica ridge to our final goal today, Umoljani village. Along the way we may meet the occasional shepherd with his sheep grazing on the steep slopes of Bjelašnica. After one and a half hours, we begin our gradual climb to Greda, a beautiful pass in between Krvavac (Bjelašnica’s second highest

peak) and Debela Brda. Here we are treated to views of Bjelašnica’s highest peaks, Treskavica, Visočica, Zelengora and Jahorina mountains. While walking through soft mountain grass we wind our way down to Grkarica spring, a true lifesaver in the warm months of summer. We continue along the valley, arriving at the beautiful summer village of Gradina and today’s final destination, Umoljani village.

DAY FouR: This hike offers it all: amazing scenery, old water mills, and stunning views of Rakitnica canyon. From the traditional Bosnian mosque in the village of Umoljani we trek to the Seven Watermills used for centuries to grind wheat into flour. We hug the ridge until Rakitnica Canyon opens up before us. After a 20-minute hike uphill we reach the cascades of Studeni Potok. Here, at certain times of the year, the stream falls 400 metres into the canyon below. Following the stream, we hit Studeno Polje (Fields) and the serpent-like formations of Studeni Potok (Stream). Here we’ll have a superb view of Obalj and the long flat valley of Studeno Polje.

From the Studeni we hike along Obalj’s side to the 40-metre Peruće Waterfall. All along, you will be treated to amazing views and cool breezes coming off of Visočica and Treskavica. We arrive in Lukomir, Bosnia’s highest and most isolated mountain village. The traditional lifestyles of the Dinaric highlanders are still practiced here.

After lunch, we return via Dugo Polje, a long field flanked by Bjelašnica and Obalj. The trail is well maintained by people from the local villages. From the village we walk down to Umoljani, zigzagging along cultivated fields, where we will be picked up and transferred back to Sarajevo.

Tara River Rafting Europe’s deepest canyon

The Tara is one of the four beautiful white water rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina offering professionally guided rafting tours. Tara River ranks among Europe’s best for class II - IV. This river will pleasantly surprise you with its stunning wilderness and unforgettable landscapes. Our skippers from Highlander are certified by the International Rafting Federation.

A jewel amongst the world’s natural heritage spots, the Tara River boasts the largest canyon in Europe. The river follows the border with Montenegro, and is 140 kilometres of natural wonder. The 1,300-metre canyon has consistently generated some of the best rafting and kayaking in Europe. This oasis and protected area is well established as a base for extreme water sports as well as easy family outings. There’s something for just about everyone.

Neretva River Rafting The green emerald of Herzegovina

The Neretva is the undoubted gem of Herzegovina, flowing over 100 kilometres from its mountainous source into the Adriatic Sea. In the upper canyon, where Green Visions partners operate, you will find some of the most exciting rafting in Europe. Expect steep canyon walls, unspoilt flora and fauna, and a wild ambience that only the Neretva can provide.

Our well-equipped team is ready to guide first timers or experienced rafters on a wonderful white water adventure. This is a trip that can be enjoyed by just about everyone. The water is very calm during late summer, and the trip provides ample opportunity to enjoy the canyon and its unique flora and fauna.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is well known for its white water rafting adventures, so it’s no surprise that the 2009 World Rafting Championships were held on two of our best rivers. We offer professionally guided rafting tours on four beautiful white water rivers. Whether you’re a novice or a pro, the crystal-clear waters of our rivers and our pristine landscapes will thrill and dazzle you.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Sarajevo, the crossroads of ancient civilizations and the centre of old ottoman life

• Kraljeva Sutjeska with its medieval royal fortress and Franciscan Monastery

• Lukomir, Bosnia’s highest mountain village

• Mostar - The oriental gem of Herzegovina

• Beautiful samples of Ottoman architecture and design in Blagaj and PoČitelj

For thousands of years, Bosnia and Herzegovina

has been the crossroads of civilisations. Nowhere

else in Europe can you find such a magical mix of

Europe and the Near East. The Slavs settled this

Balkan heartland in the 6th century and their

subsequent history has created the most multi-

ethnic society in southern Europe. Here you will

find the great mystical Byzantine traditions,

the Romanesque influence from the Franciscan

church, the small but significant traces of the

Jewish communities that settled here in the 15th

century, and unmistakable oriental trappings of

the Ottoman Empire. Bosnia and Herzegovina

is a natural wonderland, blessed with rugged

canyons, lush forests, crystal-clear rivers and

lakes, with a precious mélange of the cultures

and traditions that have evolved from this

mountainous region of the Southern Dinaric

Alps. It is a place that will stun you with its natural

beauty, inspire you with its cultural richness, and

touch you with its warm and genuine hospitality.

At Green Visions, we’re passionate about the

wonders of our homeland and look forward to

sharing them with you.

Sarajevo is steeped in history, yet open and welcoming to the visitor. It has bounced back from the conflict of the early 1990s, which became infamous as the longest siege in modern European history. The people of Sarajevo are resilient, and you’ll quickly see that the Sarajevo of today has shed the ghosts of its recent past.

Our team of multi-lingual guides will share the tales and history of this fascinating city. You’ll encounter a rich tapestry of Ottoman and Habsburg influences, and see the spot where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, sparking the First World War. But Sarajevo will also charm you with its teeming café culture and friendly hospitality. Let us take you there.

Our unique 2.5 hour walking tour will guide you through the old town, its tiny side streets and the cultural hub in the city centre. Heritage

Founded in the 15th century, Mostar is the jewel of the Balkans. The architecture is a brilliant combination of Turkish ingenuity with local traditions of craftsmanship. Undoubtedly, you will have heard much about this city, which was tragically divided during the conflict in the early 1990s. You can still see the scars of war, but these days Mostar is once again a warm and bustling place with a fascinating history to be encountered around every corner. We will spend the late morning and early afternoon exploring its unique sights. After lunch we take a 15-minute drive to the nearby village of Blagaj, home of the Buna Spring and the adjacent Ottoman house/monastery. The spring here is amazing – it flows out of a 200m cliff wall, and is the source of the Buna River. The Ottoman sultan was impressed, and ordered a Tekija to be built right next to it. This 16th century house/monastery was built for the Dervish cults and is still one of the most mystical places in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Blagaj’s Old Town, the newly built heritage trail provides a pleasant 30-45 minute walk around the town. Sights include the Tekija house and the 17th century Velagić house, a beautiful example of Ottoman masonry. In the vicinity you will also come across old watermills that were formerly driven by the fast-flowing Buna River.

Green Visions organises educational outdoor adventure activit ies for children and young people. With youth unemployment at an all-time high in Bosnia and Herzegovina, more and more young people are leaving for countries with higher living standards. Our vision is to increase the opportunities that responsible tourism offers to young people and their families.

Together with the GTZ, we started the Open Travel Network to provide a sound base for youth tourism development. It addresses the issues of unemployment, lack of training , cer t if ication and standards, inadequate marketing , and limited access to international

Green Visions is a local partner of World Hotel Link (www.whl.travel), a global network of travel websites catering to independent travellers. Whl.travel aims to bring small and medium-sized accommodation and tour providers into the e-marketplace.

As a local partner for whl.travel, we cater for travellers who are looking for an often-missing personal touch in online services, not to mention supporting family-owned and operated B&Bs and home stays that offer great benefits to local communities. The goal is to provide travellers with access to smaller accommodations and tour

operators, where they can really make a difference. As a result, Green Visions is now able to offer you online hotel/accommodation and tour/activity booking, making it even easier for you to book and pay for your holiday online.

In addition to giving family-run B&Bs and hotels the chance to market their product to a wider public, we also assist local communities who want to develop their own home stay and B&B programmes. As we develop these further, you will find more of these local village accommodations available through our website: www.sarajevo-travel.ba

OUR TRIP CaTEGORIES

GREEN WALkS

A green walk is an easy walk. If you like to wander around in nature without exhausting yourself, green walks are just the thing for you. No long strenuous climbs, nor steep descents. We will bring you to areas that are easily accessible, safe, fun and beautiful. Each green walk takes you about 2 hours of walking in each direction. No special equipment is needed other than a pair of sturdy walk-ing shoes and a day-pack.

GREEN HikES

Green hikes are trips in-volving a range of terrain. Those participating need to be in good health and enjoy walking four to six hours a day. It is not rare that you climb 1,000 meters through difficult terrain under Bosnia’s blistering summer and autumn sun. Our hikes are demanding, but in return you will see a part of Bosnia few have seen. If you love hiking, sleeping outdoors, exploring new areas and meeting people who share your excitement about nat-ure, then we recommend you join us on a green hike.
