As children are not al- lowed into the wards, she was sitting on a chair at the entrance as the family visit- ed and prayed with their elderly relative. At the end of the visiting hour, the family left the ward and the little girl was no lon- ger on the chair. They spread out to look for her. The mother went to the security guards at the gate to query if they had seen the child. As she came back to the building, a security guard said that he had seen the child standing in a passage with a man who was wearing a striped tee shirt. As the search spread throughout the hospital, the security guards found the child who was still being molested by a man wearing a striped tee shirt. Greytown Police were called and ar- rested the man. KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Dr Sibo- ngiseni Dhlomo, together with the head of department, Dr Sibongile Zungu issued a joint statement as follows: “We are shocked and disgusted by this despicable act, perpetrated against a de- fenceless child. It is immoral, barbaric and unacceptable and is yet another ex- ample of how children's rights are still be- ing violated by those who are supposed to care and protect them. We thank the security guards who came to this child's rescue. We wish to appeal to the law au- thorities to ensure that the perpetrator behind this dastardly act is made to face the full might of the law.” Speaking in his capacity as the provin- cial chairperson of the Men’s Forum, Dhlomo said: ‘Men in Greytown should come out in large numbers when the sus- pect appears in court to support the victim and declare that this horrific act is not done in their name. It is a shame that this incident comes as South Africa is engaged in various anti-abuse activities as part of 16 Days of No Violence Against Women.” On Wednesday last week, 29 year old Sibongisene Mchunu of Muden appeared in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape. The case was remanded to 12 December and Mchunu was re- tained in custody. Four year old raped at Greytown Hospital ELEVEN years ago, the Grey- town Gazette reported on this amazingly talented artist, Lobolile Ximba, a mother of ten living in deep rural Muden, who had just been awarded a presti- gious top national craft award. Since then, she has been award- ed many more times and in ad- dition, has been flown to Ameri- ca three times to exhibit. It is an incredible story. Now 61, Lobolile, who never went to school, was taught beadwork by her mother. She worked on a farm, married and then with her neighbours start- ed to do the traditional bead- work. Since that first award eleven years ago, which included her first flight ever and a stay at a five star Cape Town hotel, Lobo- lile has calmly taken it all in her stride and continues to special- ise in her magnificent bead- work dolls. Her stays in top hotels and in- ternational flights have not changed her focus and she still happily lives in the Pholani area in Muden and spends her days doing her exciting beadwork. In 2006 and 2008, she was invit- ed to exhibit her work at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market and in 2010, she went to Washington to display her work at the World Art Festival. These incredible experiences have expanded her talents and Lobile is now looking to grow her business - she has request- ed government funding to help her do so. A long standing member of Club Siyazama, which pro- motes an awareness of HIV and Aids in rural communities, Lobolile's first national award was for a beaded cruxifix doll to reflect on “women who are crucified to Aids.” The awards keep rolling in for this special lady - on 24 October she won the 2014 title as the “best woman in indigenous art” at the Imbokodo award cere- mony in Gauteng. So much talent MANY people will be celebrating the fes- tive season with lots and lots to eat, new clothes, gifts etc. But spare a thought or two for at least 25 gogos in the Muden area who are caring for little ones who have been orphaned or abandoned. In some instances, these won- derful caring ladies are looking after youngsters who are not even family. Unemployment is a way of life in the Muden area, together with a high rate of HIV/Aids. Poverty stares one in the face. This dire situation is compounded by the fact that a number of the children do not have birth certificates so the gogos cannot obtain child grants - they are trying to feed, clothe and educate on an old age pension. There is only a mobile clinic once a month in the area - a clinic building stands there but has not yet been finished. Adding to the toughness of daily living, the area is very dry with limited water sup- plies. To those out there who feel that the true spirit of Christmas is no longer apparent, here is a wonderful opportunity to cele- brate it as it should be. If you have any clothes for the youngsters and the gogos please drop them off at the Greytown Gazette. Dry foods (mealie meal, rice, tins etc.) would also be appreciated. All donations will be handed over to these families. Spare a thought for the gogos of Muden

Councillor Buss is walk-ing the extra mile for all the people ofGreytown, and the larger Umvoti Mu-nicipality, and we need to thank himfor what he is single handedly doingto our benefit.

SIR,If I shop in Pietermaritzburg on Tues-

days, I getpensionerdiscounts fromacer-tain chain, Wednesdays is another storepensioner discount day, Thursday is an-other store. Many of the stores offer apoints system for shopping with them.

These canbe “cashed in” ona later pur-chase, giving you an effective discount.

What do Greytown businesses offer thepensioner? Nothing as far as I know!

Many businesses in town complain theydo not get support from Greytonians.

Perhaps no pensioner days or pointssystems is one of the reasons?

Come on Greytown stores - let us knowwhat you offer the “oldies”.

Why no pensionerdiscounts?

WHEN one hears the word mari-gold, it's virtually impossible not to

with grief, jealousy and cruelty intheir native land, Mexico.Still used today in aDay of theDeadceremonies, it is the Virgin Marythat inspired the name, meaningMary’s Gold.

It's not all doom and gloomthough. Luckily this gorgeousbloomhasbeenadoptedaroundtheworld and many other symbolismsbestowed.

The ancient Welsh used them topredictweather, knowing thatopenmarigoldswouldbringgoodweath-er. Itwas also believed that keepinga pot of marigolds in a householdwith a tempestuous relationshipwould create a peaceful environ-ment.Marigoldswereevenwornbywitches to stop people gossipingabout them or negativity comingtheir way.

There is a legend that MotherMary usedmarigolds asmoney andso theearlyChristiansputmarigold

blooms at her feet instead of coinsas an offering.

With so much meaning and sym-bolism, the marigold does not dis-appoint on the usefulness scale ei-ther. They naturally deter pests soplanting them in the veggie patchis amust; the colour from their pet-als is used as food and textile dye;and their essential oils are used asan antifungal treatment.

Withall thiswarmth incolour, re-member that they also love to beplanted in full sun and this hardylittle annual is a favourite formanyreasons, but being water wise is atthe top of that list so don't over wa-ter them. They also don't like verynutritious soil so don't over fertiliseoryou’ll endupwith loadsof foliageand not many flowers.

A CHRISTMAS party was held for the chil-dren at the drop in centre at the UmvotiAids Centre last Thursday.

Father Christmas handed out gifts to thechildren, thanks to the generosity of a fewlocal ladies who bought gifts, and somewere provided by Toy Story.

Thechildrenreceivedpartypacks, lovelyChristmas cupcakes and beautifully deco-rated Christmas crackers made by Her-mannsburg junior school children.

Thanks to Laverne Pieterse for the cup-

The children attend the drop in centreat the Umvoti Aids Centre where they aregiven a cooked meal, homework supervi-sion and a safe place to play, after school.

This is a very much appreciated andworthwhile facility for these children who, inmany instances, wouldgowithoutagoodmeal and care.
