It is presumed that Umvoti Mu- nicipality will be present at these meetings - it would be in- teresting to hear why although having been notified of the problem regularly over the past six months, Umvoti did not en- sure that the municpality’s wa- ter service provider, that is Um- zinyathi, took action. At this critical stage, it is up to every single water user to override why the officials have been so slack in this matter, but rather to make sure they do their share by exercising strin- gent control over the daily con- sumption of water through a 50% reduction. THEMunicipalDemarcationBoard isin the process of redetermining theboundaries of certain municipalitiesin terms of a request from the Minis-ter of Co-operative Governance andTraditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan.

It hasbeenrecommended thatUm-voti's Ward 5 (Kranskop) and Ward6 (Gcoti) be moved to MaphumuloMunicipality to align with traditionalboundaries..

Ward 4 Mpofana (Mooi River) andWard 12 Msinga to be moved to Um-voti Municipality.

Wards1,2,3ofMpofanatobeamal-gated with Umngeni and a portion ofWard 2 into Impendle. The effectwould be the total disestablishmentof the Mpofana local Municipality

The aim of the re-determination ofmunicipal boundaries is to makethem more functional and viable.

It is stated that these proposedchangesarenotpoliticallymotivated.

Apublic hearingwas scheduled forJanuary/February but has beenpost-poned.

LASTyear,ER24receivedmorethan33000hoax calls, rangingfrom reports of non-existentaccidents to people being in“distress” in remote areas.

And shockingly, adults con-tributed significantly to thenumber of these received bycontact centre agents.

ER24 has issued an appeal tothe public not to make suchprank calls, pointing out thatthese could impact on some-one's life in that real emergen-

cies could occur whilst the par-amedics have been sent on awild goose chase.

Shakira Cassim, ER24 con-tact centre manager, urgedhoax callers to think about theconsequences of their actions.

“The risk is sohigh. Someonehaving a bit of fun can impacton another person's life. Thereare instances, especially overpeak periods, where our vehi-cles areall over attending to re-al emergencies, suchasdrown-

ing incidents and collisionswith multiple patients. Attend-ing toahoaxcallmeans thatwehave a vehicle unavailable toattend to someone really inneed,” she said.

Consider yourself or a lovedonenot receivingurgent assist-ance ina life-threatening situa-tion before making a hoax call.Parents are also advised toteach children about the dan-ger of making such calls.

THE South African NationalBlood Service (SANBS) showed asignificant increase in the bloodstock over the festive season.“Donors showed their supportduring this traditionally difficulttime for SANBS. We managed toget through this period withoutgoing into a shortage and for thiswe say a big thank you to all whogavesounselfishly,” saidVanessa

Raju, communications manager,SANBS.However, there has been a mas-sive decline in donations thismonth, which has resulted in thedays cover dropping to 1.6 days. This is significantly lower thanthe five days blood stock that isneededtomeet thedemand in thecountry. Now that 2015 is well underway,

we would like to remind donorsto adopt blood donation as theone action to take this new year. This year’s campaign is “YourBlood Saves Lives”. 4. Use a plugged sink to rinsevegetables instead of a running tap.

5. Use the water you used to rinse fruitand veggies to water plants.

6. Keep a bottle of tapwater in the fridgeto avoid running the tap until the water iscold.

7. Don't use running water to defrostfood.

SIR,Through the medium of your newspaper,I wish to highlight to the residents ofGreytownthediresituationconcerningourwater resources. The rate at whichwe are consumingwaterat the moment, we have about six to eightweeksofwater inMerthelyLakeasof today(Sunday).Yes, you read that correctly - six to eightweeks. We all have to put our shoulders to thewheel and seriously conserve every dropof water.Unfortunately, this situation has been al-lowed to reach crisis point due to the com-plete lack of interest shown by uMzinyathiDistrict Municipality and the Department

of Water Affairs. This matter has been tabled at the localmunicipality on numerous occasion byCouncillor P Buss, emails have been senttouMzinyathiwhocouldn’t evenbebother-ed to answer and Water Affairs seem tohave adopted the “yawn” approach.Only now (Sunday) do we suddenly havepanic stations. There is a meeting in the Town Hall onWednesday, 28 February at 4pm and ameeting in Enhlalekahle at New Hall onThursday, 29 February at 4pm.Will all residents please attend thesemeet-ings.

We are in serious trouble!

Brian Walker.

Water crisis meetings

SIR,The Greytown Hospital project that

was started some two years ago hascome to a standstill and one lane of PineStreet has been blocked off for that peri-od.

Umvoti Municipality consented to theclosure and should ask the contractor tomove his building materials so that thecitizens of Greytown can have the laneback.

SIR,Shouldapersondoasurveyonthegener-

al attitude towards our water catastropheand ask how individual families are re-stricting their use of our very limited andrapidly diminishing resources, the mostcommon answer would be “why should Ibe the only one doing it”.

Sadly, Van Riebeck is no longer in a posi-tion to remedyhis shocking long termplan-ning, so unfortunately the responsibility ofdealingwithhis carelessblunderhas to fallon the shoulders of those whose salaries

arepaidbypresent taxandratepayers, andupon whomwe have to rely for the guardi-anshipofourresourcesandinfrastructure.We have to pray that they shoulder the re-sponsibility quite soon, cease with the pos-turing and empty statement making andput administrative measures in place be-fore the war for water breaks out.

Until punitive measures are put in placefor reckless and excess water use, it willcontinue unabated.

THERE isagoodchance that loadsheddingis coming our way again.

That, alongwith the cost of having an er-ratic supply of electricity, makes these 35energy saving tips from the Department ofCommunications well worth having a lookat:TIP 1Reduce the temperature of your geyser toaround 55 degrees Celsius so you don'tneed to add toomuch cold water when youshower or do the dishes.TIP 2Remember to keep the lid on the pot whenyou cook to conserve heat and energy. The size of the pot should match the sizeof the stove plate; this can save you up to25% on the electricity you use while cook-ing.TIP 3Close the windows and doors when the airconditionerorheater isonandsavemoney.TIP 4Close the door every time you take thingsout of the fridge and also check that it sealsproperly.TIP 5Soak beans, samp and other related dryfood over night. This will save time, moneyand several hours of cooking.Tip 6It will save energy and water to shower in-stead of bath.TIP 7Insulate your geyser bywrapping newspa-pers,oldblanketsorother insulatingmate-rials around it and the hot water pipes.TIP 8Switchoff lights, fans, computersandotherenergy -consuming appliances when youleave the room. It will save you money.TIP 9Always try to use appropriate cookingutensils when cooking; for example, usepots and pans with a flat bottom, as theseconsume up to 50% less energy. Note thatanelectric stoveconsumesa lot of electrici-ty so use the plates and oven as little aspossible.TIP 10Use the right energy for the right purposes;for example, use heaters for space heatingrather thanhotplates, anduseanelectricalkettle for water heating rather than an or-dinary pot on the stove. You will use about50% less electricity.Note: Electricity is good for electronic devi-cesbut gas ismoreefficient forheatingandcooking.TIP 11Enjoy a comfortable indoor climate bothsummer and winter by ventilating yourroom properly on a daily basis. Rememberto switch off your heater, fan or air condi-tioner while ventilating the room.TIP 12Reduce your electricity account by skip-ping the washing machine's pre-wash cy-cle if your clothesarenot particularly dirty. This will use up to 20% less electricity.TIP 13Savewater and electricity bywashing yourbed linen at 60 degrees Celsius instead of90 degrees; it will still be clean!TIP 14Reduce the temperature on the heaterfrom full heat to a comfortable level.TIP 15Turn off all stand-bymodes every time you

leave the house and before going to bed.TIP 16Use energy-saving light bulbs. They lastmuch longeranduse less electricity, savingyou money in the long run.TIP 17Reduce your electricity bill by doing allyour ironing at the same time.TIP 18Check you electricity or gas meter at regu-lar intervals and take a keen interest inyour energy consumption level.TIP 19Share your energy consumption informa-tion with your neighbours; discuss yourelectricity.Tip 20Ifyouare inthemarket foranewdishwash-er or clothes washer, consider buying anefficient, water-saving energy star modelto reduce hot water use.Tip 21Buy a new energy-efficient water heater. While itmaycostmore initially thana stan-dard water heater, the energy savings willcontinue during the lifetime of the appli-ance.Tip 22Boil the required volume of water. It is en-ergy wasting to fill the kettle, just to pre-pare only one cup of tea.Tip 23Use the kettle to boil water. It is energywasting to use the stove to boil water com-pared to a kettle.Tip 24It is recommended that you open windowsfor ventilation than to use air conditioner.Tip 25No matter the energy consumption of theappliance, always switch off all appliancesif not in use.Tip 26Just after cooking and switching off thestove, use the hot stove to either warm thewater or cook eggs, but not limited to thementioned.Tip 27In areas where there is evening coldbreeze, it is recommended that the win-dows remain closed to preserve the libera-tion of heat.Tip 28During winter season, it's wise to dress inwarm clothes therefore avoiding the use ofheaters.Tip 29Use the energy saving bulbs at all times.Tip 30It is advisable to use one bulb per room.Tip 31Install aprogrammable thermostat tokeepyourhousecomfortablywarminthewinterand comfortably cool in the summer.Tip 32Just air dry dishes, instead of using yourdishwasher's drying cycle.Tip 33Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.Tip34Drive sensibly. Aggressive driving (speed-ing, rapid acceleration and braking) wast-es gasoline.Tip 35Use higher density insulation on exteriorwalls, such as rigid foam boards, in cathe-dral ceilings and on exterior walls

Merthley “K” attracts out-of towners

IN what must have been the hot-test day on the golf course for thenew millennium, a few golferstook on the course...and the heat.Man oh man but it was hot.Surprisingly, the greens were notas fast as one would have expect-ed.The littlebreezeeverynowandthen helped to ease the heat andthe half time rolls went down wellwith a brown beverage or two.

Pietermaritzburg memberswere in themajority as one or twoof the locals had to enrol children, now students, into university. Oth-er members were travellingabroad and some did not want toface the heat.Carl Groenewald was a pleasantsurprise and the trouble of Man-sers were also seen on the course, not forgetting the “Westbroek”mayor, with his usual chirps andchirps...and more chirps.

We welcome Pastor Rene Rischas a new member to the club andmembers, now we have a man toassist in all our spiritual needs aswell as help in the correct wayfrom green to green.
