Arnold Eckersley, the group’s communi- cations and marketing manager, states total stock volumes within Cape Town are at “normal levels” for this time of the year. “The fruit season is currently under way in the Western Cape and as a result there is an increase in the demand for refrigerated containers,” he adds. Fulfilling demand “Given that a significant amount of the re- frigerated cargo originates from the West- ern Cape region, it makes sense to have suffi- cient stock available as close as geographi- cally possible. Maintaining stock levels ensures that we are able to fulfil the demand for containers in southern Africa. What this means is that these containers rarely stand for a signifi- cant period of time in the depots before they are utilised,” says Eckersley. Finger on the pulse Although there are many container sites in Cape Town, Van der Merwe assures that the City has its finger on the pulse and that no proposal to open a new site will be taken lightly. “We carefully look at the desirability of the proposal, its degree of acceptability on a subject land unit, compliance with rele- vant adopted structure plans/spatial frame- works, policies and guidelines, and finally, its effect on existing rights, which excludes any alleged right to protection against trade competition. As a side note, the sheer size of Maersk’s operations is staggering. They employ 7 000 seafarers and 25 000 land based employees and operate more than 550 container vessels. Shipping and transport refrigerated container sites around Cape Town, such as this one near Killarney racetrack, lead some to erroneously believe that the numbers of containers are proliferating under no supervision from the City of Cape Town. Suggestions have been made that thestorage of cargo containers in CapeTown have reached unprecedented

Residents angered at dune debacle

Inaction by authorities regarding people living illegally on erf 1117 in the Blouberg dunes has driven hundreds of residents who live in the area tosign a petition for the City of Cape Town to address the growing problem. PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

“We no longer accept excuses andwe no longer accept being igno-red.”

This excerpt from a petition to remove andsecure the site known as Erf 1117, states justhowseriousmore than2 000TableViewresi-dents are.

Erf 1117, located in the Blouberg Dunes, ishome to many vagrants and informal set-tlers.

Partly due to ease of access, many now callsettlements such as Happy Valley and Tok-kietown home.TygerBurger last year reported on the hu-

manitarian crisis that is forced onto peoplewho have to live without basic human rightssuch as water and sanitation.

Now members of the Table View Ratepay-ers’ Association, Table View and Parklandsneighbourhood watches, street committees, the Crime and Safety Facebook page and theWestern Cape Action Forum are signing apetition to get the City of Cape Town to sortout Erf 1117 once and for all.

Muddy watersThe waters are muddy, however, since the

land belongs to the National Department ofPublic Works, and not to the City.

However, this does not deter the petitio-ners.

One of the leading forces behind the petiti-on, Table View Ratepayers’ Association’sBarrie Jarrett, warns if the petition is notheeded then it could result in an official pro-test march.

“The City will claim that anyone could ha-ve voted from outside of Table View or SouthAfrica for that matter, they will no doubt sayit’s only one voice, and perhaps even say it’sonly 2 000 voices out of 70 000,” says Jarrett.

He adds that, if anything, the petition willhave create awareness of the issue, bring thecommunity together and remind the Demo-cratic Alliance that residents are not happy.

“My drive is to actually help all residents, the families who live on Erf 1117 in squalor, and the homes surrounding the land, becau-

se the crime associated with the land, as wellas the safety aspect and hazardous issues isout of control.”

Many residents put their name on the peti-tion for selfish reasons, which is understan-dable in its own right, but the living conditi-ons for some who have been living on theland for almost two years, demand rectifica-tion.

The City defers the situation to the Depart-ment of Public Works, while the latter isunaware of the humanitarian plight on theland.

The police defer the situation to law enfor-cement, while the latter is only mandated toenforce the City’s by-laws.

Humanitarian concerns“I basically want the City to take responsi-

bility of cleaning and securing the land be-cause it does have a humanitarian impact onboth the people living on the land as well asaround the land. Not to mention the securityaspect,” concludes Jarrett.

Those who sign the petition agree to thefollowing statement: “We no longer accept

the excuse that this property belongs to theDepartment of Public Works and is thereforeoutside of the City’s jurisdiction. As the ru-ling party, elected by the majority, to leadour province and city you are ‘accountableto your electorate and have a duty to instiland maintain public trust in democratic in-stitutions’. For that reason, we are holdingyou accountable for a piece of land that fallswithin your city and province that is havinga detrimental impact on your electorate.”

Those who want to sign the petition cango to http://tinyurl.com/njhctw2.

The first Table View community police fo-rum (CPF) clean-up of the year was appar-ently a great hit on Saturday.

Those who showed their support each re-ceived a T-shirt with a CPF logo, which wassponsored by Sally Gregan of TechnicalModels.

The day was, of course, much more mean-ingful than just getting a T-shirt.

“A great sense of community was creat-ed,” says CPF spokesperson Gemma Redel-inghuys. “The more people we reach, themore residents and visitors will understandthe ‘broken window theory’.”

Graffiti and rubbish contribute to a gener-al lack of respect for the area.

“Bad elements” in society are then morelikely to add to these.

Just one broken window can eventuallysnowball into a much wider problem for thecommunity, she believes.

Volunteers met at Parklands police at07:30 on Saturday, and according to Redel-inghuys approximately 54 people participat-ed in the clean-up.

“Lennie Meyer from Lennies Trailer Hire,

once again also came to the party, and madea trailer available for the day. Kevin OralAlp, of JKL Logistics, also made his big tip-per and one ton truck available for the day. With the help of these vehicles, we were ableto shuttle all collected rubbish to theparkinglot at Parklands Spar and at 12:00 the Cityof Cape Town’s solid waste truck arrived andstarted to remove all the rubbish. There was

enough for two trips,” says Redelinghuys. She concluded by saying that the CPF

thanks all the volunteers, and those who do-nated to the CPF community clean up initia-tive, for their time and effort in making a dif-ference in the community.

The next planned Table View communityclean-up will be held on Saturday 21 Februa-ry.

Clean up a success for CPF

Some of the volunteers who cleaned the neighbourhood on Saturday showed how a communitycan work together to make a difference.

Oneburglar is suspected of being solelyresponsible for a 600% increase inhousebreakings in Melkbosstrand

and surrounds during December. The lone burglar apparently laid low for

a few weeks but has become active again. The news by Melkbosstrand police sta-

tion commander Captain Ronita van derToorn might spur more people to join theeffective Melkbos Neighbourhood Watch.“It is alleged the suspect is operating

alone, stealing laptops, money, cell phones, cameras and small objects,” elaborates Vander Toorn, before adding that concrete evi-dence found at various scenes point to it be-

ing the same person. She continues by saying that one of the

complainants has seen the suspect.“The majority of these housebreakings

occurred during early hours of themorningbetween 23:00 and 05:00. Entrance is gainedby forcingwindowsanddoors open,” she ex-plains.Negligence by the public also aids the sus-

pect in his unlawful behaviour, becausemany people leave windows or doors openduring the night.Van der Toorn says it is unknown wheth-

er the suspect is armed, but she can revealthat he is extremely resourceful.Their investigations are continuing in

full force.“One must remember that 600% sounds

a lot, but during the previous December wehad very few incidents. It is nonethelessstill concerning for us, so in the meantimewe once again ask the people to join theneighbourhood watch.”Members of the community should report

any suspicious person roaming the streetsand should never ignore dogs barking.“Melkbosstrand police and the watch are

in the process of establishing street commit-tees, which will each have a street captainto coordinate all information relating tocrime.“Together we can all help to keep Melk-

bosstrand safe to reside and visit,” con-cludes Van der Toorn.V Report suspicious activities to Melkbosstrand po-lice on 021 553 8200.

Two figures walk on the Table Viewbeach while the morning sun gentlywarms their backs.

Way beyond the breakers, faded outlinesof ships disappear and reappear in the whitemist. Table Mountain rises from the mist, creating the impression that it is floatingabove the City Bowl.

The waves wash over their weary feet un-til they are at peace.

Yoga master Laurence Milner (53) looks atthe TygerBurger journalist and affirms peo-ple are stressed out and in need of some re-lease.

We stop and look back along the beach

from where we came. Hundreds of people arepreparing themselves for the annual FreeYoga on the Beach, an initiative of the Chait-anya School of Yoga.

The journalist notices his and Laurence’swinding footprints have been washed awayby the persistent waves.

“Yoga is not about perfection. It is notabout putting your right foot around yourleft ear. It is about doing what you can, inyour time, in your space,” says Laurence.

“Yoga doesn’t work from without, it worksfrom within. It isn’t about touching yourtoes, it is about what you learn on your waydown,” he continues serenely.

Laurence has learnt a lot in the ten yearshe’s been a yoga student. When he was firstintroduced he was suffering from addiction,

but he has since discovered a new way of liv-ing.

His first impression of yoga reflects theperceptions of many.

“A lot of people think it is very soft, weakand gentle, and primarily for older people. This perception is changing in a big way. Most people leave their first introduction toyoga with the thought that they should havestarted years ago.”

Laurence looks at the powerful dynamicof the breaking waves and adds: “Yoga canbe very strong and physical.”

As we walk back to the large gathering ofcentred individuals and those who long tofind themselves, Laurence declares that thisis the fourth year the school of yoga has host-ed the free 75 minute session on the beach.

Every year the turnout is bigger, and to-day (Saturday), about 260 people became onewith themselves and with nature.

“Being around moving water is veryhealthy for your body, and the soft, sandysurface works the muscles, ligaments andjoints on a slightly deeper level. Ultimately, what better way to do yoga than to come to-gether on a beautiful morning, listen to theocean and practice it in absolute nature?”

After the two part company, the journalistwalks past the keen students and noticessomething each one has in common.

They have all come to a complete stand-still.

Behind them the buildings tower, the traf-fic races, and the mad rush of the world en-dures.

borg deur ’n speelgoedvervaardiger in Do-ha, Mohamed Almalki.

“Hulle is almal so drie, vier jaar oud.

The first day of school bordered on chaos atSinenjongo Secondary School when over 200unregistered pupils wanted to be admitted.Recognised community leaders set up a

crisis committee and turned to local wardcouncillor Joy McCarthy for help.“Some of the pupils were from outside the

province, others from Dunoon and elsewhe-re, and some from Marconi Beam PrimarySchool who had not registered for 2015. Theparents were irate when their childrencould not be admitted,” says McCarthy.“I immediately contacted the MEC for

Education, Debbie Schafer, and met with a

representative groupof parents andcommit-tee on Thursday afternoon to find a way for-ward. The proposed solutions were fowar-ded to the school principal and the depart-ment.”Thanks to the efforts of the provincial mi-

nister and officials from the department, all

the Grade 8 learners from within the com-munity have been placed at SinenjongoHigh, and pupils of other grades and areaswill be placed at surrounding schoolswithinthe next week.“The attempts to preferentially register at

Sinenjongo High can only be construed as acompliment to the principal and her staff, who have brought thematric pass rate at theschool up from 27% to over 80% over justa few years,” concludes McCarthy.

(street people) on the streets ofBourton-on-the-Water, London,England. May I suggest whatthe local police put into action:They took these people off thestreets, gave each one a dog tocare for, and they had to keepthe dog healthy, as ordered bythe Station Constable. The street people were

required to report to thespecific police station on aregular two week basis.Should the dog appear

healthy, and the street personis “drug free” they will beassisted ( by vouchers) to stayat an official shelter withmeals, and receive coupons tobuy nutritious food for the dogfrom a volunteering pet shop .This gives the street people a

new purpose in life, not justfending for themselves fromdrugs and trash, but caring for“man’s best friend”.This is what I call “Humani-

ty” or in Xhosa “Ubuntu”.

With Wonderbag, a revolutionary, non-elec-tric, heat retention cooker, you can continueto cook food for up to 12 hours after it hasbeen brought to the boil.Wonderbag was founded in South Africa

six years ago by local entrepreneur and soci-al activist, Sarah Collins. The product wasbornout of apractical desire to continue coo-king during a bout of Eskom load shedding.Sarah remembered how her grandmotherwould wrap her pots in pillows and blanketsto let the food simmer and cookuntil comple-tion. This birthed the idea to create a soluti-on thatwould allowpeoplewithinurbanandrural environments to cook while drastical-ly minimising their energy needs.Cooking with a Wonderbag uses only a

fraction of the energy normally required toprepare ameal. Thismethod of slow cookingbenefits the environment and your pocket.

One can even prepare a meal before leavingthe house for a few hours, and then returnto a meal that is ready to serve. Also available is the mini Wonderbag

which acts as a convenient and safe warmeror cooler for your child’s lunches to ensurethey will not spoil in the summer heat or betoo cold in the winter.Bags retail between R200 and R400 each

What started out as a funmusical pro-ject has become a fairly successfulendeavour for themembers ofNort-

hern Suburbs band Borderline. The band was originally started by guita-

ristsMichael Godfrey andWyatt Peters lastyear.

Michael had approached Wyatt to teachhim to play the blues.

“And then he got the idea to start a bandand just play once at Eastwoods, perhaps,”Wyatt explains.

As they went on,Wyatt found a bass play-er,AndrévanderMerwe, and the three star-ted rehearsing their songs. They had to playa showcase for the owner ofEastwoods befo-re theywould be allowed to book a gig there.

As luckwould have it, a cajon player, LenMiskin, happened to be at Eastwoods thatday. Luckier still, he happened to have hiscajon in the car, so the three invited him tojam with them. Their first gig was schedu-led for the very next day and Len becamea permanent member.

The first gig became a second and so onand the rest, as they say, is history.

Eclectic styleEastwoods’management suggested that a

female vocalist may be more suitable fortheir audiences and so they decided to findone. They started off with another singer, but she wasn’t around long. Eventually therole went to Dominique Peters.

At that stage the band were called TheBlues Collectors, a moniker they decided tochange to avoid being pigeon-holed.

They were playing around with ideaswhen “Borderline” came out, a name farmore suited to their eclectic style.

“Our eventual aim is to do a whole lot oforiginal numbers,” explains Len. Whilethey are playing some original music now, their set also contains covers, but as Lenpoints, out, they put their own interpretati-ons on well known songs.

“We’ll sometimes turn a Bob Dylan song

into a reggae song,” Len says.Wyatt, who sang for the successfulD7 aca-

pella group before, usually comes up withthe framework of their original songs befo-re taking it to the band to work on.

“We approach originals by playing toeach other’s strengths,” he says. Ultimate-ly, Wyatt describes Borderline’s music as“loose and colourful”.

Thinking back to their first gig, Wyattsays he didn’t expect them to be togetherthis long. Itwas at a showatPlaasteater thatsomeone told him their sound was “fresh”which is why he thinks they are doing sowell. “It seems like there’s something newabout it,” he says.

DisciplineTheyhave built up a reasonable following

of fans who keep coming to shows. “We ma-naged to get people behind us who want tosee us,” Len says.

Another contributing factor to the band’smomentum is their discipline when it co-mes tomaking sure they rehearse andworktogether regularly.

“One of the main reasons why there isthis sort of magic feel, I think, is becauseWyatt and I are musically well connected,”Len says. This leads to interesting improvi-sations on stage andmeans that no two per-formances sound the same.

“Sometimes those things just happenspontaneously on stage,” Wyatt adds.

For now, the band’s main goal is playingasmany shows as possible, not just in clubs, but also at festivals and private events. They are also interested in getting sponsorson board and making merchandise availa-ble for purchase at their shows.

Readers will get a chance to see the bandperform some of their originals and coverswhen they play at Stones in Durbanville onFriday 6 February. They’ll also be at theRoot 44 Market on Sunday 1 March and atThe Thirsty Scarecrow (across the roadfrom the market) later that day.V Visit www.borderline-live.com or find Borderlineon Facebook for more information about the band, upcoming shows and bookings.

SAREL BURGER

Daar isnet nie ’n swakplek in symondering nie.
