Broken glass, a bloodied cloth, a headwound and a trembling motorist.

This was the scene which disturbedthe peace in ChepstoweRoad in Tijerhof lastweek. Standingnext to police officers a trem-bling resident struggled to give a report topolice after being hijacked.

Just after 20:00 a second police vehicle ar-rived on the scene while patrollers of the Ti-jerhof Neighbourhood Watch stood nearby.

Speaking to TygerBurger, the man whowished to remain anonymous explained hearrived in Chepstowe Road shortly before19:00 to see someone at an apartment com-plex. Unable to see the person, he switchedoff his vehicle and tried to call his friendwhofailed to answer.

“When I came here I saw the lights wereon so I realisedmy friend was inside. I triedto call. It was just ringing. A fewminutes lat-

er I saw people sur-rounding the car. There were aboutsix men.”

He explained theman who stoodnext to the driver’swindow wasarmed and orderedhim to get out ofthe car. He had re-moved his keysfrom the ignitionand said he “froze

in shock”.“He tried to open it, but the carwas locked.

He shouted: ‘Open, open’. Iwas trying to lookfor my key, he broke the window and theglass came at me. They started pulling meby force and they pulled me out. I struggledwith them and one of them hit me with thegun on my head,” he said showing his headwound.

Remain calm during hijackingThe men then made off in his white 316i

BMW.According to Milnerton police spokesper-

son Warrant Officer Daphne O’Reilly thereis no indication that the suspects had anyother vehicle.

No arrests have been made as yet and thevehicle has not yet been recovered.

O’Reilly says during a hijacking it’s im-portant to remain calm and not to threatenor challenge the hijacker.

She saysmotorists are advised to do exact-ly as told by the hijackers and surrenderyour vehicle and move away. “Don’t reachforyourpurse orvaluables. Thismay threat-en thehijackers andyoumayget hurt. Leaveeverything in the vehicle.

Don’t show aggressionRemember – the hijackers will be as nerv-

ous, if notmore so, thanyouare.Answer anyquestions truthfully, especially with re-gards to firearms. Even if you’re shockedand terrified, try to listen to and understandexactly what the hijackers want from you,”she says.

O’Reilly also advises motorists not toshow any signs of aggression and to keeptheir hands visible to the hijacker, givingthem the assurance that one does not intendfighting back. “Gather as much informationas possible without posing a threat. Howmany hijackers are there, what they are

wearing, and any facial and physical fea-tures. This does not mean staring at your at-tackers,making it obvious that you are look-ing at ways of identifying them. Know thefull description and registration number ofyour vehicle and call the police emergencynumber 10111,” she concludes.

One woman said she took offence to thestatement as she rented a property and hasmade several contributions to her commu-nity including starting a street committeeand attending community meetings.“I have hosted social gatherings for

neighbours to get to know each other, thefact that I am here tonight proves that Igive a sh*t,” she said as others applauded.A proposal was tabled that to address the

confusion, the association now be calledthe Table View Residents’ Associationwhich meant it would include both rate-payers and those who rented properties. With growing concern about the repre-

sentation of councillors across wards 4, 23and 107, politics also took centre stage atthe meeting. While several residents voiced their un-

happiness with DA councillors, Alhadeffsaid many allegations had been levelledagainst the TVRA on social media and inemails.Among these are that Alhadeff supports

the Freedom Front Plus, to which he saidhe was insulted.Asked to clarify his statement, he ex-

plained while he supported individuals’rights to be a member of a political party,he was insulted by the claim that he was

a member of any party. He said the TVRAwas an apolitical orga-

nisation which focussed on civic mattersand residents’ concerns.Alhadeff further said the association

would be failing in its mandate if it was in-volved in politics.“We are also not funding an independent

candidate as claimed by some. Those whomade the allegations were invited to thismeeting, I do not see them here,” he said.Possible futureplans for erf 1117was also

a hot topic and the participation of TableView and Melkbosstrand residents at a re-cent public meeting was noted.

A presentationwas given byCity of CapeTown councillorGrantHaskinwho said hewas intrigued by the allegations of fraudu-lent documents. For this reason he explained how he ob-

tained the same documents in the posses-sion of residents.Alhadeff gave a video representation, il-

lustrating how he obtained the documentsand explained they met with City repre-sentatives and were waiting for feedback.

A rise in the amount of vehicle-relatedthefts in the Table View precinct havepolice concerned.

According to a report released by TableView police station thefts out of motor vehi-cles is wide spread across the precinct af-fecting residents from 19 to 71.The report gives a comprehensive over-view of the type of items reported stolenwith 33% of all cases reported in June relat-ed to theft of computer equipment. Cash andclothing are also a hit among thieves as to-gether they account for 26% of theft cases. The report states 10% of complainants re-ported their sunglasses stolen while GlobalPositioning Systems (GPS), radios and toolsmake up 6% of all reported cases. In additionhandbags, iPods and shoes leftin vehicles also feature in the report totall-ing 3% of all reported cases.Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adriana

Chandler says none of these cases have beenlinked to the jamming of remotes and ex-plains the items reported stolen were left inclear view of the thieves.“It’s important to not leave valuables inclear sight, rather take it with you. Lockyour vehicle and activate your alarm or in-stall one if you do not have one. If residentsfollow these tips, they will not give thethieves any reason to break into your car,”she says. She also says Sector 2, which covers Park-

lands and Sunningdale has recorded themost theft out of motor vehicle cases withmostly male complainants. In June, Table View Community PoliceForum (CPF) released a series of pictures

showing vehicles which had its wheels sto-len and left on bricks. According to varioussocial media reports, several residentswoke up to find their vehicles either onbricks or on the ground.According to a Facebook post by the Park-

lands Neighbourhood Watch (PNW) onMonday 29 June they were aware of two in-cidents in Avonmouth Crescent and two in-cidents in St John’s Close. The watch alsoreported cases inFalcon, Trinity andNorth-ridge crescents.Chandler says many of cases reported re-

lated to stolen tyres in Sector 2. She says res-idents should opt to park their vehicles in-

side garages and always activate theiralarms. Chandler says it may be helpful toinstall sensor activated lights near your ve-hicle.“Table View police are working closely

with neighbourhoodwatches, security com-panies and other external role players tocombat crime of this nature, but we cannotcurb itwithout the constant help of our com-munity. Residents should take all precau-tionarymeasures to ensure that this type ofcrime does not happen to them,” Chandlerincludes.V Have you been a victim? Send your letter [email protected].

‘Deaf or dead’ not the only optionsMICHELLE LINNERT

@linnertmb

A medical doctor from Stellenberg al-most went deaf from TB medicationafter contracting the dreaded multi-

drug resistant (MDR) strain of the disease. Now she is advocating for cheaper, safer

new antibiotics for TB treatment throughTB Proof, the NGO she now works for.“I didn’t lose my hearing completely,” Dr

Dalene von Delft told TygerBurger.“The TB medication that causes hearing

loss is anantibioticweuse to treatMDRTB,”she said. This strain of the bacteria causes the same

disease as “regular” TB, butDalene explainsit is resistant to first-line antibiotics becauseit has become mutated.Dalene contracted MDR TB through her

work in 2010. Because the bacteria is air-borne, inhaling it causes the majority (up tothree quarters) ofMDR cases in the country.“We are currently using a very old regi-

men of medication with a very old combina-tion of drugs for treatingMDRTB,” she said.

Hearing loss a sideeffectThis usually consists of six or seven differ-

ent kinds of antibiotics – including a groupof antibiotics called the aminoglycosides –used to treat different types of bacterial in-fections.“These antibiotics are widely used; they

are ‘old’ drugs which have been in use sincethe 1950s. It is still frequently used in hospi-tals, but for short periods, usually less thantwo weeks. In MDR TB one has to use it longterm,” she said. The World Health Organisation’s (WHO)

guidelines recommended treatment withaminoglycosides for MDR TB for eightmonths, with total treatment lasting up totwo years.“Unfortunately one of the side-effects is

hearing loss.”Someof the antibiotics from the aminogly-

coside class most frequently used in SouthAfrica are kanamycin and amikacin, Dalenesaid.“Because these drugs are already 60 years

old, their patents have long expired and

they’re very cheap and made by differ-ent manufacturers,” she said.“Yes, it comes with a warning that it

could cause hearing loss, but it’s notlike you can sue the drug company, be-cause it is used ‘off-label’.“This means the drug companies do

not recommend long term use of thesedrugs for the treatment ofMDRTB, butdoctors are forced to use these drugs asthere are no alternatives, and it is adeadly disease,” Dalene said. The WHO recommends regular

screening for hearing loss by means ofaudiograms,” she said, explaining thismeant hearing at different frequenciesand amplitudes.“We don’t understand how it causes

hearing loss, but it affects the nerve re-sponsible for hearing – the cochlearnerve – and the outer hair cells whichpick up high frequency tones, are af-fected first,” she said.“Low tones still sound okay for pa-

tients, but they start struggling withconsonants ‘f’, ‘s’, ‘k’, ‘p’, ‘t’. Theymightnot pick up high soprano notes.“Sometimes people are unable to

pick up if their high frequency hearingis deteriorating. Some report ‘goingdeaf’ overnight.”Studies estimate that about one third

of MDR patients lose their hearing, Da-lene said. And there are no alterna-tives.“You either become deaf or dead. In most

cases you cannot stop the old treatment eventhough you might lose your hearing.”SowhenDalene learnt thesewere her only

two choices, she tried to access a new drugbeing tested in South Africa.“I didn’t want to accept that. If I became

deaf, I wouldn’t be able to listen to music orconversations anymore; I wouldn’t be ableto practice as a doctor anymore,” she said. She spoke topeoplewhohavehadcochlear

implants, Dalene said, one of them a nursewho contracted MDR TB and had the im-plant done, but still had trouble using astethoscope.“I realised this was a career ending situa-

tion. Week after week it just got worse. My

hearing deteriorated. Then I heard of a newdrug – the first new TB drug in 40 years,”she said.Janssenpharmaceuticals (part of Johnson

& Johnson) were doing clinical trials inCape Town on a drug called Bedaquiline, of-fering a slim chance of hope.“Treatment of MDR TB has been at a dead

end until recently.”She found out about the newdrug and con-

tacted the principal investigator and tried toget the drug available on compassionate use.“Sometimes they make new drugs availa-

ble before the clinical trials are completed, seeing as these can take years and years. Italready took about 25 years to develop Be-daquiline.

“We are very lucky. So far small studiessuggest that this newdrug is effective andthere’s a chance it might replace the olddrug,” she said.“It was a gamble, but I applied to be a

part of their programme. Luckily thedrug company and theMedicines ControlCouncil approved my participation. Itended up being very successful,” she said.

Advocating for new drugDalene only lost her high frequency

hearing and can still use a stethoscope.“I took it for six months and there were

nomajor side effects. So I started advocat-ing for it. There are some concerns thatthe new drug has an effect on the heart, but it seems to be safe so far.“They’ve opened the clinical access

programme for the new drug. The drughas been around for about two years.“This year our government decided the

results of the drug look so promising, al-though it still costs about R10 000 toR15 000 per patient per six-month treat-ment, they are going to make it availablefor certain patients in the public sector,”she said.Another new development – with a

South African technology partner – is theKUDUwave portable clinical audiometer.“Now clinic sisters can readily test peo-

ple’s hearing, because this machine isportable,” Dalene said.If a patient qualified to get the new

drug, the cost would be about $900 for a six-month course, Dalene said.“Yes, it’s still a bit expensive, but how can

you put a price onhearing? One cochlear im-plant costs about R250,000,” she said. The drug company recently donated 30 000

treatments for MDR patients globally. Thedonation programme, led by USAID, willmake the drug available to patients from lowincome countries, Dalene said.According to her the situation is looking

a bit better now in SA.“Now we have portable audiometers and

have started screening patients. If hearingloss is picked up, they can apply to qualifyfor the new drug. There is hope on the hori-zon.”

Dr Dalene von Delft advocates for a new MDR TB drugthat has shown its effectiveness in patients like herself.

Home Birth South Africa will host agathering inWest Riding for individu-als interested in having a home birth.According to a statement SouthAfri-

News of a new development worth morethan R10m along Koeberg Road has causedexcitement among residents in Ysterplaat,Rugby and Brooklyn. The development, 91 on Koeberg, will see

the erection of a new mall which is set to becompleted at the end of July. The property is owned by the Olla Family

Trust for the past 35 years and a new initia-tive by Betty Olla, who manages the trust,is believed to be the start of urban renewalalong Koeberg Road.Among some of the features, residents can

expect a spice shop, perfume shops, hair-dresser, coffee shop and beautician amongothers. The new chic building has been de-signed by Sabcon Architects and built byLentra Construction.Consultant RashaanWarley explains Koe-

berg Road has experienced a slump in busi-ness due to the general degradation of thearea. He says this development is focussedon kick-starting urban renewal along thisintegral link to the city centre. With thismall, developers hope surround-

ing property owners would see the value inimproving and uplifting the area.“The trust has taken the stance to try and

wake up that entire area. That little stretchof Koeberg Road has just gone down and thetrust felt if one landowner takes the stanceand upgrades their property, others wouldsoon follow,” he says.Warley says they initially considered hav-

ing one anchor tenant, but due to parkingrequirements they opted to provide smallerindividually owned shops to aid the develop-ment of smaller businesses.Olla explains with many people returning

to Brooklyn and surrounding areas, thecommercial hub provides little for resi-dents.

For this reason, the mall will also includeATMs with security guards.Plans for the development were approved

in May last year.Olla explains due to a lease with Lewis

Stores which only expired in the beginningof this year, work was postponed. He says construction is set to be completed

at the end of July and tenants are expectedto start moving in during August.Olla explains they are still looking to fill

two spots which include a bedding or furni-ture store and a butchery or a mini medicalcentre.According to Rudi Wolter, chairperson of

the Brooklyn, Ysterplaat and Rugby Resi-dents’ Association (BYRRA) in recent years

they have noted the degradation of KoebergRoad with concern. He explainsmanyproperty owners appear

to be disinterested in not only maintainingtheir properties but also in uplifting thearea.“Over the yearswehave seenmanypeople

lose interest and this has resulted in manygood businesses moving elsewhere. This de-velopment has stirred excitement and pridein the area and we welcome initiatives likethis. We also hope other property ownerswill see the contribution of this family trustand follow suit,” he concludes.V What are your thoughts on this development andthe condition of Koeberg Road? The construction of a new storage facili-ty for a major pharmaceutical alongSandown Road has marked the dawn

of a new industrial era for the greater TableView community.

Known as the Rivergate development, thenew area will see the introduction of a com-mercial precinct, mixed use industrial, astation precinct and a mixed use residentialarea. It is being undertaken by the Milner-ton Estates Property Developers and AskaProperty Group.

In recent weeks, many Table View motor-ists have watched as the building, owned byCipla Medpro has taken shape. Accordingto a statement on their website, a hard hatevent was held earlier this year to mark theconstruction of a new, purpose built16 000m² pharmaceutical storage facility inRivergate Park.

According to chief executive Paul Miller75 000 kilograms of product will be movedthrough the facility monthly, of which amajor portion will form part of national ten-der supplies.

“This structure will serve as the mainhub for all imports and distribution intoSouthern Africa and will enable us to pro-vide a wider variety and greater quantityof the required medication to the Depart-

ment of Health,” he says. The new facility is expected to be com-

plete by November. According to Dave Ma-cleod- Elliot, sales director for the AskaProperty Group this is just the beginningand motorists will soon start noticing moredevelopment on the site.

Goodbye taxis, hello MyCiti busesOver the next few weeks, the City of

Cape Townwill withdraw the remain-der ofminibus taxis that havebeenop-

erating inAtlantis, Table View andDunoon,as the roll-out of Phase 1 of the MyCiTi ser-vice is near completion.

According to a statement, the roll-out ofPhase 1 is expected to be completed by theend of August. The Citywould have compen-sated up to 337 taxi operators from TableView, Dunoon and Atlantis to the value ofnearly R222m in exchange for their vehiclesand operating licences to make way for theMyCiTi bus service. City mayoral commit-tee member for transport Brett Herron ex-plains the City is also offering the minibustaxi operators the opportunity to join Kidro-

gen – theMyCiTi vehicle operating company(VOC) along the West Coast – as sharehold-ers.

“We are offering their staff employmentwithin theMyCiTi system, either asMyCiTibus drivers once they have concluded theirdriver training for which the City is paying,as part of stationmanagement, or within ad-vertising or landscaping,” he says. Minibustaxi operators who receive compensationmust surrender their operating licences andvehicles. Furthermore, they are obliged tohand over the names of all of their employ-ees to Transport for Cape Town.

The remainder of theminibus taxis affect-ed are as follows:

. 16minibus taxiswill bewithdrawn from

Atlantis in the second week in July, follow-ing the roll-out of the remainder of theMyCi-Ti feeder routes over the weekend. Thisbrings the total number of minibus taxiwithdrawals in Atlantis to 149.

. 90minibus taxiswill bewithdrawn fromTable View and Dunoon by Monday 31 Au-gust, following the roll-out of the remainderof theMyCiTi feeder routes thatwill linkDu-noon toCenturyCityviaOmurambastation. This will bring the total number of minibustaxi withdrawals in Table View andDunoonto 229. With the exception of minibus taxistransporting commuters from Witsand toAtlantis, no other minibus taxis will be al-lowed to operate within or on route to Atlan-tis after Friday 10 July. Engagements are

currently underway for the possibility of in-troducing minibus taxi services to destina-tions outside Atlantis that are not beingserved by MyCiTi as yet, such as Malmes-bury, Darling and Bellville. These negotia-tions, however, have not been concluded asyet.

Furthermore, another 12 minibus taxi op-erators from the Ysterplaat Taxi Associa-tionwhowere not offered compensationwillbe allowed to operate on specific routes untiltheir licence period expires. “Even thoughwe are removing 106 taxis from the roadsresidents will still see minibus taxis drivingaround as a significant number of taxis willstill be providing transport to residents com-ing from other suburbs.”

A new traffic calming policy, aimedat addressing a backlog of 500 projectsand protecting vulnerable pedestri-ans such as children on their way toschool, is being considered by theCity of Cape Town.

According to a statement, residentsare requested to air their views dur-ing the public participation processthat is currently underway.

City mayco member for transport,Brett Herron explains each year theyreceivemore than 400 requests for theimplementation of traffic calmingmeasures. There is currently a back-log of 500 traffic calming projects tothe value of R30 million.

Counting among these are requestsfor speed humps, raised pedestriancrossings and intersections, mini-traffic circles, road markings androad narrowing as devices to forcedrivers to slow down on residentialroads. “Over the past years, we haveseen an increase in the number of re-quests for traffic calming measures, which can be attributed to the deteri-oration in driver discipline and a gen-eral disregard for the rules of the roadby all types of road user.

“Given the current backlog and thesteady increase in requests, it has be-come necessary to revisit the currentregime. As such, a new policy whichseeks to prioritise the implementa-tion of these measures where pedes-trians, and particularly children, aremost vulnerable at schools, parks andlibraries is now on the table andready for public comment.”

He explains the purpose of the newpolicy is to provide for a system thatis financially sustainable in the long-run; responsive to critical safetyproblems on residential roads; andthat will assist in eliminating thebacklog within a reasonable time.

Part of the newpolicy proposes thatthe transport department implementtraffic calmingmeasures on roads ad-jacent to existing schools as a matterof priority with the benchmark of atleast 50 schools per year.

It also proposes that ward council-lors may identify, motivate and fundtraffic calming measures in responseto a proven history of accidents on aroad or in response to a recent andvery urgent incident that demandsimmediate intervention.

In addition the policy makes provi-sion for individuals or organisationsmay also fund traffic calming meas-ures, subject to the prescribed condi-tions

The draft policy also lists variousdirectives about where and how traf-fic calming measures will and can beimplemented.V Public participation on the new policy isSunday 16 August and you can find the policyat your nearest subcouncil office or library. You can also visit www.capetown.gov.za.

LEGAL DEDUCTIONS FROM SOCIAL GRANTS

The SASSA Payment Card

Which Deduction Is Legal?

How can SASSA assist social grant beneficiaries with illegal deductions?

Safety tips for all social grant beneficiaries:

one

0800 60 10 11

Western Cape Helpline @ (021) 469 0235 or 0800 60 10 11.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), would like to provide communities with the

following information regarding social grant deductions:

The SASSA branded payment card, was introduced to allow social grant beneficiaries the convenience of

accessing their social grant anywhere and at any time. The SASSA payment card is a debit card and

allows for cash to be withdrawn from ATM's, purchases to be made from suppliers and legal deductions to

be made. The introduction of the SASSA payment card into the banking system unfortunately also

provided an opportunity for social grant beneficiaries to be exploited through unauthorized deductions.

Before the social grant is paid into the bank account of a beneficiary only deduction is allowed to be

made for a funeral policy, which may not exceed 10% of the total value of the social grant. This premium is

deducted by SASSA before the social grant is paid to the beneficiary and then paid over to the relevant

insurance company.

Once the social grant is paid into the bank account that is linked to the SASSA debit card, legal deductions

instituted by financial entities will take effect for purchases that were made ie: airtime, electricity, micro-

loans, credit instalments, policy premiums etc. Any disputes should be resolved directly between the social

grant beneficiary and the entity that instituted the deduction.

Social grant beneficiaries are requested to report any illegal deductions to the nearest SASSA

office/service point where they will be assisted to complete a claim form so that the matters can be

investigated. Alternatively beneficiaries can contact the SASSA call centre @ where

SASSA staff will record the relevant details and refer the matter for investigation. Where beneficiaries have

not authorized deductions or for their SASSA cards/account details to be used by others, the deducted

amounts will be paid back to them. This is usually done within a period of 3 working days. Should any

social grant beneficiary not receive the required assistance from a SASSA office or staff member this must

be reported to the office manager or the

• Do not to respond to SMS messages offering airtime, electricity and other services. By responding

to these messages, beneficiaries are actually taking on a "subscription" service and the amounts

will be deducted off the bank account through the EFT debit system every month.

• Do not use your SASSA payment card as security for loans and to purchase any financial services

products.

• Do not authorize deductions to be made against your card except for the one funeral policy

deduction that should not exceed 10% of the social grant value.X1Q9Q24H-AL080715

For several years now I havecommunicated with councillorsJames Vos and Joy McCarthyregarding the N7 past DuNoon. My major concern was thevibracrete wall bordering theN7 alongside Dunoon whichhas been stolen and brokendown piece by piece, allowingaccess by both vehicles andpedestrians straight onto abusy National Highway.

At first then Councillor Vosdismissed the vibracrete wallas the National Goverment’sresponsibility but concededthat it was in actual factprobably the City’s responsibi-lity as it was situated well offthe motorway borderingDunoon. Ideally after 4 or 5years of shrugging off responsi-bility I think it’s high noonthat the City took responsibili-ty in protecting the residentsof Dunoon as well as passingmotorists who have also had torisk stone throwing incidents. This wall needs to be immedia-tely sealed, repaired andmaintained and motorwaylighting installed. This wouldbe a more economical andfaster solution; with a bridgebeing built in time (I don’tthink the number of pedestri-ans crossing the highwaywarrants a bridge that maytake several more years -a wellmaintained safety wall shouldprevent these incidents).

Please repair N7wall at DuNoon

“N7 footbridge proposed”, TB, 1July refers: I too have seenthese boys practising soccer onthis little field and peoplerunning across the N7 to go toDunoon, when driving by totravel to Table View. I thoughtit quite unsafe for them to doso as the motorists are allspeeding along this badlyconstructed single road, whichbecomes a bottleneck of traffic, before you get to the set ofrobots.

At night and early hours ofthe morning the N7 is also notvery well lit and there is roomfor improving the street lights. Also a camera at this corneropposite the field, will slow themotorists down. A footbridgewould be the solution, but inthe interim try and get theabovementioned in place.

MARY GIRDEmail

N7 not the place forroadside soccer

I am relieved to see the N7“illegal crossing” becoming atopic of conversation. Lastweek there was a fatality that Ihad the misfortune of drivingpast and again yesterday onthe Plattekloof turnoff, not onlymaking me late for work butdisturbing me having to see aperson, only halfway covered

N7 footbridge willmake it safe for all

in that silver “blanket”. It isnot only the sight that disturbsme, it is the fact that I might bethe next person to accidentallyhit a person crossing the roadillegally and irresponsibly, causing me to spend time andmoney defending myself incourt and having to live withthe guilt. I drive a companyvehicle and make a point of notspeeding and obeying the rulesof the road. In the morningsbetween 6:30 and 8:00 it’s nearlyimpossible to speed anyway, because there is so muchtraffic. When driving to work, there are at least 20 peopletrying to take a chance andcross the national road. Even at60 or 80km/h you will kill apedestrian if you hit them, butthe reality is that the nationalroads have a limit of 120km/h,so its not illegal to drive thatspeed. The pedestrians need afootbridge that they can safelycross and get to work! I needthem to have a foodbridge so Ican get to work safely too!

ISTINE KRIELEmail

Re.“N7 footbridge proposed”,TB, 1 July: There is a vibracre-te wall which has been brokenso they can cross. One bridgewon’t make a difference. At thefootbridge over Bosmansdamroad at Summer Greens theyhad to put a fence on the islandand they still cross and walkaround it. A colleague wholives there told me he is nothappy using the bridge as it’sused as a toilet and a place tosleep by vagrants. I suggestthey close the holes in the walland fine people for jaywalking.

LLOYD LOMASEmail

One footbridge willnot be enough

Re. “N7 footbridge proposed”,TB, 1 July: A culvert under thefreeway already exists betweenDunoon and Richwood. Thiscould be cleaned out andlighting installed. Securityguards could be placed at eitherend of the culvert for safepassage of pedestrians at peakhours. Why go to the extraexpense of building a footbridgewhen there is already a soluti-on right under our noses?Maybe a 2-metre high solidconcrete wall could be erectedalong part of the centre island.

HILARYEmail

Could a wall beanswer to N7 woes?

“Questions raised over statevehicles”, TB, 1 July, refers:City council always state thatthere’s a lack of vehicles. Usinga company (State) vehicle totravel to work and back is thisnot a fringe benefit? If so, isthis not taxable? Would beinterested in seeing a payslipor two.

LEWENSKIEKIE

The streets of Elsies River may be betterknown for its threats of crime and gang-sterism but the smooth sax sounds of

Donveno Prins has proved that music canempower you to achieve some positivedreams.

On Friday and Saturday you will get thechance to discover that journey when hehosts From Elsies to the World at the BaxterConcert Hall to give you some insights intohis career. It’s a journey that is still on a posi-tive path but like so many musicians on theCape Flats it started in the church, leadingto Christmas Bands, and eventually touringthe world. “When I was still in school I neverin a million years thought that this would bemy bread and butter,” he says thinking backto his beginnings.

Joining Abdullah Ibrahim’s jazz pro-gramme led to his ability flourishing gettingchosen to be part of the National Youth Bandand touring to many festivals across theworld, but since then he has become a stapleof the South African music scene.

Best known for his performances in pro-ductions such as Intimate Nights Chapter II,Love, Jazz & Duets and Music Alla Kaap, he’salso worked alongside renowned local artistssuch as Lloyd Cele, Loyiso Bala, Jimmy Dlud-lu, Judith Sephuma, PJ Powers as well as La-dysmith Black Mambazo.

“It’s always been exciting to work with allthese musicians but some of the highlightsof my career and travels was when I got theopportunity to perform with Jonathan But-ler in Kenya, Nigeria, Cape Town and Johan-nesburg.

“Also recording with Kirk Whalum on his

latest Gospel According To Jazz Chapter 4with bassist Jonathan Roubain was a phe-nomenal experience.”

With this show at the Baxter he is invitingaudiences to discover that journey into mu-sic. “This show has also kind of forced me todig a bit deeper into my heritage to find outexactly where I come from and the impact ithad on where I’m at now.”

From Elsies to the World is directed by Ali-stair Izobell and includes original composedmusic, and will be performed in English andAfrikaans with some amazing stories thatwill make for an enjoyable night out.

Tickets are R120 and booking is throughComputicket on 0861 915 8000, online atwww.computicket.co.za or at any ShopriteCheckers outlet.V For discounted corporate or block bookings, fundraisers and charities, contact Sharon on 021 680 3962or Carmen on 021 680 3993 during office hours.

KatlehoPuleMohale (19), a formerhead-boy at El Shaddai Christian School inDurbanville has a passion for helping

others in need.Kat, as he is known tohis friendswas iden-

tified as a leader and duly attended two pres-tigious leadership programmes inNewYorkCity, in 2011 and 2012.When Kat returned from the USA, he used

left-over pocket money from his trip over-seas to buy soccer boots and shin guards foran underprivileged deaf soccer team, thePhillipi Deaf Stars. This gesture was so well received that the

schoolboy swiftly launched a non-profit or-ganisation designed to assist township chil-dren with a passion for sports to receive therequisite equipment. The NPO, Katleho’s Give2Talent, also

knownasKG2T, has as its primary objectivethe donation of sports equipment to teamsand individuals from previously disadvan-taged areas. Others that have received fromKG2T thus far include u-15 soccer squadsfrom Klipheuwel FC, Naledi Stars FC andLiverpool-Portland FC.Kat has now progressed into the sport of

cricket, where in conjunction with DistrictNorth Cricket and the Peninsula CricketAcademy in Bellville, he has embarked ona drive to collect second-hand, unwanted orunused cricket equipment for re-distribu-tion to under-privileged schools.ThisGive2Talent cricket initiative, which

started about three weeks ago, is currentlydrivenbyDistrictNorthCricket, with sever-al second-hand kits having already beenfreelydonatedbyDistrictNorthyouth crick-eters. Besides the participation of severalnorthern suburbs schools in the drive, theEl Shaddai Christian School, Kat’s formerschool has also made a donation to the drivein the form of second-hand kits. Perfect

Bounce have recently come on board andhave made a generous cash donation.Anyone interested in joining this inspir-

ing initiative to uplift young cricketers andproviding them with the necessary equip-ment, can contact Kat via email katz-

[email protected] or 078 116 6342.The central drop-off location for all cricket

equipment is at the Peninsula Cricket Acad-emy situated at 8 Hof Street, Bellville. Con-tact Brent Julie on 071 842 2809 at the acade-my for more information.

The 20th edition of the Coke Cup kicked offat sports grounds across the city over theweekend. The competition has been unearthing lo-

cal talent since 1996, giving clubs in the localsoccer associations within the South Afri-can Football Association (Safa) a chance toreveal their strength within the amateurranks.PeninsulaBeverageshas put itsweight be-

hind the initiative again as the title sponsorsof the tournament.“The excitement of this competition is ex-

perienced not only in the senior ranks, butalso by the women soccer players and theu.18s,” Peninsula Beverages says in a state-

ment.415 clubs will compete in the tournament

which has seen the likes of Anele Ngcongca,Rivaldo Coetzee, Thulani Serero, BantuMzwakali and Clayton Daniels use it as aplatform to the PSL and beyond.“It is Safa Cape Town’s noble responsibili-

SAREL BURGER

kes/Northlink-kollege beklee by die seisoen
