The chaos started at 09:00.Power-starved traffic lights went

dark and road-users experienced thefirst bout of load-shedding last week Thurs-day.Somemight have wondered how people in

hospitals were coping, but nurses only reali-sed the power was off when they looked atthe traffic in the jam-packed streets. The luc-ky ones have generators.Some have solar panels, but this was no

guarantee – just ask EricMiles Cheshire Ho-me’sAlet Bosman.When their power cut outat 14:00 she stared in disbelief at the hun-dreds of solar panels on the home’s roof.Eskom’s power outtages caught everyone,

including the City of Cape Town, by surpri-se. TygerBurger only received the city’spress release by 10:33, more than an hour af-ter the first interruptions started.

Rain in Mpumalanga“The City regrets the inconvenience cau-

sed,” read the release.The stage three load shedding (the highest

level possible)was apparently caused by tor-rential rain in Mpumalanga.According to Neil Ballantyne, the city’s

spokesperson for electricity services, thiswas the first time stage three came into acti-on – hence the confusing load shedding sche-dule made public.This schedule readMilnerton 1,Milnerton

2, Montague Gardens 1 and Montague Gar-dens 2 will have load-shedding from 06:00 to08:30, from 14:00 to 16:30 and again from 22:00to 00:30. Some wondered if they were livingin Koeberg Road 1 or Koeberg Road 2...As it turns out, Sanddrift is in Milnerton

had been like a brake on industry. We’ve he-ard the wet coal story before and it turnedout the real problemwas thatEskom’s stock-pile of coal had been allowed to run downto just a few days. The rain was just the laststraw.” He said managing coal supplies wasbasic to the industry. “It rains every sum-mer over there. It is a normal operationalproblem and one that is dealt with by simpleplanning”.

Three northern suburbs locals are partof the cast for The Sound of Music, cur-rently on stage at the Artscape Theatre.

Table View’s Bethany Dickson is playingthe role of Maria, while Ché-Jean Jupp fromPlattekloof Glen and Adam Ferguson fromDurbanville play two of the Von Trapp child-ren.

Bethany has a very special connection tothe role. She played one of the Von Trappchildren when she was a child herself, whileher mother, Julie Dickson, played the roleof Maria.

“It’s very special to be able to fill thoseshoes,” Bethany says.

Her other theatre work includes playingSharpay Evans in the South African produc-tion of High School Musical Live On Stage,the role of Sandy in Grease, and the role ofBetty Schaefer in Sunset Boulevard, forwhich she has been nominated for a Fleurdu Cap award.

Bethany says she hasn’t quite digested thenews of her nomination yet, and that she isvery honoured and thrilled.

“I’m kind of flabbergasted,” she says.Having been a fan of The Sound of Music

before auditioning, Bethany says she had totry and clear her mind of anybody else’s in-terpretations of Maria to prepare for the ico-nic role. She points out that musical peopletend to catch on to what other people do veryquickly and says it was a huge task for herto not play the part like Julie Andrews, whoplayed Maria in the movie.

“I had to freshen my mind, but start at thevery beginning,” she jokes.

A ‘different’ MariaBethany says she is doing a lot of unexpec-

ted things with the character and giving hera different flavour, while maintaining thequalities that people love about her.

Just like her character, Bethany – whoused to be a teacher – loves children.

Adam and Ché-Jean have been singing herpraises, noting how supportive she is.

The 11-year-old Ché-Jean, a pupil at Ken-ridge Primary School, says his teachers, hisprincipal and his classmates have been verysupportive in helping him juggle his school-work with his work in the play.

It was actually one of his teachers whosuggested he audition for the production. Hewent through an intense process to land therole of Kurt von Trapp.

Ché-Jean says he was so excited when heheard he had the part that he almost burstout crying.

He is no stranger to performing. Ché-Jeanhas been entertaining since he was just twoyears old and regularly competes in the Ty-gerberg Eisteddfod in the singing, poetry,unprepared reading, Xhosa and guitar cate-gories. He is also a regular competitor in theMonte Vista Idols competition, which he hashad to miss this year, as he is already on sta-ge at the Artscape.

While he has thought of acting as a futureprofession, he says he would like to becomean archaeologist or palaeontologist.

He thanked director Frank Thompson and

choreographer Johnny Bowles as well as theother directors for all they taught him du-ring preparations for the show.

No stranger to the stageGrade 8 pupil Adam Ferguson is also no

stranger to performing. The SA’s Got Talentfinalist is a regular winner of local talentcompetitions and, like Ché-Jean, also regu-larly takes part in Eisteddfods.

He is in the top 25 of Scout SA, a nationaltalent competition, and he will be competingfor a chance to go to America.

One of the highlights of Adam’s career isperforming at Cape Town Stadium for theunder-20 Soccer World Cup. “It was really so-mething to perform in that stadium. It’s mas-sive and it’s a really awesome experience,”he says.

His singing school, The Stage in Bellville,encouraged him to audition.

“This is truly an experience of a life time,”the young actor says. He is playing the roleof Friedrich von Trapp, the older brother ofthe Von Trapp family, who Adam describesas aloof.

The Fairmont learner says he has hardlybeen at school since he started with rehear-sals for The Sound of Music, but says theschool has been very accommodating.

Although he is passionate about perfor-ming, young Adam says he wants to studyto have something to fall back on and is inte-rested in studying medicine one day.

He has also been invited to join the castwhen the production moves to Johannes-burg at the end of its Cape Town run at theend of the month. After Johannesburg, theproduction will also be moving on to Singa-

Every single blown kiss made it to Sandra’sheart – a kiss to say “I love you”, a kiss tosay “Thank you”, and a kiss to give herstrength.“Beat the cancer and get better soon,” it

seemed to say.The emotional teacher could not hear the

heartfelt songs or well-wishes of the child-ren that morning, because she was standingbehind a Panorama Medi-Clinic window.Yet, the message was clear – the three to

four-year-olds of Milnerton’s Covenant KidsPre-Primary School miss her very much.Sandra Wright (59) of Edgemead has tou-

ched countless numbers of lives in her ca-reer as a pre-primary teacher.She has left a mark on each child who was

privileged enough to have her as their tea-cher, yet Sandra has a different view.Every single child she was privileged

enough to teach left a mark on her.And these marks were never deeper than

those left on Friday when about 15 pre-pri-mary children, assistant Sonia Kleine andowner Stefan Pflocksch waved at her fromthe hospital’s parking lot.They sang while holding up flowers to

her, called out to her while carrying well-wishing placards and blew kisses to herwhile she stood crying at the hospital win-dow.Sandra is currently undergoing chemo-

therapy for Lymphoma, a type of blood can-cer. She will have to go back to hospital on17March to undergo another 22 hour chemosession.TygerBurger spoke to her on Friday, the

very same day onwhich shewas temporari-ly discharged.The children’s flowers and personalised

“get well soon” messages meant the worldto the surprised teacher.“I never expected this... It was the most

wonderful, awesome, awesome moment forme and I just love them so very, verymuch...”Her fight against the tears was lost before

it even started.“They mean so much to me.“They aremy life. They aremy reason for

gettingup in themorning. They’vemademylife complete. They’ve enriched my life bey-ond measure...”One the children’s grandmother, Cheryl

Braude, organised the surprise visit andtold TygerBurger that Sandra is strugglingto pay her medical bills.Cheryl has made it her mission to raise

as much funds as possible to help the tea-cher of not one, but two of her grandchild-ren.So far she has only raised just over R1 000,

so it goes without saying that she is wellshort of the minimum amount that needs tobe paid.While her grandchildren in particular

pray every night for Sandra it is time for thecommunity to unite behind this good cause.

ness and ability to defend oneself physical-ly is by no means the only skill necessaryfor personal safety. Personal safety is a ho-listic disciplinewhich includesmuchmorethan the willingness and ability to defendoneself on a physical level.Don’t get me wrong. I fully believe the

physical side is crucial and I recommendthat any person in South Africa becomeskilled in it (more on this in later articles).However, it’s not wise to think that phys-ical skills alone will keep you safe. By defi-nition physical self-defence skills are forwhen things get physical. However, thephysical side to anattackor to crime is onlyone part in the development, or process, ofthe crime.There are many points in the develop-

ment of the crime inwhich you can subvertor discourage the criminal. We will delveinto this process along which crime deve-lops next week.For this week I want us to expand our

thinking on personal safety.

Holistic personal safetySpider Web: A good analogy to think

about personal safety is that of a spiderweb. A spider web is strong because it iswoven of many strands of strong fibre. Thestronger the individual fibres, and the mo-re strands there are, the stronger the webis. In termsof your ownpersonal safety youwant to start to think in terms of thesestrands. You want to understand what thedifferent strands are, how to make themstrong and thenhow toweave them into yo-ur own personal-safety web. It is into thisweb that one has to add the the strand ofphysical self-defence skills. This strandhasto be just as strong, and as well woven, asany of the others – but by no means do Irecommend it being the only strand of yourweb.Personal safety is a web of different

strandswoven together. Learn about them,make them strong and weave them into yo-ur life.The more proficient you become in all of

these strands the more difficult a targetyou become. The old self-defence adagerings true: If you don’t want to be an easyvictim become a hard target. Always re-member most criminals are very intent onkeeping themselves safe and free fromharm. The harder target you become theeasier targets there will be around you. Onone level this will help you to stay safe buton another level this creates a responsibili-ty in you – to start to educate those aroundyou about their own personal safety.To truly fight back against crimeweneed

se tuin nesgemaak het, het omstreeks een-uur toegesak op die elfjarige gevegshond,Zak, en die eenjarige worshond, Chloë, na-dat hulle die buurseun, Damian Martin,aangeval het. Hy het in die huis ingevlug enin die stort gaan skuil.

Ao. Hein Groenewald, eienaar van dietwee honde en ’n polisieman by die Good-wood-polisiekantoor, moes van die werkjaag om by die huis te kom toe ’n buurmanhom bel en vertel van die tragedie wat besigis om by sy huis af te speel.

“Ek was te laat om hulle te red,” het Heinkort ná die voorval gesê met die trane watvlak in syoë sit. “Hullewas soos onskinders.Zak is al 11 jaar deel van ons lewe.”

Chloë se lewelose liggaam het langs dieswembad gelê, terwyl Zak deur ’n veeartsuitgesit moes word, omdat daar slegs ’n ge-ringe kans was dat hy sou oorleef. Ten spytevan sy ontsteltenis op die dag van die onge-lukkige voorval, het Hein Maandag gesê hyis nie kwaad vir die mense uit wie se agter-plaas die bye gekom het nie.

“Wat sal dit my baat om kwaad te wees?Dit sal tog nie my honde terugbring nie. Ekis net verlig dat dit nie ’nmenswaswat deurdie bye aangeval is nie, anders kon die trage-die groter gewees het.

“My hond was oortrek met bye en as dit’n mens was, sou dit baie erg gewees het,”sê Hein. Dit is net sy seun, Hanno (12), watbaie geheg was aan Zak, wat nog sukkel omdie dood van die honde te verwerk.

“Hannowasnognieweer in die agterplaasnie. Hy praat ook nie oor wat gebeur het nie,maar ek kan sien die ding het hom lelik ge-rattle. ’n Man weet mos nie wat in ’n kindse kop aangaan nie. Hy was baie lief vir daai

hond.”Heinwas vol lof vir Damianwat, ten spyte

van die gevaar wat die bye vir hom ingehouhet, die honde se lewens probeer red het.

“Die bye was in hul agterplaas en hoewelek steeds voel hulle moes vroeër iets daar-aan gedoen, is ek bly Damianwoumy hondehelp. Hy het oormyheining gespring en pro-beer omdie bye van die honde te verjaag. Ditbeteken hy was regtig bekommerd oor hulwelstand.”

Damian het bevestig ’n byevanger het dievolgende dag van die bye ontslae geraak. Hyvoel vreeslik sleg oor wat gebeur het en isbereid om vir die uitgawes te betaal watHein moes aangaan om die hond te laat uit-sit.

“Ek voel so sleg, maar toe ek hoor die hon-de blaf benoud, het ek vir ’n ander buurmangevra of ek oor Hein se heining kan spring.Die kleintjie (Chloë) het net daar langs dieswembad gelê,” het hy gesê.

The ever-expanding MyCiTi bus networknow includes Dunoon.What was once an ambitious dream has

become a firm reality overnight.But it was, and in many cases is still, a

long night formotorists whomust navigatepast workers building the new bus lanes.Construction along Blaauwberg Road in

particular was a nightmare, as TygerBur-ger has reported on several times before.But now the fruits of hardship is finally

set to deliver dividents – traffic along Koe-berg Road will markedly improve.Brett Herron, the City of Cape Town’s

Mayoral Committee Member for Trans-port, offically opened theDunoonstationonThursday last week.The mammoth MyCiTi project, which

has now expanded all the way to Atlantis,is currently still in phase one of four.TygerBurger asked Herron what are the

long-term plans for MyCiTi.“The four-pase plan which was approved

in council in 2010 includes expansion intothe Northern suburbs in a later phase. Butalot has changed since then and we are loo-king to fast track the roll-out,” he elabora-tes. He adds that in three months the Inte-grated Public Transport Network Plan(IPTN)will be ready inwhich the entire pu-blic transport network for the city will be

planned.“There we will plan the roll-out and deci-

de what services we will provide to whichareas.”MyCiTi is currently connecting suburbs

along the West Coast with the City centreand all the way to Hout Bay.The Southern and Northern suburbs are

still relying on trains and according to Her-ron MyCiTi will never replace these.“In phase two the Metro South-East will,

however, connect Bellville to KhayelitshaandMitchell’s Plain. That will be MyCiTi’sfirst entry into the Northern Suburbs andlater connect them to Wynberg and Clare-mont,” he says.More locally, the extension of the main

route (T01) along Blaauwberg Road meansthat residents of Dunoon can now travel di-rectly to Table View, or continue to the citycentre. It will also provide a convenientconnection to Blouberg, Parklands, Melk-bosstrand, Century City and MontagueGardens via Racecourse Road. Passengerstravelling to these areaswill need to changebuses at the MyCiTi Table View station orWood station.In an attempt to make the experience for

and then divided themoney between oneanother.This was all the security needed to see

from the University of San Diego reckonsthe best way to knock that little smokingdevil off your shoulder is “medication andcounselling”.Anthenelli spoke to a handful of journa-

lists at Century City’s Crystal Towers lastweek Wednesday about the importance ofquitting and how to do it.

AddictionA cigarette is one of mankind’s most in-

telligent designs. More than a thousandchemicals in each cigarette aids the brainto make full use of the nicotene.If one lights a cigarette, the nicotene is

absorbed by the body very quickly, rea-ching the brain within 10 to 19 seconds. Itstimulates the central nervous system, in-creasing heart beat and blood pressure, le-ading to the heart needing more oxygen.It has been affirmed that the way in

which nicotine causes addiction is similarto drugs such as heroin and cocaine, so itwill come as no surprise to hear Anthenel-li saying it will be difficult to quit – proba-bly one of the most difficult things youmust ever do.The word “must” should be underlined,

italicised and bolded.Smokers often brush off statistics and

warnings.If I had to relay certain facts in a para-

graph, many smokers will do a remarka-ble job of forgetting sentences they justread.One in two persistent smokers will die

of a smoking-related illness and of these,nearly one in four will die of lung cancer.One in four. Lung cancer. One in four.One in two long-term smokers will die

prematurely as a result of smoking – halfof these in middle age.That means one in four long-term smo-

kers die between 30 and 45 years.All these statistics nag at the minds of

the 1.2 billion smokers worldwide, butthey ignore it.

Till tomorrow perhaps? Yes, tomorrowI’ll quit... But I tried last month, didn’t I?And I failed... So what’s the point?Anthenelli reckons it is time to stop fai-

lingwithmethods such as cold turkey, andtake medication specifically designed tohelp one stop.

MedicationChampix was apparently designed spe-

cifically to stop smoking and the antide-pressant drugZybanhas also beenprescri-bed and has yielded favourable results tostop smoking.Anthenelli leans towards Champix

when put on the spot as to which one isbetter.He emphasises though, that despite the

great results these medications have had,a key component in quitting is having ac-cess to counselling.Even if it is just someone who can speak

to you for a few minutes when the desireis strongest.A support structure is, therefore, vital.According to him one rarely quits “alo-

ne” without any help.Being a phychiatrist, one would assume

that Anthenelli would focus more on thephysical addiction and medication thanthe phychological aspect – such as habit.But in theGreat SouthAfrican Smoking

Survey of 2013 (when thousands of SouthAfricans were asked about smoking), thevast majority agreed that it is indeed anaddiction and not a habit.Yet, when they were asked if they would

approach anyone for helpwhen they do de-cide to quit, only 28% said they will go totheir doctor.More than 45% said they will rely on

their own will-power.Well... I am all out of will-power.Is there a doctor in the house?

Tensions are runninghigh between Joe Slo-vo Park and Phoenix residents due to a lackof housing.Thankfully threats such as “If the Joe Slo-

vo Park residents are not given permissionto erect their shacks, there would be a lotof dead people in Phoenix” have since beenreplaced with “We do not want bloodshedbut rather to live in harmony”.The situation is, however, far from being

resolved. OnMonday night this week, localward councillor JoyMcCarthymet with re-presentatives of both communities.This latest meeting was called after

weeks of growing unrest. Last week Thurs-day tensions seethed when Phoenix resi-dents held an all-night vigil to keep theirJoe Slovo Park neighbours from invadingthe land on the corner of Democracy andFreedom roads.Plots were apparently sold on this land

for between R350 to R800 and already de-marcated, according to McCarthy.A Phoenix resident who wants to remain

anonymous out of fear of retaliation sumsit up: “Residents vowed not to sleep, becau-se they feared the shacks would be builtovernight. So they made fires from thewood used to stake out plots, and kept vigilover the vacant land. It was the first timethe community came out as a united front.We chased them off the land and stoodaround for hours, drinking coffee and sha-ring each other’s despair and concern ofdropping property values and increasedcrime.”By Friday, there was no trace of the plot

demarcations but tempers were high.Says McCarthy: “I was asked to address

the Phoenix residents that evening on theopen ground, as they were concerned fortheir safety and the outcome should the

land invasion go ahead. I informed them ofthe existing City of Cape Town interdictprohibiting intimidation and further landinvasion and assured them that shouldshacks be erected, theywould be removed.”The meeting was then hijacked by some

of Joe Slovo Park’s residents.“They demandedhouses nowand alsomy

resignation, as I was a useless councillorwho did nothing for them. I explained thathousingwas anational governmentmanda-te, not local government and they shouldpe-tition national government. But the moodof the crowd was not amenable to logic orreason,” she continues.The next day there was another meeting

and that was when someone threatenedMcCarthy, saying there would be “a lot ofdead people in Phoenix” if they were not al-lowed to erect shacks.Two days later, onMonday night another

meeting was held. This time the tone was“moderate”. The meeting was chaired byElliot Jiba from the SouthAfricanNationalCivic Organisation and responded by SamMoloi for Phoenix Residents’ Association.“They were partly mollified, but then

went on to issues harking back to 2001whenthemixed-use land alongFreedomWaywassupposedly to be developed,” says McCar-thy. They claim plans had been drawn upfor flats and a budget was set aside, whichvanished and since thennothinghas happe-ned. “They were angry when I pointed outthe ANC was then in government, so theyshould ask them what happened to the mo-ney. This is the land which they now wantto occupy as they claim it actually belongsto them, but was ‘stolen’ by the municipali-ty,” she concludes.The outcome of the last meeting was that

the residents of Joe Slovo Park would staveoff land invasion as long as the executivemayor, Patricia de Lille, respond to theirgrievances within 10 working days.

This meeting will not only be importantfor the reason that there will be feedbackfromthepolice regarding crime in thearea,but the watch’s exco will also be elected.

Cape Town International Airport has se-lected Dunoon’s Inkwenkwezi SecondarySchool as one of eight schools it aims touplift.

This is part of the airport’s schoolupliftment project called “ImprovingEducation through Interactive Technolo-gy”. This year eight schools in the air-port’s vicinity benefited from theR192 200 donation with each school recei-ving an interactive whiteboard whichcan be used to access the internet whileteaching. In the past three years, 21schools have benefited with boards worthover half a million rand.

In February this year, Cape Town In-ternational Airport embarked on a driveto identify top performing schools in thecommunities around the airport. Eighttop performing schools were identified

with matric pass rates ranging from 80%to 97%. “Three of the schools were selec-ted not only for their pass rate but becau-se they had a significant pass rate increa-se in the 2013 matric results. As recogniti-on, the airport donated interactive whiteboards and other teaching software toeach of the schools,” said Deidre Davids,communications manager at Cape TownInternational Airport.

“Our business is not only about air-ports – it’s about giving back to our com-munities. So, as an airport operator, con-tributing toward the development andsustainability of our communities is veryimportant and education is the foundati-on for the development of any communi-ty,” added Davids.

Inkwekwezi achieved a pass rate of84.5%.

Blind Navigators Regularity Rallies gi-ve blind people an opportunity to com-pete in Motor Sport – a sport that you

would not normally associate with theirdisability.The SARRA/Lions Blind Navigators Re-

gularity Rally season starts on Saturdaywith the REACT Blind Navigators Rallystarting from WP Motor Club, Killarney,with the first car away on the 120km routeofwhich about 20km is on good gravel roadsat 11:00 and scheduled back at about 13:15.Regularity Rallying is held on public ro-

ads with the permission of both Nationaland Local authorities and is all about is pre-cise and accurate driving – and listening toyour navigator – it is not about speed.Competitors are set off at 2 minute inter-

vals and have to follow a set route at vary-ing set speeds. The set speeds are at least10%below the prevailing speed limit for theroad and also take into consideration theterrain andanticipated traffic conditions soas to cause as little inconvenience to otherroad users as possible.

Competing carThere are two people in the competing

car, the driver whose everyday road car itmay be, and the navigator who uses theBraille Route Schedule to give their driverinstructions on what to do at geographicalpoints and at what speed to travel. e.g. “80Restriction sign, Change Speed, speed 68”.The driver must identify the point, keep onthe set route and ensure that the set speedsare strictly adhered to.A number of controls are set up along the

route where each competitor stops andtheir time of arrival is recorded on their

score sheet. The organisers know the idealtime each competitor should be at theseControls and competitors are penalised 1point for every second early or late.The winner is the team that has the lo-

onal, SeaPoint,will provide all the competi-tors with a meal while waiting for the re-sults and prize giving.The event should be over by 16:30 to allow

everyone to get home in time to enjoy theirevening entertainment.As one of the regular blind navigators on-

ce said ”It’s quite a good feeling toknowthatas the blind navigator, you have the routeunder your fingertips.Cheryl Kruger, allocates all the naviga-
