If the watchmember had to con-tact the officer, he would haveto relay his message throughthe control room using channel2 and then have the messagesent to channel 1, phone the po-lice station and have them con-tacting the officer, or call thesector van’s cell phone numberand hope they answer. These options are undoubted-

ly more arduous and time con-suming than being instantly intouch. The member apparently felt

“unsafe andalone”while patrol-ling the streets at 02:00.Table View station command-

er, Colonel Dirk Vosloo, reiter-ated his respect for the neigh-bourhood watches in the area, but he emphasised that somecommunications should be re-served for trained responseteams.“There are more than 200

watch members who have ac-cess to Charlie Whiskey, whoare obviously wonderful re-sources to the police. But imag-ine there was a theft of a vehicleand the suspects are armedwithAK47s. We relay the info onCharlie Whiskey, which in thisexample can be accessed by allwatch members.“They are not trained to han-

dle the situation. Someone

might get shot. So, some infor-mation should clearly be re-served for neighbourhoodwatches and armed securitycompany members. If we wantthe community to get involvedwe will relay the message onchannel 2, which they all haveaccess to,” explains Vosloo.CPF chairperson, Johan van

den Bergh, highlights anotherreason for the Charlie Whiskeychannels being separated.“We are trying to fall in line

with City of Cape Town require-ments to have CCTV camerasinstalled in Table View.A steering committee for

CCTV cameraswill soon be cho-sen and it would be great if oneof our CPF members can be onthis committee. It would accel-erate the process, which is al-readywell on theway to comple-tion. In order for these camerasto be installed, the City de-mands that there is a good com-munication network. The first communication lev-

el will be reserved for the policeand then there needs to be onefor the police and armed re-sponse.“We have now created the

Charlie Whiskey channel 1 net-work, which will fall in linewith this requirement. Channel2 is for the community,”he says.

Eleven suspected poachersfled from Melkbosstrand’sbeach last week Tuesday.

Poachers slippery when wet“Six divers in wetsuits running

across the dunes towards the sea,”shouted the anxious voice over the

telephone. What had seemed like a quiet Tuesday

suddenly erupted into chaos and a day (andnight) to remember.Reacting to the call, the Melkbosstrand

Anti-Poaching Unit contacted the local poli-ce and advised them of potential abalone po-aching within the Blaauwberg Nature Re-serve just south of Melkbosstrand. It wasn’t long before police were on the

scene as were members of the anti-poachingunit, the neighbourhoodwatch, law enforce-ment and local armed response company,Avenue Response.Reacting to all this attention, the suspec-

ted poachers, who now totalled 11, abando-ned any attempt to dive and grouped toge-ther in the kelp along the rocky shoreline. This is apparently their usual tactic as it

makes it very difficult to apprehend themwithout falling on the slippery rocks andget-ting injured.Further support materialised when a

squad ofMelkbosstrand residents on jet-skisroared across the bay and helped to hem thesuspected poacherswithin a small areauntilthe Borderline police arrived from CapeTown. Unfortunately their big rubber duckwas unable to get in close enough to be effec-tive and was thus forced to bob behind thekelp and rocks.Eventually the suspected poachers, who

had huddled together on the rocks, movedback into the sea and waited for the coverof darkness. Despite the huge expenditure oftime, manpower and effort, the suspectedpo-achers managed to slip quietly away lastweek Tuesday night leaving all the variouscrime prevention agencies frustrated andempty handed. The current legislation makes it extreme-

ly difficult to both apprehend and chargethese suspected poachers unless they arephysically caught with abalone in their pos-session. So the poaching of abalone conti-nues – and the poachers get awaymore oftenthan not.Melkbosstrand Ratepayers’ Association’s

John Taylor says: “In order to become effec-tive and be able to make arrests, numerouscalls have been made for this portion of thecoastline to be included in theTable BayMa-rine Reserve as well as declaring a ban onnight-time diving within the jurisdiction ofthe City of Cape Town. The introduction ofeither (or preferably both) of these changeswould greatly assist in the fight against aba-lone poaching.”V Anyone interested in assisting or providing legal, financial or logistical support is asked to call theMelkbosstrand AntiPoaching Unit on 076 583 0270or Melkbosstrand Ratepayers’ Association on078 364 1146.

A new photographic installation by photo-grapher Stan Engelbrecht is currently ondisplay at South AfricanMarket’s (SAM) re-tail space in Bree Street. The exhibition focuses on the 2014 inaugu-

ral Tour of Arae, a six-day stage race cove-ring 666 km, ridden on vintage South Afri-can-built steel road bicycles. The installation of photographs, maps, ar-

tefacts and actual bicycles aims to demon-strate the sheer challenge of the race.According to photographer Stan Engel-

brecht, who is also the organiser and a parti-cipant in the race, the tour is based on theproud traditionof the early Italianmulti-dayraces. “The race celebrates South Africa’slittle known frame-building history, with afocus on preserving some of the beautifulframes that have been built here.”V Tour of Arae 2014 will run until 31 March at 107 BreeStreet. all over the show. It sounds silly, but it actu-ally makes the water wetter. There areabout five or six of these vehicles in the city. It’s an evil fire fighting machine. It even hasa deck gun at the top. I operate the pumpat the back and control the amount of pres-sure that my crew member or another assis-ting crew member is using. I basically sup-ply water to them and to other fire engines.Six-thousand litres might sound like a lot,but you can empty one of those tanks in justunder two minutes!”

Stott will then refill the tank with fire hy-drants, which hopefully have sufficientpressure. Stott and the crew were, of course, stationed on higher ground and quite a fewfire engines were pumping from the samesupply, so the pressure was very low.

“At one stage I thought I lost three guys...I had three guys to my far right, one guy pro-tecting the vehicle, and another to my farleft. We hoped the main bulk of the firedidn’t come towards us, but with the inten-sity of the wind it came down pretty muchon top of us. I honestly thought the threeguys standing to my right were going to betickets. There were only two or three timesin my life where I went: ‘Oh crap!’ and thiswas one of them! Luckily the three fire figh-ters came running back and the main bulkof the fire passed us.”

They never, however, give up.Stott might as well have called the coura-

geous crew together and, in true Shakespea-rian form, shout: “Once more unto the bre-ach, dear friends, once more!”

They fiercely kept at it, day and night.During the day the stifling heat suffocated

them in their suits and at night their uneasyshadows continuously flickered safely be-hind them and the fire.

They were constantly fighting to keep theproperty of strangers safe.

No time for shuteyeThere was almost no time for sleep from

Sunday to Thursday, and no time for family.“I slept about seven hours in five days,”

continues Stott. His wife, Nadene, and 16-month-old baby

boy, Colby, never saw him in that time, butthey knew he was performing a vital role inone of the biggest fires to have hit CapeTown in recent times.

The people in the street also knew how in-valuable these heroes are. Stott says peoplewere showing their support wherever theywent. “Everyone in Cape Town has beenjust so awesome! You feel like you won theRugby or Cricket World Cup. Everybody islike showing thumbs to us. There is so muchgees. It makes you feel like you are doing so-mething that makes a difference!”

As to why someone would go out of theirway to help or protect others, Stott’s answeris straight out of the book of benevolence.

“It’s in my nature... If I can help someonealong the way and make a difference in so-meone’s life – doesn’t matter how big or howsmall – then it makes me feel like a betterperson. If you need help crossing the roadI will stop and help,” he concludes.

Hopefully Stott’s exemplary enthusiasmspreads like a wild fire – or rather like awild fire with no Cape Town fire fighter insight.

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

The breeze picked up and changed direc-tion.

The fire fighters from Table Viewand Melkbosstrand were stationed at a hol-ding point next to Sandhurst Mountain Es-tate and the naval training college. Theystopped talking and cast apprehensive glan-ces to the top of the mountain.

Up until then they have been reflecting ona job well done, but the changing wind couldspell disaster.

Minutes later they would find out justhow challenging their Sunday night will be.

“All hell broke loose. The fire started torun down towards Boyes Drive,” says Mil-nerton Fire Station’s Andrew Stott (37) fromSunningdale.

“We were sitting there and then a massivefirestorm came running down on top of us.”

Stott, who mans one of the fire engines, had the perfect view of the crew ragingagainst the fire ahead of him.

Sharing water pressure“At one stage there were about six or se-

ven pumps and water tankers stationedalong the line.”

Always fighting against the intimidatingroar of the fire, Stott had to ensure that hisvehicle had enough water pressure for thecrew and, when possible, share the pressurewith the other adjacent vehicles.

“I’m the driver of a specialised 4x4 watertanker with 6 000 litres and compressed airand foam systems. It basically throws foam

When Edna MacKay (86) realised herdarling dog, Peppie, was in her carwhen it was stolen on Sunday, she

collapsed and was taken to hospital for anassessment.

Ethel has since been released, but her sonRory is fearful that this latest incident couldbe the end of her.TygerBurger reported on Edna in the arti-

cle “Hit and run eyewitness sought”.She was walking her scruffy-looking

mixed breed near Boy de Goede Circle in Au-gust last year when a vehicle hit her.

On Sunday her car was stolen just before11:00 in the parking lot of a Pick n Pay inBlaauwberg Road.

According to her son she quickly went in-to the store and when she came back shefound that her Toyota sedan was missing.

“She doesn’t even care about the car,” saysRory.

“She just wants her baby back.”Peppie is about nine years old and has

been a shining light in Edna’s autumnyears. “She was completely devastated, collapsed, taken to hospital and was puton medication. Today (Monday) she isvery depressed,” continues Rory.

Rory was phoned shortly after his moth-er’s car was stolen and proceeded tosearch the area.

He was hopeful that the thief/thievesnoticed the dog and released her, but hecould not find the one thing that wouldmake the world of difference to his mom.

“One day my dad went to a vlei and hisdog went missing. He called him, but thedog was nowhere to be found. When he ar-rived back home he saw his dog was wait-ing for him. Dogs have a sense of directionand always want to go back home, but Pep-pie is old and very frightened. She needsconstant care,” he continues.

“Peppie loves sitting on her back legsand beg for little treats...”

Her general timidness, according toRory, would have meant that she wouldimmediately have hidden behind the backseat of the car and perhaps gone unnoticed

for the criminal/s.Rory says he enquired with the shopping

centre and there is no video footage of the inci-dent.

Her has also shot down the Facebook report

that the vehicle has since been discoveredin Dunoon.V If anyone has seen Peppie they can contact Roryon 083 700 6060 or Cheryllyn Potgieter on082 770 2667.

Jazz and classical tunes on the menu

The Parklands College Jazz Band formed inmid-2014 and have made fast progress in es-tablishing themselves as a band to take noteof in the West Coast and Cape Town commu-nity.

After their first album recording at theend of 2014 the band have managed to per-form at various public and school functionsand will embark on an eight-day tour up theGarden Route in April.

Last week saw the band perform at theannual V&A Waterfront Band Slam Compe-tition held the V&A Waterfront Amphithea-tre.

Just a few days before that the band live-ned up a group of enthusiastic listeners atthe Riverglade Retirement Centre. Playing

at retirement villages and old age homes isjust one of the ways the band is giving backto their community.

“Many of the students’ grandparents aremusicians themselves and helped edge thestudents on to the instruments that theynow play in the band,” says conductor, De-an Flanagan.

“In many ways this is our way of payingit back”.

Look out for the band playing in yourarea or visit www.soundcloud.com/par-klands-jazz-band to listen to some of theirrecordings.

To book the band for a performance, con-tact Dean Flanagan on 082 307 9252 or [email protected].

Take note of this jazz band

The members of the band are (back from left) Thebe Moloko (bass guitar), Sung Jun Bok(piano), Thandi Colley (vocals) and Joe Clews (drums); and in the front are Paulo de Abreu(vocals), Lindsay Friday (flute), Shaun Oberholzer (saxophone) and Gareth Graham (guitar).

With the 18th MAC 24-Hour Challenge(sponsored by Vascos Taverna) just aroundthe corner, the organisers have touched onthe history of this famous event.

Milnerton Aquatic Club’s Pat Downingelaborates: “Way back in 1983 there was ayoung man named James Tutton, who wasso enthusiastic about sailing that togetherwith the help of Don Gay and his fellow clubmembers of the Zwartkops Yacht Club, Eas-tern Cape, sailed his Laser dinghy non-stopfor 24 hours in rain and winds of 15 to 20knots. This was the first time that anyonein the country had attempted this type ofendurance race. Unfortunately for James, his sailing feat went unnoticed and was the-refore not recognised as any type of achie-vement in dinghy sailing.

“Then in 1984, a 16-year-old MilnertonHigh School pupil and 1st Milnerton SeaScout, Ian Downing, sailed his Laser non-stop around Rietvlei for 29 hours 38 minu-tes and 10 seconds. He did 156 laps and a to-tal of 180.8116 miles!”

Then in 1998 another enthusiastic sailor,Mark Algra, decided to organise an endu-

rance race based on James and Ian’s achie-vements, and such the MAC24 was born.

“This sailing challenge, being a uniqueevent in the country, is aimed at the encou-ragement of sailing among the youth, deve-lopment teams as well as experienced sai-lors, who showcase sailing to the whole ofSouth Africa, as being a fun sport for peoplefrom all walks of life, young or old. Thethrills and spills of sailing also make forgood spectator viewing. Sailing is charac-ter building and teaches the youth about ca-maraderie, tenacity and staying the cour-se,” continues Downing.

This unique dinghy sailing challenge isan endurance, distance race to establishhow many kilometres a crew sailing a ding-hy can cover within 24 hours, sailing non-stop. A team consists of six or eight crewmembers, of which one is the team leader. They sail two up at a time and alternate.

The challenge will be held this weekend(14 to 15 March) at Rietvlei. The welcomeceremony will be held on Friday at 18:30.V For more information go to www.milnertonaquaticclub.co.za.

Yes, there are negativemessages or stories too, butthere are many that balancethem with more happy ones.Like the story about thequadraplegic centre receivingnew cutlery and crockery fromthe Inner Wheel, the storyabout the car guard fromCongo, Tamia Kock receiving agift of a brand new piano, toysand gifts for the children atDurbanville children’s home, etc. Thank you TygerBurger! Also something I love is the

The SA government is againwasting our tax funds, thistime by holding the “PortfolioCommittee on Police in Part-nership with the CivilianSecretariat for Police FirearmsSummit”, from March 24 tot 25.According to Jeff Radebe

“the main objective is toensure that we reduce theownership of arms in SouthAfrica”.The latest figures released by

non-natural deaths, and roughly0,01734% of all deaths national-ly.More interesting is that of

these assault related deaths, thetop cause at 85,1% is “sharpobject related”.It would appear that a “Police

Sharp Object Summit” would beof far greater benefit to allSouth Africans.A “firearm control system”

initially costing R42 million hasturned into around R412million. With possibly billionsof more taxpayer Rands beingsquandered on a law thatclearly has done nothing tocurb crime, but has disarmedlaw abiding citizens, one wouldthink that the Civilian Secreta-riat for Police should conductan audit of the FirearmsControl Act immediately.Scrap the summit!

LEWENSKIEKIE

Gaan Proteasons verras ofweer ‘choke’?Die Proteas se krieketspan word al lankalge-etiketteer as ’n choker-span.

In the townships, people believe that dogs have aworm under their tongue – andin one case “the worm” wasremoved by cutting it out whilethe dog was still alive. Ignoran-ce is the biggest enemy ofanimals, domestic or otherwise.Teach your children to treatanimals with love and respect, because children follow byexample.

album in Nashville self opneem.”

Bespreek by 082 074 1269 of events@venuedaria.co.za.

With the powerful Masters V8s, Clas-sic Cars and Fine Cars all due tomake their first appearance during

the second round of the popular Power Se-ries sponsored by Wingfield Motors at Kil-larney on Saturday, local fans will get a bet-ter indication of what is going to be availa-ble to them this season.Despite that, it’s the start of the first BoldMarine GTi Challenge race that is likely tograb the greatest initial attention. Themay-hem that occurred after the multiple colli-sion when the lights changed for the sameevent last month, has seldom been equaledat Killarney. So much so that racing onlyproceeded in an orderly fashion at the thirdattempt.Drivers who avoided the worst of the cha-os that day and are likely to shine again onSaturday include Shane and Nian du Toit,Bessie Bester and the promising youngMarcoBusi. Behind them, reigning champi-on Paul Simon claimed the class C honoursas he set about retaining his title. In the Masters events, dominant Silver

class drivers Franco Donadio and Britishace StephenYounghave been promoted andcould cause anewproblem for formerSouthAfrican Superkart champion and multipleMasters titleholderMarcel Angel, in the de-fense of his gold class award.Others worth considering here includethe versatile Craig Jarvis, Charles Artonand former Supercar champion RichardSchreuder.Away from the leaders, the progress of de-velopment rookies Ashraf Fredericks anddemure lady driver Nashrene Schloss is go-ing to be monitored with interest in theMakita Formula Supercar class. Fredericksdid well to claim the bronze award duringthe first roundwhile Schloss was not far be-hind him.Expect a genuine German blitzkrieg inthe Midas Clubman events where the sur-prisingly quick Volksies of Clint Rennardand Jesse Huggett are facing up to AndreJohnson’s Audi turbo and a panzer divisionof Beemers in the hands of GavinCerff, dan-gerous Danie van Niekerk and Nieyaaz Mo-dack (if he enters on time).A similar situationexists in classBwhere

Alex Johnson’s Audi Quattro is surely go-ing to be challenged by Mansoor Parker inhis BMW 325.TheMutlu Batteries Classic Cars are alsomaking their first appearance. Here it is go-ing to be Anton Rollino in his powerful V8Chev CanAm who will have to fend of theattention he is likely to receive from Rich-ard “Quick” Quixley (Datsun 240Z) andTrevor Momberg (V6 Ford Capri). The Fine Cars, that enjoy a family rela-tionship with the Classics, have attractedtheir usual rich variety of entries. These in-clude Clive Spolander’s Jaguar XJS, threeMGAsandaMGBand sixPorsches. Switch-ing from cars to drivers, spectators will bewell advised towatchhowwell the physical-ly impaired Steve Hallett controls histwitchy Ford Sapphire.Gates open at 07:00 with the first of the 18races on the program due to start after thefinal practce and qualifying sessions at09:45.Admission is R60 for adults and R20 forscholars under 16.
