“Eers wanneer die munisipaliteit dié pro-bleem as ’n ramp bevestig, kan die rampfond-se wat tans broodnodig is, bekom word omdie vrot rioolpyplyn uit Motherwell na dierioolwerke by Fishwater Flats te vervang,”het dr. Nadine Strydom, mariene bioloog aandie Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Univer-siteit (NMMU), gesê.

Met ’n meer onlangse besoek was die reukvan riool om die Swartkopsrivier, ligweg ge-stel, walglik.

Terwyl dit voel of die stank ’n mens se keelmet elke asemteug laat brand, is dit die inwo-ners van Aloes, ’n woonbuurt langs diérivier, wat die ergste geraak word.

“Ons bly nou al só vir meer as drie maande.Die kinders word uit die water gehou, maarsteeds kry hulle erge maagwerkings, velpro-bleme en kopsere,” het Caitlint Leander, ’ninwoner, gesê.

Jenny Rump, omgewingsbeampte van dieZwartkops-bewarea, sê baie van die Aloes-in-woners is tans weens maagprobleme platge-trek en baie swak.

“Hulle kan nie vir mediese hulp ver stapnie.”

Sy het ’n versoek aan die munisipaliteit ge-rig om mediese hulp aan die inwoners testuur.

“Maar hulle (munisipaliteit) het gesê hullesien nie die noodsaak om mediese bystand teverskaf nie.

“Die inwoners kon volgens hulle hul maag-probleme ook deur ander faktore soos besmet-te melk of kos opgedoen het.”

Mthubanzi Mniki, ’n munisipale woord-voerder, het by navrae oor dié voorval nie opdie vraag gereageer nie.

Mniki het wel gesê dit blyk dat ’n verstoptepyplyn by Fishwater Flats, wat gevolglik dierioolwater laat terugstoot en ander pype laatbars, die probleem is.

Die korttermynplan, volgens Mniki, is omeers die verstopte pyp skoon te maak.

“Die langtermynplan is om planne vir dieherstel van die hele rioolpyplyn te maak.”

One of a kind. That is the former Swifts RugbyClub from Uitenhage, as it most probably isthe only rugby club in South Africa whichwas founded by a reverend.

In celebration of the club’s rich history amemorial service and reunion will be held inUitenhage on February 1st.The club’s history dates back to 1890 when

Reverend Charles Bloomer Jecks of St Katha-rine’s Anglican Church inUitenhage selected

a team of youngsters from the church choirand entered them in the local junior rugbyleague. At first theywere called the StKather-ine’s Choir rugby team, but during 1891 theSwifts Rugby Football Club was established.By 1894 they joined the Eastern Province

Rugby Union and during 1896 the club deliv-ered its first Springbok player, F.R.Myburgh.During 1906 all five teams of Swifts were topon their respective leagues in theGrandChal-lenge finals.According to Cicil Hayward, convenor of

the Swifts memorial service and reunion,

there are still several former Swifts clubmembers in the Uitenhage, Jeffreys Bay andPort Elizabeth areas.“Last year’s memorial service at St Kather-

ine’sChurchwaspacked. Itwas a joyous occa-sion as some of the members have not seenone another in years,” said Hayward.“The bring-and-braai afterwards, held at

the Uitenhage Cricket Club through the shar-ing of good old memories brought many asparkle to the eyes of Swifts rugby players.”The annual Swifts Rugby Club memorial

service will be held on Sunday, February 1st

at 11:00, St Katharines Anglican Church inMarket Street, Uitenhage. Afterwards therewill be a gathering for tea at the parish hall.Following these proceedings, fires will be

lit at the Uitenhage Cricket Club (oppositeUitenhage Indoor Sports Centre) for a bring-and-braai and reunion.All interested are most welcome to attend

voor die dorp se sportgronde skoon te maak.Dit is ’n seer oog en instandhouding word niena wense gedoen nie.

“Ons gaan almal ons atletiekfrokkies aan-trek en die gras sny, bossies uittrek, papiereen bottels optel en skoonmaak. Wanneer onsoefen hardloop ons daar verby en dit is regtig‘n seer oog,” sê Yvette Jonker van die Des-patch Atletiekklub.

Die atlete gaan Saterdagoggend vanaf 08:00daar bedrywig wees en inwoners van Des-patch en belangstellendes is welkom om ’n

ingtheAirportsCompanyofSA(ACSA) attended the hearing.Many stakeholders who are ob-jecting to the development tookthe floor to address their con-cerns of the impending fishfarm.Shirley Parker-Nance a ma-

rine biologist from Pro-Divewho is heading the “Stop PEFish Farm” campaign said theDepartment of Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF)together with DEA agreed tosend the Responses to the Ap-peals to the relevant stakehold-ers by yesterday.The stakeholders would then

be able to respond within 30

days with objections.Parker-Nance said the loca-

tionand impactwasquestionedby the different environmental-ists and stakeholders involvedand DAFF and DEA made acommitment to consider theirinput.“The EIA clearly states that

this was not the right locationfor the fish farm and they needto be accountable for that.“This clearlywill haveaneg-

ative impact on many of thecity’s businesses. AirportsCompany South Africa (ACSA)also coming into the play sup-porting the petition will cer-tainly help us in our cam-paign.”According to Parker-Nance,

ACSA have recently joined thestakeholders from the NelsonMandela Bay objecting to theDEA authorised project.Theyareconcernedaboutthe

increase in the number of birdsthe development will attractnear the Port Elizabeth Air-ports landing strip.According to the EIA for the

Algoa Bay Sea Based Aquacul-ture Development Zone, by theAquaculture Animal Healthand Environmental Interac-tions within the Department ofAgriculture, Forestry andFish-eries (DAFF), four sites wereconsidered for the project withthreesites inAlgoaBayandonesite in St Francis Bay.

a gala event held at the Superspar DespatchCricket Club.

“It really is a cricket academywith a differ-

ence approach,” said James Oosthuizen,president of the Superspar DespatchCricket Club.According toNigel Brouwers, the cricket

school caters for both boys as well as girls.“We also do video analyzing and teach

the kids life and cricket skills to equipthem in becoming complete cricketers,”

said Brouwers.The Nigel Brouwers Cricket School of Excel-
