Of the three sites in Algoa Bay, the site that ranked most favourably from an industry per- spective (Algoa 1, due to its proximity to PE Har- bour), scored poorly in respect of potential con- flicts with other users mainly the commercial squid fishing and shipping. DAFF said the Algoa 2 and 3 have been considered less favourable from an industry perspective but potential for conflict with other users is much lower. Airport joins fish farm saga

THE Fairview Sports and Family Centre’sfirst phase of development has commencedand is set to be completed in March thisyear.

The phase to be completed includesclearing the site of alien vegetation, level-ling the site, grassing, fencing and the in-stallation of certain engineering services. The cost for the first phase is estimated tobe around R8.5 million.

The sports and family centre which isone of the legacy projects emanating fromthe land restitution programme imple-mented by PELRHA, was identified at thetown-planning stage, as the greater Fair-view area had no provision for sport andrecreation facilities. There are 16 hectaresof land provided for sport and recreationpurposes in Fairview.

Since PELRHA encountered severalchallenges with respect to settling the landclaims, the social and community develop-ment projects were kept on the back burn-er. “The planning work for the sports fieldstarted two years ago,” said Clive Felix ofPELRHA.

One of PELRHA’s secondary mandatesis of a social and community developmentnature. This mandate is funded fromfunds that PELRHA generated throughcreating a business node along the Willi-am Moffett Expressway and selling thisland in a public tender process.

“When the settlement was negotiatedwith the State, this opportunity was iden-tified. The State agreed that any funds gen-erated through this means be used to offsetany escalating costs on the Fairview andSalisbury Park developments and that the

balance of the funds be used toprovide social infrastructureand to initiate other communi-ty development projects,” saidFelix

The facility will have an in-door sports and communitycentre with sports fields cater-ing for team sports. The con-cept designs for the sports andcommunity centre have beendone and once the workingdrawings are completed andthe plans have municipal ap-proval, it will go out to tenderin the next two to threemonths.

“Depending on the costs, theentire centre may be built.Should the costs be too high, thecentre will be built in phases. TheFairview Sports Trust will thenhave to raise sponsorships tocomplete the project,” said Felix.

The facility will be availableprimarily for the community andthe schools in the wider Fairviewarea. It will also be available tosporting codes throughout PortElizabeth. “The Trust is busy de-veloping a usage policy andwants to ensure that the facilitywill be affordable for all,” saidFelix.

LAST week the academic year kicked offin the Eastern Cape, and while mostlearners were excited about the newschool year, the reality is that some haveto go to school hungry.

Research has shown that cognitive de-velopment is difficult when learning onan empty stomach. With one in five South African children

going to school hungry, the Departmentof Basic Education is now working withlocal foodmanufacturer, Kellogg’s, on theKellogg’s Breakfast for Better Days™ Ini-tiative to ensure learners start the schoolday with a full tummy. The national programmewas piloted in

2014 and served breakfasts to 25 000learners every school day: a total of fivemillion over the course of the year. Byyear end, school principals in participat-ing schools reported increased attend-ance, better concentration, a decrease inaggressive behaviour and improved passrates linked to learners starting theirdays with full tummies.“South Africa’s future is in the hands of

today’s children, many of whom are com-promised by hunger,” says Jack Kruger,

Kellogg’s Marketing Category Manager.“The foundation phase is where formal

learning begins, and if we can assist edu-cators by providing children with the en-ergy they require to learn, concentrate, socialise and make the best of these criti-cal years, we know we are doing some-thing extremely valuable for our coun-try.”Partnering with Kellogg’s again is

FoodBank South Africa, who will distrib-ute the food. FoodBankSouthAfrica is thecountry’s largest food banking networkandKellogg’s international partner in thefood company’s global Breakfast for Bet-ter Days™ Initiative.“The input from schools about the posi-

tive changes they have seen in the class-room and on the playground is beyondgratifying, and has strengthened Kel-logg’s resolve to be a partner to educationin South Africa in the way it is bestequipped to do so: by providing nutrient-rich breakfasts to young learners,” addedKruger.Schools in theNelsonMandelaBay area

“Marriage is not easy and it deserves hard work; thesame effort you put into your job, should be invested inyour husband. Sometimes even more,” said 71-year-oldSannie.

She said while she loved Etheridge immensely, themarriage would not have worked had they not communi-cated and respected each other over the years.

“We did everything together. I loved to host socialswith his colleagues and partners and through that, Ilearned new things about my Etheridge and that mademe admire and appreciate him more.”

Etheridge said what he loved most about Sannie washer dedication to her family. “In those days, theman hadto work and be the provider. I appreciated and loved see-ing her dedication to her work as a mother and wife andthat made me love her more, even til this day.”

With three children, twograndchildren and a life filledwith memories, the Ochses saidwhat has kept them groundedand in love has been the respectand communication they havehad to work on over the years.

LIZEKA TANDWA

RED roses, balloons and romance signify themonthof love and no one will be embracing this monthmore than the Ochses, as this year marks theirgolden anniversary.

February 14, has never lost its novelty to Ethe-ridge and Sannie Ochse who for over 50 yearshave stayed true to their vows to love, honourand cherish each other as they did when theyfirst started their incredible journey together.

Listening to the Ochses relay their 50-yearlove story, one can tell their deep admirationand respect for each other. Their quirky, candidhumour connects the couple in a way only they can un-derstand.

The couple, who live in Glenroy Park, met in 1962through mutual family friends. “He was with his girl-friend but I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He was a talland handsome man but nothing materialised.

“After some time, whenhewas single, our friends orga-nised a blind date for us and we were from that moment, inseparable,” said Sannie.

After a two-year romance, the couple wed and a yearlater their eldest daughter was born.

“In those days the natural progression of any relation-ship was marriage and children. I think that is the prob-lem today; marriage is not valued by the youth. All theycare about is how big the ring is and the wedding. Loveisn’t appreciated - it’s tarnished,” added Sannie.

A man of few words, Etheridge said while he could notremember how he proposed he would make the love ofhis life feel special this year.

“What makes me happy is that we will be celebratingour anniversarywithmy sonwhomarried five years agoon the same day (April 17) to honour our love. It makesthis day far more special to know that we have inspiredour kids and led by example,” said Etheridge.

FNB NMMU-Madibaz rugby fans can book aringside seat for their team’s 2015 FNB Var-sity Cup campaign following the announce-ment of a new season ticket package.

The nine-week tournament, which is pre-sented by Steinhoff International, starts onFebruary 9, and will see the Madibaz pitthemselves against the top tertiary teamscountrywide.Season ticket holders will receive en-

trance to all four of the Port Elizabeth teams’home games, plus bonus tickets shouldNMMU’sVarsityCupandYoungGuns teamsgo through to the play-offs and finals.Ticket holders will also be entitled to re-

served parking at the Madibaz Stadium onthe NMMU South Campus and receive abranded Varsity Cup supporters’ T-shirt orvest, with access to vendor services in themain pavilion.According to NMMU deputy director of

sport, Petrus Boukes, the university havemade a limited run of 1 000 season ticketsavailable.Boukes said fans could look forward to top-

class student rugby on a par with provincialcompetition.“All eight teams want to win the Cup. For

the past two years, we have lost the semi-fi-nal by a single point and we need to improveon that if we want to show progress.“Last year, a penalty by Pukke in the last

90 seconds deprived us of the opportunity tohost the final here in PE.”He said the Madibaz were in a rebuilding

phase, after losing a number of front rowstalwarts like captain Roy Godfrey and Tim-

othy Agaba.“But we have a number of exciting young

players and our coaching staff is confidentthat we will be more than competitive.”Former vice-captain and fullback, Jarryd

Buys, who has represented both the Leop-ards andSWDEagles’ CurrieCup teams, willlead the young squad.Boukes said Varsity Cup’s success was

built on the twin pillars of winning rugbyand the “sportainment” concept made popu-lar by American college football.“We have lots of activations on the night,

like the Dare to Dive and kicking for cashcompetitions, and our cheerleading squadand mascot Diba to entertain the crowds.“We’d also like to get our own brass band

in action at the events.”He said an Alumni Golf Day had been

planned to coincidewith the first home gameagainst CUT on February 16.“Our alumni are an important component

of our local support base. Besides the seasonticket packages, we also invite approximate-ly 80 former students to join us in the Invest-ec Alumni Legacy Suite as special guests onthe night.”He said funds thus raisedwould be allocat-

ed towards the construction of a dedicatedrugby clubhouse, which would contribute toraising the profile and performance of theclub.“The Madibaz need a permanent, dedicat-

ed ‘home’ to build and enhance their cohe-sion and camaraderie. This is an often-over-looked element of team performance.“Sports psychological intervention before

competition needs to happen in an environ-ment of belonging to gain maximum benefit. Our aim is to create a ‘home from home’ ef-

fect in the stadium, where they prepare andplay.”Spectators’ R10 entrance fee to the beer

garden would also be added to the buildingfund, he said. The CUT game kicks off at 4.45pm. This

will be followed by clashes with UJ (March2), Shimlas (March 9) and Tuks (March 23).The season ticket costs R200 per person. To
