The University of Bari, in its aim to promotethe full participation of all differently-abled

students in its didactic, training and relational activities, instituted the Differ-ently-Abled Student Services in 2000. It is staffed by the administrative per-sonnel, and serves as a counselling centre to:

allow these students full access to the universityensure their complete integration in university lifesupply them, and their families, with support and information for the reso-lution of any problems.

In enforcement of Law no. 17/99 in favour of differently-abled students, thefollowing services are offered:

didactic and specialised tutoringinterpreting for the hearing impairedaids for dyslexiatransportation and assistancetechnological aidsmonitoring of architectural barrierstreatment of didactic materialscounselling.

Additionally, the University of Bari has signed a programme agreement withthe Italian Paralympic Committee, which includes, among other activities, col-laboration in the project “Motor Activities for Differently-Abled Students”launched by the Motor and Sport Sciences degree course.

The University of Bari supports relationshipswith the world of work through pre- and post-

graduate internships handled by its University Internship Service.This service:

provides orientation activities for students, recent graduates and local, na-tional and international companies, for the formalisation of agreements fortraining and orientation internships, so as to favour the alternation of peri-ods of study and work as part of the learning process and to assist in choos-ing a profession through direct contact with the world of work;coordinates activities of didactic management;is responsible for the formalisation of collaboration agreements and otheraccords regarding didactics and training drawn up with public and privateagencies;supplies professors and university structures legal administrative coun-selling, administrative support and collaboration, for the promotion andconsolidation of relationships with public and private bodies on the local,national and international level, pertaining to didactics and training.

course offerings, orientation, services, opportunities, regulations, formsand much more;Studenti@Uniba notice board: located on the home page, the noticeboard displays all notices and news for students;student e-mail: upon enrolment students are assigned a username andpassword to access a personal e-mail address on the unibari.net domain;on line office: students can consult the data relative to their university ca-reer and enrol, make payments and deal with administrative paperworkvia web. An on-line service offers assistance in resolving access problems.Additionally, it is possible to access services offered by Almalaurea;wireless: a Wi-Fi network allows students to connect to high-speed Inter-net with their own pc, palm pc or smartphone. The connection is availableto students with access credentials (username e password) in areas cov-ered by the signal;recruitment area: this section includes test announcements, schedules,rankings and all information relative to limited enrolment degree courses.

In 2008, the University of Bari obtained 1stclass accreditation in the Regional Registry

of Civil Service. The national public competition, issued 22 June 2009 by theOffice of the Prime Minister – National Office of Civil Service, approved twoprojects presented by the University of Bari:

the “Athena” project, which aims to increase and improve the usability ofservices offered by the university libraries and museums, for a total of 31volunteers;the “Asclepius” project, which aims to guarantee full social integrationand to break down the barriers to learning for differently-abled studentsthrough the availability of special services and the involvement of ade-quately trained personnel, for a total of 9 volunteers.

Volunteers work 30 hours per week, for a total of 1400 hours yearly, and re-ceive a salary of €433.89 per month from the National Office of Civil Serv-ice. For 2010, the University of Bari has confirmed its request for 1st classaccreditation in the Regional Registry, and plans to present new projects,including one for civil service abroad.

SeCops is a service that the University of Barihas dedicated to students to meet their

needs for psychological support. Interested students can request a psycho-logical-clinical consultation, and participate in a series of weekly individualand group sessions with an assigned psychologist. The service works as fol-lows:

appointments requested by e-mail: [email protected] of requests, at the office, open Tuesday and Thursday from11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Via G. Petroni, 15/F (7th floor) - Bari, tel./fax080.5561228counselling: conducted by psychologists who have all undergone the sametraining and practice psychodynamic psychotherapy.

The Student Counselling Centre is where stu-dents can report any difficulties they are ex-

periencing in their relationship with university teaching or administrative per-sonnel, which are serious enough to create problems in the student’s normalcourse of university study. This centre operates in collaboration with the Stu-dent Rights Ombudsman, the Committee for Equal Opportunities and the Psy-chological Counselling Service.

The Student Rights Ombudsman was insti-tuted to safeguard and guarantee student

rights which are felt to have been prejudiced by abuse, disservice or delaysimputable to actions, or behaviours, even of omission, by university bodiesand offices. In such cases, the Student Council or single students can turn tothe Student Rights Ombudsman, who, in conformity with the law in force, willexpress an opinion and, if necessary, intervene by making a report to the ap-propriate bodies.

The European Union promotes and finances,with supplementary subsidies, a series of co-

operation and exchange programmes between universities. These pro-grammes encourage the international mobility of university students and pro-vide scholarships and guarantee recognition of the credits accumulated dur-ing the period of study abroad. The University of Bari currently participates inthe Lifelong Learning/Erasmus and Leonardo da Vinci programmes and Pro-gramma Tempus, and offers further supplementary subsidies for its students.Additionally, collaboration agreements have been signed with numerous Eu-ropean and non-European universities (France, Argentina, Albania, Serbia,Montenegro, Greece, etc.).

To improve the quality of life of its studentpopulation, the University of Bari has made

special agreements with agencies and institutions in the area for:the reduction of the cost of monthly passes on all city public transport lines;the use of a showcard which enables its holder to access all cinemas in Bari,Brindisi and Taranto and the cities of the holder’s home province for only€2;the use of a Cine Student Card to access the multiplex cinemas of Molfettaand Andria (BA) for only €2;free entrance to the performances scheduled for the concert season by theCamerata Musicale Barese.

The University Sport Centre boosts universi-ty sport policy within the framework of the

overall development of the student. The centre, in addition to the manage-ment and maintenance of sports structures, promotes various levels of cours-es in a wide variety of disciplines and participates in competitive universityand federal sports events.

The centre offers:free use structures: indoor pool, outdoor pool, indoor sports arena andskating rink, and an athletics ground. It is not necessary to make reserva-tions to use the swimming pools;fee-paying structures: tennis court, 5-a-side football field;beginning to advanced level sport courses: athletics, canoe, rowing, karate,swimming, basketball, volleyball, skating, tennis, triathlon and ultimatefrisbee. University students pay a reduced fee for these courses.

University activities: annual inter-college tournaments in the following disci-plines: athletics, canoe, rowing, karate, swimming, basketball, volleyball,skating, tennis, triathlon and ultimate frisbee. Students with a particular tal-ent in the aforementioned sports can participate as representatives of theC.U.S., and upon the decision of the centre’s technicians, in the National Uni-versity Championships (C.N.U.) organised annually by the Italian UniversitySport Centre (C.U.S.I.).Federal activities: students who demonstrate, upon the decision of the cen-tre’s technicians, the necessary level of ability and commitment can partici-pate, at their own expense, in the competitive activity organised by the Na-tional Federations under the auspices of C.O.N.I. which the C.U.S. is affiliatedwith: athletics, canoe, rowing, karate, Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling,swimming, basketball, skating and triathlon.

The Harmonia Association, the University ofBari’s chorus and orchestra, officially formed

in 1989, carries out an intense musical schedule within the university and inthe local community. The association’s main interest is the encouragement ofmusical and choral practice among the young and, in particular, among uni-versity students, through the work performed by instrumental and vocalgroups which have promoted an increasing awareness of profoundly educa-tional forms on the human and cultural level. The association has also had im-portant exchanges with other musical and university groups abroad (in 2009:San Petersburg, Warsaw, Paris). The association is composed of the following groups:

The centre has the following aims:promotion, development and propulga-

The University Language Centre (CLA) is a“virtual community,” with the primary objec-

tive of teaching linguistic communication with other world citizens, as well aspreparing its students to enter the local, national and European workforce. Itis composed of a central centre, located at the College of Foreign Languagesand Literatures, and five independent centres with on-line networking. Eachlaboratory has a modular system for the organisation of lessons and re-sources (satellite TV channels, DVD player, CD audio player, audio cassetteplayer, etc.) and full access to all the material and infinite resources availableon Internet.CLA activities include:a) language teachingb) multimedia didactic trainingc) information technology language trainingd) basic information technology training.The CLA is an official Cambridge ESOL Examinations centre offering interna-tional language certification.

The University of Bari has its own “UniversityLibrary System,” divided into four broad sci-

entific-disciplinary areas: biomedicine, legal-economic, scientific-technolog-ical, and humanistic. The goal of these areas is to coordinate the developmentand organisation of all the librarianship functions, as well as the developmentof library services for the treatment and proliferation of bibliographic informa-tion.The University of Bari currently has:

The library assets are catalogued in card indexes located in the various li-braries, while 30% of the material is available on the university’s electroniccatalogue, OPAC (OPen Access Catalogue). A wide range of structures dedicated prima-rily to museum activities and the prolifera-

tion of scientific information is available to the university community. Theseinclude:the Interdepartmental Service Centre for Scientific Museology (CISMUS)links the university to the outside community in the coordination of all sci-entific museology activities and organises, upon request from the afferentstructures, a programme of practical/didactic initiatives and guided tours(c/o University Campus, info©cismus.uniba.it)the Museum of Zoology contains almost a thousand zoological exhibits ofApulian, Italian and north-east African marine and land fauna (c/o Universi-ty Campus)the Museum of Earth Sciences has collections of Apulian fossils, rocks andminerals, as well as important historical geological maps (c/o UniversityCampus)the Botanical Gardens contains 800 plaint species from around the world,a herbarium with 40,000 samples and a Seed Bank that preserves over 2million seeds, particularly plant species that risk extinction (c/o UniversityCampus)the Commodities Museum gathers and stores sample of raw materials,goods, yarns, food products and equipment of interest in the field of com-modities (c/o College of Economics)the Mediterranean Citadel of Science brings together and organises themuseum patrimony related to the development of the sciences present inthe University of Bari and throughout Apulia. It is divided into three themebased areas: appearance and reality; water; images, light and colours.These areas host interactive exhibits and multimedia products (www.cit-tadellamediterraneascienza.uniba.it).

The Ministry for Youth Policies and Sportsand the Italian Banking Association, in col-

laboration with the Minister of Reforms and Innovation in Public Administra-tion and the Ministry of the University and Research, promote an initiative forthe economic support of students enrolled in all levels of university studywhich offers one or more loans of up to €6,000 without other forms of guar-antee. The student, after having looked over all of the conditions indicated onthe official site www.diamoglicredito.it, should check his qualificationsagainst those indicated in the section relative to the types of funding andpresent the fully completed application form, with a photocopy of an ID andhis fiscal code, to the main office of his college.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION / Bari and BrindisiProfessional opportunities: graduates can carry out administrational and mana-gerial roles in for-profit and non-profit companies, banks and insurance agencies,and in civil service. HERBAL TECHNIQUES (TE) Professional opportunities: graduates are qualified to carry out professionalactivities related to the production, transformation and packaging of plant me-dicines, parts and derivatives with nutritional health and cosmetic value, gua-ranteeing quality as per the laws in force. They can work in: herbalist’s shopsand chemist’s shops that sell over-the-counter medicines; companies that pro-duce, distribute and import medicinal plants; companies and laboratories thatextract, transform and inspect raw plant materials; food and cosmetic facto-ries that use raw plant materials; pharmaceutical companies that produce her-bal products, homeopathic products and dietary supplements made with me-dicinal plants; sectors that promote and publicise products made with rawplant materials; public and private structures that operate in the field of infor-mation regarding products made with plant matter. These are only a few of the activities coordinated by the afo-rementioned law; the course of study may also take into consideration otherprofessions carried out by the European Union in the field of pharmaceuticals,so as to create equal occupational opportunities throughout Europe. BIOTECHNOLOGIES FOR PROCESS AND PRODUCT INNOVATION (limited enrol-ment course)Professional opportunities: graduates can work in biotechnology spheres relative toprocess and product innovation in the industrial and agro-food sectors which use con-ceptual and technical-experimental tools to analyse and utilise, even by modifyingthem, cells or their components so as to obtain goods and services. These activitiesare based on in-depth knowledge of the structure and function of biological systems,studying their molecular, informational and supplementary patterns. The course is di-vided into two curricula, Industrial and Agro-food, in which the basic studies are sup-plemented with applicative notions regarding genetic engineering, fermentative pro-cesses in the industrial and food sectors, molecular diagnostics as well as quality con-trol, biomaterials, nano-technologies (Industrial curriculum) and the genetic improve-ment of plant and animals species (agro-food curriculum).
