Grades K-1 Week 1

Get Their Attention (5 min)

INTRODUCE yourself and welcome the group to our series, Heroes and Villains! Explain the daily objective.

ALLOW kids to introduce themselves and ANSWER the following:

TEACH kids that superheroes use their power to protect others, but we can rely on God’s power to help us protect others from harm. Repeat what we need to know today: God’s Power In Me Helps Me Protect Others! ______________________________________________________________________________________

Make It Matter (15 min)

TELL kids there is a woman in the Bible who relied on God’s power in her to protect two men from harm.

DISCUSS the following questions:

CONNECT the Bible Story to what we’re learning today:

1. What city did Joshua send two spies to? (Jericho)

2. Whose house did the spies spent the night at in Jericho? (The spies spent the night at Rahab’s house)

3. Where did Rahab hide the spies in her house? (On top of her roof)

4. What did the two spies promise Rahab they would do for helping them? (The spies promised Rahab they would help her and her family when Jericho was captured)

5. Where did Rahab tell the spies to hide? (She told them to hide in the hills)

6. What did the spies tell Rahab to do so they would know to keep her family safe? (Hang a red rope out her window)

7. Could Rahab have gotten in trouble for helping two spies? (Yes!) Did the king’s men want to capture and harm the spies? (Yes!)

8. How did Rahab rely on God’s power? (She relied on God’s power to help her protect the spies from harm)

9. When are times you should protect others from harm?

Rahab knew that the two spies were men of God, so she relied on God’s power in her to protect the men from harm. If we see others being harmed, we can rely on God’s power by protecting them.

That’s what we need to know today: “God’s Power In Me Helps Me Protect Others!”

Daily Objective:

Kids will learn to protect others from harm.

Need to Know: God’s Power In Me Helps Me Protect Others!

Bible Story: Rehab Helps Two Spies Joshua 2:1-24

What is one way superheroes protect others? (Save someone from a burning building, catch someone from falling off a cliff, etc.)

APPLICATION GAME: “Protect The Tower”

TELL kids they are going to play a game to practice protecting others from harm.

DIVIDE kids into two teams and put tape down between them. Assign one team to be “protectors” and the other team to be “attackers.”

PLAY the game:

1. Give the “protectors” 20 stacking cups and allow them to build a tower. Tell them their job is to protect their tower from any harm and to keep the beanbags off of their side.

2. Give the “attackers” 10 beanbags. Tell them that their job is to try to knock down the tower by tossing the beanbags at the tower for one minute.

3. Each child will get on their knees. The “protectors” will protect their tower by swatting away the beanbags thrown by the “attackers.” They also need to get the beanbags back on the “attackers” side. (“Attackers” may reuse the beanbags.)

4. Use the timer to time for one minute, then count the number of cups left standing.

5. Allow teams to switch roles and repeat steps 1-4.

6. Discuss with kids how they can protect others from harm. (Ex: If someone is talking bad about their friends or saying something that isn’t true, they should stand up for their friend; if they know a friend is about to make a bad decision they should talk to him or her and encourage him or her to do the right thing.)

TELL the kids the following:

REVIEW the game, discussing with the group that they had to protect their towers from being harmed by the beanbags. When we see others being harmed or about to be harmed, we should use God’s power in us to protect them. Review what we need to know today: God’s Power In Me Helps Me Protect Others! ___________________________________________________________________________________

Wrap It Up (10 min)

MEMORY VERSE: Say the verse several times while kids repeat after you.

MEMORY VERSE GAME: “Rahab’s Rope”

1. While sitting in a circle, have one child hold the end of the red yarn and say the first word of the memory verse. Without letting go, child will toss the yarn to someone else across the circle, like the diagram on the left, and that child will say the next word in the verse.

2. Continue until the yarn has made it through the whole group and the entire verse

REVIEW the Memory Verse with the group, and REVIEW the Need to Know.

FINISH UP by staying in small group, waiting for parents to arrive. Use this time to get to know your kids better by creating conversation or using the Filler Activities (see left).

Dear God, thanks for showing us that Your power in us can help us protect others. Help us protect others when we see them being harmed. We love you! Amen.

Application Game Summary:

Kids will take turns protecting their towers from beanbags to demonstrate protecting others from harm.

*Game Adaptation:

If the kids get a little rowdy or you want to make it more challenging, have the “protectors” only use one hand to block & have the “attackers” use their non-dominant hand to toss the beanbags.

Memory Verse:

“God’s Spirit is in you and is more powerful than the one that is in the world.”

1 John 4:4

Filler Activities:

Review what happened in Large Group with your group

Just like the “protectors” had to protect their towers from harm, we can use God’s power to protect others from harm. If we hear someone telling lies about our friends or about to make a bad decision then we can rely on God’s power to protect our friends.

has been said.

PRAY with your group!
