Lord, will only a few people be saved?

What a beautiful question! Now, let me ask you my brothers and sisters, have you ever asked yourself this question whether a few people will be saved or not? We may not ask ourselves this

question in life but we may be wondering whether our loved ones who have gone before us made it to heaven or not. Jesus in his public ministry met people with different questions. Some questions were about earthly things like marriages and divorce (whether it was lawful for a husband to divorce his wife for any cause what-soever- Mat. 19: 3-9), inheritance (as we heard two weeks ago, somebody from the crowd asking Jesus to tell his brother to share the inheritance with him Lk 12: 13), and others were about heavenly realities like the young man asking Jesus what he should do to obtain eternal life – Mat. 19: 16-22. In this weekend’s Gospel, someone whose name is not mentioned wants to know if few people will be saved. This question reminds me my early years in the seminary. Some teachers would give us quizzes or exams and for one to know if he had passed would ask a question like; Father, have you gone through our papers? If the priest answered “Yes”, then the next question would be “have many passed the test?” Now, the answer does not give the questioner the certainty of having passed the exam or not but if the answer was YES then the student would hope that he might be among those who have passed. Lord, will only a few people be saved? Jesus’ response to this ques-tion was very simple, smart and of course an intelligent one: “strive to enter through the narrow gate…! Rather than occupying oneself with arguments about the number of those to be saved, it is better to work hard in order to be saved. Through this, Christ reminds us that the invitation to His Feast is open to all. However, each person must struggle to be there. We must do what we have to do by playing our roles well. This is the only way we can be guaranteed a place in the feast of the Kingdom of God. In other words, it be-hooves us as individuals to make an effort to be at the glorious gathering of the saints. We have a part to play in Christ’s redemptive work. God created us without our contribution but He will not redeem us without our contribution. By His death on the cross Christ has inaugurated the process of our salvation. The second reading from the Hebrews reminds us that it is obedience and discipline that will help us respond, and effectively return to the Lord. The path to this return will definitively not be easy. In it, we shall encounter thorns and pains. As a loving father, God will also reprimand and punish us. However, this is in order to correct and guide us through the right path.

In the Lord, Fr. Gosbert Rwezahura

A Call To Action

As we read/listen to the scriptures these final weeks of our church year, we find that Jesus is calling us to action. We are to accept the invitation to be His disciples and He ex-plains what we must do. May I suggest that we read and meditate on each Sunday Gospel each day of the following week to hear the Lord calling us to action.

Jesus gives us a plan to follow to enter into the Kingdom of God. Each of the readings contains a step to follow in the plan. We must act on each step of the plan to follow Jesus and be his disciple.

I suggest that we accept the challenges of forming our new parish. We all have God’s gifts to use to construct the new parish. Have each of us accepted the call to minister to the parish through our organized ministries?

Deacon Gerry

Thank You Dear Family of Faith of St. Jude,

Thank you. I am short of words to express my gratitude to each of you who attended the Mass of installation at St. Mary. I was highly impressed with the large number of parishioners from St. Jude. St. Jude parishioners continue to amaze me. As I have told you sev-eral times, and continue to say to you, “I know I do not say, ‘Thank you’ enough. The fact that I do not say it often, does not mean I do not have it in mind. From my heart I thank you.”

May the reward promised in Matthew 10:42 be yours in abundance. Amen. From a grateful heart, Fr. Ignatius

SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School

The theme for the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools 2019-2020 school year is “Angels Among Us.” As we live out our educational ministry, we know we are surrounded by many Angels. Some of these An-gels are heavenly, and they provide us with inspiration, guidance and protection. We know that Angels are pre-sent throughout scripture, from the many proclamations of the Old Testament to the celebration of Christ’s birth at the nativity as well as many other angelic witnesses and experiences. We are so grateful to all other earthly Angels. Our Catholic schools benefit deeply by the tal-ents and support of our dedicated teachers, staff, volun-teers and other supporters. We sincerely thank the pa-rishioners of St. Jude, Holy Ghost and St. Mary Queen of Apostles Parish who over the years have been AN-GELS to us!

This class is not exclusive to those affiliated with Christ Our Savior Catholic School. If you would like to volunteer at COS in some capacity this school year and you have not registered for a Virtus class in the past, please sign up. We would love to have you as a volunteer. Please register online at www.virtus.org be-fore the evening of the class. Marsha Johnson will be the presenter for this session.

FREE BOOK EXCHANGE

We now have a Free Book Exchange by the School Of-fice. Like many of the little book exchanges that you see in the area and in towns that you may visit on your trav-els, feel free to take a book or leave a book. We are ac-cepting donations of children’s books or adult novels for our Book Exchange. Even if you do not have a book to donate as you look through our selection, just take a book to enjoy. Share the love of literature!
