NEW ALBUMS FROM TWO PIANIST/composer/bandleaders, whose composi-

tions and ensembles qualify them as jazzvisionaries, comprise this Winning Spins.Arturo O'Farrill and Diane Moser havebeen leaders since before the millennium:O'Farrill at the helm of the Afro Latin JazzOrchestra based in the Big Apple andDiane Moser leading her Jazz ComposersBig Band in New Jersey. O'Farrill's newalbum pushes the concept of Afro LatinJazz in pioneering directions, while Moserpresents a suite she composed with grantsfrom Chamber Music America played by ahandpicked band that can sound like ahard bop quintet as well as an avant gardechamber jazz ensemble.

The Offense of the Drum, ArturoO'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra(Motéma), features works by the leaderalong with guest composers and conduc-tors in a demonstration of what O'Farrillcalls musica nueva, a new direction for theorchestra that expands the parameters ofAfro Latin Jazz. The music ranges acrossthe North and South American continentsas well as the Caribbean and even NuevaYork. The drums and percussion instru-ments used on the various tracks includenot only the usual panoply of Americanand Latin trap, stand and hand drums, butalso African, Brazilian and Japanesedrums. Even turntables have a place onone cut. The orchestra is augmented attimes by guest soloists on horns, harp andvocals as well as percussion.

O'Farrill and his guest composer/arrangers make full, panoramic use of thebrass and reed sections of his 18-piece bigband with many tunes employing multi-layered, swirling horn arrangements ascomplex, energizing and layered as thepolyrhythms of the drum/percussion sec-tions. The opening track, EdmarCastañeda's "Cuarto de Colores," exempli-fies the creative complexity and ambitionof this project. It showcases Colombian folkdance rhythms as well as the rich colors ofthe orchestra in a piece where Castañeda'sColombian folk harp sounds are celebrat-ed. He plays it at times like a jazz or pedalsteel guitar, weaving in and out of his set-tings for the orchestra, sometimes duelingwith the cajón of conductor/percussionistSamuel Torres.

The album’s ten numbers (the last,cyclone-like, is an uncredited, hidden one)include three with vocals: everything froma spoken-word poem celebrating PuertoRican pride, delivered with hip-hop fervorby Chilo Cajigas, to a muezzen-ish chant

from alto saxophonist Antonio Lizano on an adaptation of Erik Satie's "Gnossienne3" and the Mardi Gras Indian staple "IkoIko," sung and played by alto saxophonistDonald Harrison.

Pianist Vijay Iyer contributes and soloson "The Mad Hatter," his comprehensive, exhilarating portrait of O'Farrill. PabloMayor evokes the marching bands ofColombia on "Mercado and Domingo" andMiguel Blanco ignites a salsa party with"Alma Vacia." O'Farrill's pieces range froma panoramic digest of jazz/Afro Latin inter-actions, "On the Corner of Malecón andBourbon," to the highly cinematic titletrack: a two-part distillation of Afro Latinand jazz rhythms and themes incorporat-ing the Japanese taiko and African djembedrums.

Music for the Last Flower, Diane MoserQuintet (Planet Arts), is a six-part suiteinspired by the "parable in pictures" bookof the same name by James Thurberdepicting war and its aftermath. The quin-tet's musicians—reedman Marty Ehrlich, trombonist Ben Williams, bassist MarkDresser, drummer Gerry Hemingway andpianist Moser—use Mingus Workshopstyle expressionism to depict the sounds ofwar on the opening piece with blaringhorns and rasping bass and drums givingway to a pounding, atonal piano solo thatsettles into brief jazz passages. Then themoans of an arco bass lead to the secondmovement, "…when love is no longer…," alyrically evocative trio track of clarinet, piano and bass with a spare folkish melodyrepeated by all, including both arco andpizzicato from Dresser.

The third movement is an even morelyrical piano solo, Moser folding arpeggiosinto swelling chords and a swaying dancefigure tune. The quintet reassembles as aLatin-tinged hard bop ensemble for thefourth movement complete with robusthorn solos, then the rumbles of war returnon the fifth movement, an elaboration ofthemes from the first. The final movementis a hymn-like dirge with a hint of opti-mism, reflected in the title: "…a hope forpeace…"

Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro LatinJazz Orchestra appear at the ApolloTheater on May 10. Diane Moser'sQuintet debuts a new suite, "Birdsongsfor Dolphy" at the first day of the EricDolphy: Freedom of Sound Festival,May 30-31, at Memorial Auditorium,Montclair State University.

HARRY ALLENSMALLS JAZZ CLUB / MAY 2-3Gifted with a warm, swinging sound, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen is usually identi-fied with mainstream jazz in the tradition of Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, StanGetz and Zoot Sims. Exposed to jazz at an early age by his father, a big band drummer,Allen studied saxophone with Sahib Shihab, Bob Mintzer, and John Purcell at Rutgers. Before graduating in 1988, he made his recording debut as a sideman on a CD withBucky Pizzarelli, Ruby Braff and John Bunch. Allen has toured extensively around theglobe and made numerous albums as a leader for Japanese and European labels, alongwith Arbors Records. Backed by Steve Ash, piano; Joel Forbes, bass and AlvinAtkinson, drums, expect Allen to explore standards and timeless jazz works, as well asto play overlooked gems such as Neal Hefti’s “Flight of the Foo Birds”. RANDY BRECKER / MADE IN NEW YORK JAZZ COMPETITIONTRIBECA PAC / MAY 3Launched last year, the Made in New York Jazz Competition is an internationalonline contest. It will hold a "gala concert" featuring two of the judges: trumpeterRandy Brecker and drummer Lenny White. Brecker has played with everyone fromCharles Mingus to Bruce Springsteen and White is best known for his work on MilesDavis' Bitches Brew. Billed as The New Millennials, the performers taking the stagewith these two luminaries were competitors from last year: Brazilian guitaristRicardo Baldacci, harmonica player Hermine Deurloo from The Netherlands, key-boardist Vladimir Maras from Montenegro, Hungarian singer Rozina Patkai,Russian saxophonist Nick Vintskevich, bassist Pablo Elorza from Argentina, theGerman NGA Big Band and saxophonist Yaacov Mayman, who serves as the compe-tition’s art director. YE

ANTONIO HARTMINTON'S / MAY 5Now venturing toward becoming an elder statesman, saxophonist Antonio Hart hasfostered a career that still feels full of youthful exuberance but with the wisdom of tal-ent and time. Hart's utilization of controlled lyrical passages with breakneck improvi-sational devices adds a dramatic arc to every tune he performs. After working withesteemed luminary Roy Hargrove, Hart recorded his debut album, For the First Timein 1991. In concert with his performance and recording schedule, Hart is a full profes-sor at Queens College where he teaches the next generation of jazz giants. At Minton's,Hart will host a late-night jam session featuring young up and comers of the jazz sceneas a part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival. EW

JACQUI NAYLORIRIDIUM / MAY 7-8San Francisco-based singer Jacqui Naylor will reveal more of the depth and breadth ofher refreshing take on jazz during her latest Big Apple visit. She is bringing new orig-inal material and will draw from 2013's Dead Divas Society, her tip of the hat to hermany influences, ranging from June Christy, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and PeggyLee to Mama Cass Elliott, Freddie Mercury, Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse. Nayloris also likely to dig into her stunning "acoustic smash-up" technique, in which she singsa classic rock lyric over a jazz standard or vice versa. Naylor's band consists of twolongtime West Coast collaborators, Art Khu on piano and guitar and Josh Jones ondrums, and New Yorker Richie Goods on bass. KF

ANDERSON BROTHERS / HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZTRIBECA PAC / MAY 8Twin saxophonists Peter and Will Anderson are a perfect example of two heads beingbetter than one. Outfitting a group with alto and tenor saxophones perfectly encapsu-lates the wide harmonic array and colorful timbral ranges each instrument canachieve. The twins' talents have been utilized by everyone from Wynton Marsalis to theNew York City Ballet. Several periodicals have taken notice with JazzTimes notingthat their improvisations "generate lots of color and contrast." Their most recentrelease, Reed Reflections (Gut String Records), features their interpretations of stan-dards by Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern and other luminaries of jazz andpopular music. For this concert, they'll perform the music of two other notable siblings, the Dorsey Brothers, featuring guest trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. EW

JERRY WELDONSMOKE JAZZ & SUPPER CLUB / MAY 21One pleasure of a Rutgers University Jazz Ensemble concert circa 1980 was the confi-dent, muscular tenor sax solos of Jerry Weldon. After graduating Rutgers, New Yorknative Weldon went on to a featured role in Lionel Hampton's Big Band, taking up theIllinois Jacquet part. He's worked extensively in Harry Connick Jr.'s big band but hasalso developed a penchant for soul jazz, working with such B3 organ masters as JackMcDuff, Jimmy McGriff and Joey DeFrancesco. A founder of the New York Hard BopQuintet, Weldon is a tenacious swinger with a bruising yet clarion tone but he can be asromantic as Ben Webster or Dexter Gordon on a slow ballad. Here he leads a quartetwith Jeb Patton on piano, Mike Karn, bass and Willie Jones III, drums. GK

MARCOS VALLE AND ROBERTO MENESCALBIRDLAND / MAY 27-31Bossabrasil is the co-op project for pianist/vocalist Marcos Valle and guitarist RobertoMenescal with their large ensemble of Brazilian friends. Tapping primarily from bossanova sources, the group will perform their personally written hit tunes, as well as themusic of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Valle himself is a great instrumentalist and a prolificcomposer of songs, having written more than 300 of them. Menescal recently won aLatin Grammy for lifetime achievement in Brazilian music. Both artists are in their sev-enties, but are performing together in NYC for the first time. The band features drum-mer Renato Massa, trumpeter Jesse Sadoc and vocalist Patricia Alvi, all importeddirectly from Rio de Janeiro. Joining them are bassist Itaguara Brandao and JorgeContinentino on saxes and flutes. MGN

ERIK FRIEDLANDERSUBCULTURE / MAY 22One could enjoy few musical experiences as dizzyingly eclectic, or as fundamentallyrewarding, as listening to cellist Erik Friedlander's projects. The versatile musician andcomposer's efforts might recall thorny bop lines or meld with ethereal electronica-fla-vored works, augment jazz-rock ensembles, solo in klezmer-influenced styles, or forgocollaborators altogether in dazzling solo improvisations that seamlessly straddle themany worlds in which Friedlander works. At this performance, Friedlander will bejoined by his Bonebridge ensemble featuring like-minded musical polyglots DougWamble, Trevor Dunn and Michael Sarin. Focusing on Americana-influenced traditions, though interpreting them in novel and at times somewhat experimental capacities, theband will celebrate the release of its latest album Nighthawks. Fans of Marc Ribot oreven Tom Waits can rejoice: this one's for you. SH

JOE LOVANOBLUE NOTE / MAY 27-JUNE 1On the heels of touring Us Five, saxophonist Joe Lovano is debuting his VillageRhythms Band which he says is "new music inspired by a lifetime of touring interna-tionally and finding myself in some very exotic, organic places." Especially inspiringwas a trip to Lagos Nigeria in 1981 where he turned 29 on Dec. 29 and met Fela Kuti. That experience continues to motivate him, he says. He describes this concept as "therhythm of the planet before there were cities." Performing this "music from the soul ofthe people that lived it," is Liberty Ellman, guitar; Tim Hagans, trumpet; MattGarrison, electric bass; Otis Brown III, drums; Senegalese drummer Abdou Mboup, talking drum, conga and Kora, and Mboup and Judi Silvano, vocals.

RYAN KISORDIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / MAY 26-27Trumpeter Ryan Kisor's agile technique demonstrates a talent well beyond his 40 years.Since winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute's first annual LouisArmstrong Trumpet Competition in 1990, the Iowa native has built a reputation as oneof the strongest trumpeters in contemporary jazz. Kisor's debut record as a leader,Minor Mutiny, was released in 1992 when he was only 19. Since then, the trumpeter hasbuilt a tone that is strong in character and harmonically sophisticated which he show-cases as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Mingus Orchestra. He has also played with Gerry Mulligan and Horace Silver. At Dizzy's, Kisor will bejoined by pianist Peter Zak, drummer Willie Jones III, bassist John Webber and gui-tarist Peter Bernstein. EW

DION PARSON SHANGHAI JAZZ / MAY 2-3Destined to be a drummer, Dion Parson discovered music at 14 and started out on thetrombone. However, the rhythms of his native St. Thomas lured him to drumming andhe's had his hands in it ever since. Studies at Interlochen Music Academy, RutgersUniversity and guiding from master drummer Michael Carvin developed skillsrecruited by Milt Jackson, Monty Alexander, Jon Faddis, Steve Turre, Gary Bartz andTerence Blanchard, among others of note. Parson sought out his own group sound with21st Century Band co-founded with fellow islander, saxophonist Ron Blake. Its inno-vative music fuses jazz with the Caribbean rhythms of calypso and reggae along withBrazilian, African and Cuban influences. Here Parson will share an island night withbassist Paul Beaudry, pianist Carlton Holmes and Victor Provost on steel pans.

DAVID GIBSONMAKEDA / MAY 29Trombonist David Gibson showed an affinity to music as a teenager growing up inYukon OK. From the University of Central Oklahoma, he furthered his craft at thefamed Eastman School of Music and was acknowledged as a finalist in the firstThelonious Monk Competition for trombone. Gibson's arrival in NYC in 1999 foundhim alongside Slide Hampton, James Moody, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Heath in theDizzy Gillespie Alumni Band, and recording with Nancy Wilson and Wycliffe Gordon. His funk chops would play out weekly in the Hot Pants Funk Sextet at Smoke. Gibson'slove of the organ quartet is evident on his 2011 CD, End of the Tunnel (Posi-tone),with saxophonist Bruce Williams, organist Ron Oswonski and drummer Vince Ector.

JED LEVYCHRIST CHURCH / MAY 17Saxophonist Jed Levy has interpreted the familiar worlds of Bill Evans, Miles Davisand Duke Ellington, but always with a different perspective. With a pedigree from theNew England Conservatory, his varied approach has been part of the Temptations,Mingus Dynasty, Jack McDuff, the Chico O'Farrill Afro Latin Jazz and Cab CallowayOrchestras. Levy has embraced the haunted melodies of Rahsaan Roland Kirk and hisown numerous recordings show an infinite display of ideas, both in and out of tradi-tion. The focus of this performance is his latest recording, The Italian Suite(Steeplechase). After a preconcert discussion Levy will perform with drummerAlvester Garnett, bassist Thomson Kneeland and pianist Misha Tsiganov.

WILLIE WILLIAMSLUNA STAGE / MAY 3Saxophonist Willie Williams began his life in music with his first recording at age 12!After high school, with day studies at Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts,Williams' nights found him in the organ combos of Charles Earland, Groove Holmesand Don Patterson. Packing an excellent tone and swinging attack, Williams headedfor New York, spreading his jazz message with Art Blakey, wailing with ArthurTaylor, inventing with Bobby Watson, touring with Clifford Jordan's big band andrecording with Cedar Walton and TS Monk. Williams' own albums like WW 3 andSpirit Willie (Enja) document a style that has blistered stages around the world. Forthis WBGO Kids Concert, he will demonstrate the tenor sax in jazz and blues, with alook and listen to the "Pink Panther Theme," "My Favorite Things" and other gems todevelop the next generation of jazz fans.

BASSIST MARTIN WIND'S WORKas a classical musician, primarily in his

native Germany, has honed in him excep-tional sight reading skills, an impeccablearco bowing technique and great intona-tion and has helped establish him as a firstcall jazz sideman since he came to theUnited States in 1996. Those aptitudesalso make him an asset in the recordingstudio and he can be heard on films likeMona Lisa Smile and the Coen Brothers'True Grit.

A lifelong collaboration with his bestfriend and fellow Flensburg native, gui-tarist Ulf Meyer, has produced six albumssince 1993. Wind also has worked exten-sively with pianist/composer Bill Mays, recording at least five albums with him indifferent group iterations. Last year, Windtoured with Matt Wilson's Arts and CraftsQuartet, promoting the very successfulrelease An Attitude for Gratitude. On thebandstand, Wilson and Wind have an easyswing and seamless rapport. Wind creditsWilson for "being so instrumental in thesearch of my own voice. I started to trustmy instincts when I was with him."

Wind's music has been labeled roman-tic, sensitive, lyrical and even contempla-tive. "They are certainly one side of who Ithink I am," he says. "The other side is thegroove element." He considers himself adescendent of the Ray Brown school of basswith the great Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen sited as a majorinfluence as well.

"As a result of my classical background, having played Mahler symphonies andBrahms and Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev …that is a big reason why I have that lyrical, romantic side to my music world as well,"Wind says. "I live with that. I don't have aproblem being called a romantic dinosauror whatever."

Wind has led his own quartets for thelast several years and recently he has beenworking with the iconic 71-year-old

Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine. Theyrecorded their first album Duo Arts, NewFolks and will soon be making a second one.

The bassist's most ambitious project todate is his soon to be released Turn Outthe Stars, a collection of songs inspired orwritten by the great pianist Bill Evans.Arranged for orchestra by Wind, the discfeatures the bassist's quartet and theItalian Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigianaunder the direction of Massimo Morganti.

It was inevitable that Wind and thework of Evans would at some point inter-sect. "Bill touched me with his sound," hesays. "His piano touch had that impact onme and I was hooked; it's as simple asthat."

On Turn Out the Stars, Wind's quartetis rounded out by the sensitive pianist BillCunliffe, the unpredictable and underratedmulti-reed player Scott Robinson and thetasteful former Evans drummer JoeLaBarbera. Bringing in LaBarbera for thisproject was a no-brainer. "He is an amaz-ingly complete musician" Wind says. Thetwo met while playing in Florida withpianist Mays and hit it off. But the Evansalumnus never offered any suggestionswhen dealing with the music of his formerbandleader. "He respected us enough asmusicians to not give us any guidelines,"Wind says. "After we performed the musicat a concert in Italy Joe did offer that 'Billwould have really loved this.' Which Ithought was a great compliment."

Of Robinson, with whom he has record-ed several albums, Wind says, "He alwaysstruck me as so different and so unique andalways one hundred percent himself nomatter which style of music he would play.He became the voice of my music."

The CD is a sumptuous treat, a seam-less combination of swinging ensemble andlush orchestration work. The title trackand two other songs, "Twelve Tone TuneTwo" and the cinematically sweepingtreatment of "Blue and Green," are allEvans originals. The Henry Mancini piece"Days of Wine and Roses" and the VictorYoung composition "My Foolish Heart"were both made famous by Evan's timelesstreatments. Robinson's "Jeremy," DonFriedman's "Memory of Scottie," PhilWoods' dedication "Goodbye Mr. Evans"and LaBarbera's "Kind of Bill" round outthe tunes. The players are all in top formand the music glistens with love, respectand a deep sense of connection. The bassistis working on being able to perform hisEvans' project with full orchestra in theUnited States sometime soon.

Martin Wind's quartet with ScottRobinson, Joe LaBarbera and BillMays is at Jazz at Kitano on May 30and 31 for the New York debut of TurnOut the Stars. The quartet also willappear at Bernard's in Ridgefield CTon June 1.

30 Weston photo by Ariane Smolderen

NURTURED BY CULTURAL ROOTSfirmly linking him to Jamaica, and a

lifelong artistic commitment to exploringthe African connection to music, Brooklynresident Randy Weston is today's pre-emi-nent voice of international jazz. Standingat 6 feet 7 inches, his imposing physicalpresence is matched by his virtuosity as amusician, which was once characterized byblack writer, social activist and intellectu-al Langston Hughes as, "A combination ofstrength and gentleness…with an ebb andflow of sound seemingly as natural as thewaves of the sea."

Born in Brooklyn in 1926, Weston'sinterest in music began as a child withclassical piano training. Gifted with anunusually fine ear that was attuned to thegrowing role of jazz in American culture,he was captivated by the sounds of CountBasie, Duke Ellington and, above all,Thelonious Monk. Weston describes Monkas: "The most original jazz player I've everheard. He played like they must haveplayed in Egypt 5,000 years ago!"

Honing his skills as a jazz artist,Weston moved to Africa in the 1960s,where he settled in Morocco as his homebase. During his time on that continent, hetraveled to other African nations in searchof his musical roots. His most memorableexperience during this period was the 1977Nigerian Festival, an event that drewartists from 60 cultures and served as anepiphany for him. In recalling that timeand event, Weston says, "We all realizedthat our music was different and yet some-how the same. In many ways I came torealize that these various musical styles, samba, jazz and blues, were MotherAfrica's message for survival in the NewWorld."

As part of his African experience,Weston also discovered, like so manyartists before him, that art in general, andmusic in particular, is the mirror and soulof society. His 1960 work, Uhuru Afrika, ajazz album that celebrated the independ-ence movement in Africa and the vital roletraditional African music played in trans-forming that continent, was ultimatelybanned by the South African apartheidregime in1964. Rulers of the South Africannation at that time believed that thealbum, which opened with a poem byLangston Hughes calling for freedom, wastoo inflammatory.

With a career that spans more than sixdecades and includes over 47 CDs,Weston's growth and sophistication as a

musician are apparent to even the mostcasual listener. Among his many importantrecordings are Cole Porter in a ModernMood (Riverside, 1954), The Modern Art ofJazz (Dawn, 1956) and Marrakech in theCool of the Evening (Verve, 1992).

The recipient of numerous awards fromart programs, universities and colleges,Weston's accomplishments as a jazz musi-cian have garnered him the honorary titleof Doctor of Music from the New EnglandConservatory of Music (2013), Maine'sColby College (2012) and Brooklyn College(2006). Weston was also awarded the pres-tigious Composer of the Year Award fromDownbeat Magazine in 1994, 1996 and1999. The National Endowment for theArts also acknowledged Weston's contribu-tion to music with a fellowship as a JazzMaster in 2001. On the international front,at the invitation of the Archbishop ofCanterbury, Weston and a group of musi-cians from the nation of Ghana performedat Canterbury Cathedral in 2002. He alsowas awarded The French Order of Artsand Letters in 1997.

Maintaining a travel schedule thatwould induce terminal jet lag in those halfhis age, the 86-year-old brings his skills asa jazz pianist to audiences in Asia, Europe,Africa, the Caribbean and the Far Eastthroughout the year. "I really don't have aset schedule," Weston says, "I travel on avery impromptu basis." Having just com-pleted a tour of supper clubs and concertdates in Switzerland, South Africa andFrance, Weston is now preparing forupcoming concerts in the United States.

For New York City based aficionados ofjazz and its link to African culture, Westonis a familiar figure at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola where he often performs in an inti-mate and inviting club atmosphere. Forthose interested in following Weston's per-formances, his website is www.randyweston.info.

Randy Weston will appear with BillHarper and Lewis Nash at the ApolloTheatre on May 10; from May 22 to 25he will play at Jazz Standard and atthe Concord Baptist Church of Christin Brooklyn on May 31.

draws inspiration for her writing from arange of sources including climbing moun-tains in Alaska and the Andes, visiting theNew Mexico home of renowned artistGeorgia O'Keeffe and a fundraising run inthe New York Marathon. "Sometimes ithappens at the time I'm doing it; some-times it happens a bit later," she says."When I'm in a rarefied environment, Icome back inspired to write. I made notesfor a piece while climbing Mount McKinley. After climbing Aconcagua in theArgentinean Andes, I was inspired byimages I brought back from the trip." Thetitle composition of Rowe's new CD,Courage Music (PKO), was sparked by apoem of that name by Rowe's sister, JudyMichaels, a cancer survivor. She wrote thepoem to laud the courage she saw in Rowe'sperforming improvisational music. "I wasso struck by it," the pianist says, "knowingwhat she's gone through—and she say Ihave courage!" Rowe's compositions andarrangements have been played by theVillage Vanguard Orchestra, Diva JazzOrchestra, Westchester Jazz Orchestraand others. Based in Ann Arbor—she'sassociate professor and chair of theDepartment of Jazz and ContemporaryImprovisation at the University ofMichigan—Rowe doesn't get to New Yorkas often as she'd like. But she'll be in townon May 6 directing the University ofMichigan Jazz Ensemble at theShapeShifter Lab. "I want to give themroad experience and want to give them per-forming experience," Rowe says. "Playingin New York is everyone's goal." Besidesdoing material by Jimmy Heath, CharlesMingus and John Clayton, the band willget a chance to stretch out and try theirhand at some courage music as well.

Swinging from the rootsSaxophonist Kit McClure figures that

310 musicians have played in her big

bands and small ensembles over theyears—most of them women. "I've knownsome of them for 30 years. We've traveledtogether; I've seen their kids grow up," shesays. "You get on a wavelength wherethings don't have to be spoken and it comesout in the music. Time—there's no substi-tute for that." For the InternationalWomen in Jazz (IWJ) pre-Mother's Dayconcert at St. Peter's Church May 10,bassist Kim Clarke, drummer BerniceBrooks, pianist Jill McCarron, trumpeterAngeleisha Rodgers and singer LouiseBethune will join McClure on stage. "Fourstalwarts and a young lady on trumpetwho's new in town," McClure says. Rodgersis supplying an arrangement attributed tothe pioneering trumpeter Clora Bryant, onwhom she did her master's research. "It'sgreat to play with a like-minded individualwho values the tradition of the women whowent before," McClure says. "She's digginginto the roots and shining light on ourunsung foremothers. She's bringing some-thing to the scene that we didn't havebefore. The music sounds new becausenobody hears it." They will also play mate-rial from McClure's four CDs, includingThe Sweethearts Project: tunes done by theInternational Sweethearts of Rhythm, arenowned all-female swing band from themid-1940s. "When playing familiar tunes,we come at it as if it's new each time. Wehave that confidence in ourselves, that wehave something new to say with thismusic," McClure says. "And we come at itwith a spirit of fun—that's what we aimfor, and that's what we do." The saxophon-ist is looking forward to playing the IWJevent: "I don't always get a chance to havean audience with such close links and deepinterest in women in jazz and their history."

Musician-Author's CornerA brief glance at the musical résumé of

drummer Artt Frank is, to put it mildly, impressive. A then-relative youngster whosat in with Charlie Parker, Tadd Dameron,Dexter Gordon and Bud Powell, Frankwent on to enjoy musical affiliations withJimmy Heath, Al Cohn, Sonny Stitt andmany others. However, even within thisextensive list of collaborators and inspira-tion, one name stands pre-eminent inFrank's career: Chet Baker.

"Chet called me the brother he neverhad," Frank says. "We really were thatclose." Indeed, an understanding of Baker'slife is incomplete without knowing Frank, who became a collaborator, supporter, advocate and confidant to Baker and whohelped get the trumpeter's life and careerback on track.

While Frank and Baker met briefly atGeorge Wein's Storyville club in Boston in1954, the two artists did not fully reconnectuntil 1967. By that point, Frank recalls,"Chet had been beaten up about tenmonths prior. He was missing some of histeeth and he couldn't really play. So I invit-ed him, his wife and children over to din-ner. And that's when we became friends. He saw in me a man who was not there totake advantage of him, but someone whowas there to help and support him."

Baker's influence on Frank's playingproved transformative, as Baker impartedto Frank the importance of melody and theprimacy of beauty in tone, all while encour-aging the young drummer to provide sym-pathetic support to soloists, particularly inballads. Frank, in turn, provided Bakerwith a crucial level of personal support, working with him to rebuild his chops, re-assemble a band, locate gigs, resumerecording and restart his career.

Frank has since detailed their personalrapport in Chet Baker: The Missing Years, the first in a two-volume memoir about histime with Baker. Drawing upon his yearsof work and close bond with Baker, Franknotes that the book offers a new look intothe life of this legendary artist. "I tell aboutanother side of Chet; a side that's neverbeen told before," he explains. "The thingsI have read about Chet in biographies havebeen negative, but I knew him and playedwith him and the stories I read were notthe Chet Baker I knew. That's whatinspired me to write my book: to tell realthe story of my friend."

Indeed, even a cursory look at Baker

biographies shows a tilt toward focusing onthe artist's often stormy life and relation-ships. Frank sees it differently and hopeshis memoir will shed new light on the manand his music. "I was very blessed to havemet him and helped him get back to the top,but the book is really about this other side ofChet," Frank notes. "He was a loner, yes,but he was also a giving and compassionateman. He was a family man who loved hiswife and children. He was a gracious manwho taught me so much." Before the war John Altman's mother was in a London pub with Fats Waller and a groupof people. Someone asked Fats to play something on the pub piano, but as he made his waytowards it, the landlord yelled, "Oi, don't touch that - professionals have to use it!"

Herb Gardner was on a gig with Robbie Scott's band, the annual debutante ball that wentfrom midnight to four A.M. During a break around three-fifteen, bassist Mike Weatherlylooked at his coffee mug and said, "If I drink this, I'll be up all night!"

Pablo Casals was asked why, at the age of ninety, he still practiced the cello. He replied,"Because I think I'm making progress."

Turk Mauro told me that, one night backstage at the Village Vanguard, Zoot Sims said,"I'm just the opposite of paranoid. I keep having the feeling I'm following someone."
