Objectives: This presentation is a complete guide to prepare for Poetry Recitation Competition
on Pakistani English poets. It will enable students to understand the skills required to participate well in a
poetry recitation competition. It is an acknowledgement and a tribute to the Pakistani legends who have created
marvelous poetic work in English language. The first ever Poetry Recitation Competition on Pakistani English poets is to be held
Insha Allaah in last week of April, 2016. I congratulate NUML Lahore for this initiative.
I wish all readers a best of luck and hope they enjoy Pakistani English poetry.

Steps to FollowPhase 1:
Choose your poem. The poem should be from a Pakistani poet’s published work either in
English or translated in English. Know all unknown/ new words’ meanings.
As English is not your/ our mother tongue, write meanings of each and every unknown word.
Listen to each word’s pronoun citation on internet. Remember my example of word ‘cleanliness’? Key to Success: Don’t Hesitate to Learn and Don’t Leave any Leaf
Unturned. Learn the poem by heart
Phase 2:
Listen to at least ten English poems. The poems you shall listen SHALL NOT be the same ones as the ones you are to
present, you shall be among the first ones to introduce the world to the audio format of Pakistani English poetry.
So with what intention and mind set are you going to hear these poems?????1. Just read the text of the poem you are about to listen, read it aloud and
intentionally decide your style. Also check the tone you think suits to the poem.2. While hearing it on internet, carefully note where the speaker pauses, becomes
louder, lowers his tone, brings sarcasm in their voice.3. Check the tone brought forth by the speaker.
Compare your style with the one you have heard on internet. Practice your poem at least 100 times bringing style. Use help from friends,
asking them to make your video, audio. Listen, see and improve.
Work on your body language and style. Check out snaps on internet for body language. Note your body language, make notes and improveNOTE: Life is not only about reaching the destination, but the in-between journey is also equally important. Thus, throughout the preparation of your competition, keep enjoying every step of learning.
