In 1721 the Kingdom of Sweden, of which Finland was then part, founded Hamina on the site of the former town of Vehka-lahti destroyed in the Great Northern War. A fortress in the shape of an almost perfect circle with six bastions was then built round the town, the only opening being that overlooking the lake nowadays known as Kirkkojärvi.

The ramparts were made of peat and sand bound together by willow webbing. The “points” of the star-shaped fortress were named the Lappeenranta, Hämeenlinna, Savonlinna, Hamina, Turku and Helsinki bastions after Finland’s other fortifi ed towns.

Under the Treaty of Turku in 1743 Hami-na was annexed to Russia, and in 1791-92 the fortress was added to as part of the defence system for St Petersburg. Deeper moats were dug, stone walls were built

and the fortress acquired its present look. Work on the open side to the north began in 1803. Some 2 million bricks went into the building of the central bastion rest-ing on three-metre greystone foundations over piles driven six metres into the earth.

The City of Hamina began restoring and repairing its fortress in 1957. Over the decades the restoration programme has expanded to take in the historical garrison buildings as well.

Work on restoring the central bastion, nowadays the Hamina Bastion arena, be-gan in 1978, and 600 000 bricks were re-quired for the 58 vaults or casemates. By 1986 the masonry was fi nished. The Bas-tion as it is known today was completed in 1998.

It is impossible to get lost in the circular streets of the old city

centre. The Town Hall at the very centre of the circle is always

a good landmark, since it can be seen from every street cor-

ner. The sights are, furthermore, close together. For a better

view of the town and its history it is worth climbing to the top

of the ramparts round the centre. The surrounding country-

side and archipelago are also full of interesting things to see.

Hamina’s colourful past

History is never far away in the circular town centre and fortress. A border town,

Hamina was a major battlefi eld in the great 18th century wars between Sweden and

Russia. The national borders were shifted time and time again, so that sometimes the

town would belong to Sweden, at others to Russia. There would always be soldiers tra-

velling east or west, and several times the town was burnt to the ground. Many stories,

still moving in the present day, are told of these manoeuvres. The town centre sights, the

old buildings still standing and the many museums present a lively picture of the town’s

chequered history.

Signs of quarrying can still be seen on Pitkä-Kotka, for in the 19th century stone was quarried here to build St Isaac’s Cathedral in St Petersburg.

There are natural harbours at, for instance Koi-vuluoto, Pikku-Musta, Suur-Pisi, Pitkä-Kotka, Majasaari-Nuokot (several natural harbours)

Suur-PisiThe island is a suitable size for boaters and provides shelter even in high winds. The Pisi islands are famous for their visit by the King of Sweden in 1777 and their war-time history. Traces of the fortifi ca-tions are still visible to people walking round the island. Suur-Pisi is a good place in which to spend the night and is popular with bird-watchers.

Pisi is about 10 nautical miles from Virojoki.60°27,0’ N / 27° 38,1’ EMooring: anchor

The Suur-Pisi rock engravingHewn into the rock at Suuri-Pisi is the emblem of King Gustavus III of Sweden. It is dated 14 June 1777, when the King and the royal fl eet sought refuge from a storm on the island.

ArktikaArktika, the migration of arctic birds, is the most impressive ornitho-logical event to be seen in Finland. Millions of aquatic birds and hun-dreds of thousands of geese travel along the Gulf of Finland in May on their way to their arctic nesting grounds. They mostly keep to the sea, so the coastal headlands and islands are excellent for watching them. Virolahti is right on the migration path. The peak moments are during the last two weeks in May each year. The timing depends a lot on the weather, because a strong headwind halts many species of birds.

BoatingDreaming of a life on the waves and a sense of freedom? Then Viro-lahti, its harbours and islands, is a place with a difference and a touch of exoticism right on the Russian border. With its good harbours and services, its colourful history and natural beauty, it has much to in-terest the boater. It is also a good stopping point for travellers to or from the Saimaa Canal.

A haven by the sea,

on the Finnish-Russian

frontier

Virolahti could be

described as a frontier

town on the Gulf of

Finland, right down in the

most south-easterly cor-

ner of Finland.

Life in Virolahti is

dominated by the frontier

and the sea and Finland’s

busiest border-crossing

point, Vaalimaa.

The E18 highway running

through it gives the town

a character of its own.

SIGHTS

Virolahti’s location right by the sea and the national frontier also gives the sights an ad-ditional dimension. Centuries of contacts with different people have afforded the town a strong cultural foundation. The varied scenery guarantees a beautiful environment while the inspiring sea and chequered history promise plenty to interest the visitor. Virojoki is the administrative centre of Virolahti and has the municipality’s services and most of its recrea-tional facilities. Finland’s most easterly sea route comes right to the centre of Virojoki.

Virolahti Bunker Museum

The Bunker Museum established in 1980 is a military history museum. The permanent ex-hibition is devoted to the fortification of the eastern front at Virolahti in 1940-41 and 1944. The museum is part of the war-time defence position stretching from the Gulf of Finland to Salla in Lapland and the field defence system right up to the Arctic Ocean. The former can well be called Finland’s biggest construction project, because in addition to military per-sonnel it employed, at its peak, 35 000 civil-ians and 2 000 members of the women’s aux-iliary services. The Bunker Museum area is in the Virolahti village of Ylä-Pihlaja on highway E18 (7) about 20 km from Hamina in the di-rection of Virojoki.

Virolahti Local Museum

Virolahti Local Museum is set amid the idyl-lic landscape of Pyterlahti village on the great coastal road dating from the Middle Ages. It is housed in a primary school for girls built in 1872 and designed by the Vyborg architect Fredrik Odenvall. The building has much in common with the model designs for elemen-tary schools approved some two decades later. At around the time the school was founded one of the active supporters of the project was Uno Cygnaeus, a leading figure in the devel-opment of Finland’s education system. The museum moved into the premises when the school closed down and was officially opened in 1976.

Harju Learning Centre

Harju Learning Centre operates on an old manor estate as a college specialising in natu-ral resources. It covers nearly 900 hectares of forest, field and sea, with the various recrea-tional potential these afford. The Centre has varied facilities for outings, conferences, train-ing sessions and special occasions. Tourists will be touched by the buildings surrounding the house and representing different centu-ries, and the Harju horses. The Salpa defence line is visible through the Harju fields and there are five bunkers hidden in the grounds.

Virolahti Church

The church in the centre of the main village dates from the 18th century and is open to tourists, who should nevertheless book in advance in winter. The stone sacristy in the grounds is 16th/17th century.

VA ALIMA A

Gateway to the east

Vaalimaa is Finland’s busiest border-crossing point to Russia. More than two million vehi-cles cross the frontier via the Vaalimaa border station each year. As a result, many services, forwarding agencies and special goods shops have opened in the area. Vaalimaa is develop-ing faster than any other part of Virolahti. One of the service centres at the border is Rajahovi, where travellers can eat, exchange currency, find tourist information and shop

Museum road

The highway between Hamina and Virojoki is part of the Great Coastal Road leading from Turku to Viipuri since the late 14th century. For 35 kilometres it follows the old road from Virojoki to Hamina, featuring sights, services and events along the way.

Salpa TrailThe Salpa Trail is a one-way hiking trail 50 km long in Virolahti and Miehikkälä. For part of the way it follows the Salpa Finnish defence line built in the Second World War. Hikers can learn a little about Finland’s military history by visiting some of the numerous dugouts and other fortifications.

GUIDES

The fortress town abounds in colourful his-tory, events and people whose stories still live on in the present day. The best way to learn these stories is with a guide. The town has also devised a series of themes for its visitors. A journey back into the past with a guide cast in a historical role, a visit to a museum brought to life by means of drama, and a vision of life in the country and archipelago in days gone by create an interesting backcloth to life in Hamina today.

Ask Hamina Tourist Service to make you an offer for a guided tour of the town centre and sights, an outing into the country or to the sea and the islands!
