Henry Jenkins[Participatory culture] is a culture with relatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic engagement, strong support for creating and sharing one’s creations, and some type of informal mentorship whereby what is known by the most experienced is passed along to novices.

Mezirow

The MOOC incorporates the concept of transformative learning. Mezirow (1997) describes a learning process that includes reflection on experience: “Transformative learners move toward a frame of reference that is more inclusive, discriminating, self- reflective, and integrative of experience” (p. 5).

As learners encounter new ideas, new approaches – and for the MOOC, new technologies – they constantly update and broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

Thoughts from Participants

The Hyperlinked Library MOOC | SJSU SLIS | Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0

“In the last few weeks, I've been more enthusiastic about my job than I have in a long time, thanks to this MOOC...”

The Hyperlinked Library MOOC | SJSU SLIS | Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0

“I’m here to learn and figure out how I might play a role in MOOCs on my campus.”

The Hyperlinked Library MOOC | SJSU SLIS | Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0

I am making a commitment to this MOOC, and already, there are some differences that seem like they may keep me engaged. Having a “homeroom” and other “tribes” connects me to a smaller group of people.
