was organising this event, but unfortunately has comedown with the lurgi, so Susan, Megan and Charmaine arehelping out.

Before the meeting I spied Susan and Heather deep indiscussion, working on plans for a dinner dance fund rais-ing event next April. More about that later, we weretold!

Apart from some golfers losing most of their balls in thewater hazards, our BRAGG golf group had a fun day atPatterson River Country Club, thanks to Heather’s brilliant

organisation. As PP James said, everything was 100%organised, even for some of us late comers! Thanks againHeather, and also to Brian and Jill Kimpton, who assistedHeather with the arrangements with the Club.

Speaking of golf, Jim O’Brien is looking for sponsors for

the Mayoral golf day next April, so if you know someone

who might be able to assist on this please let Jim know.

A reminder to you all; we will be holding a special raffleat our Christmas party on 20th December to raise fundsto send to Peter Gray (CCASVA) in Cambodia. This is sohe can give all his kids a Christmas treat. We are lookingfor donations of raffle prizes from members – wrappedplease. It would probably be best if you are able tobring these along on the night, but in the meantime pleasedrop me a short note to let me know.

Next week we are back at VGC, with Neil Cole speaking

on “Stability in the mind”. See you then.

Stay safe and have a wonderful week

President John

Bicycle Recycling Programme

Malcolm Sawle and I attended a meeting at South Mel-bourne where the Uniting Church has established a pro-gramme for re-cycling bicycles.

We are looking at this as a community service projectlocally to gain training for volunteers to help fix cycles, putting something back into the community and providefellowship similar to that enjoyed by Beaumaris Mens’

Shed.

Several other groups are involved including BentleighMoorabbin Central Rotary.

BEAUMARIS CONCOURSE CHRISTMASFAIRBeaumaris Rotary helped out at the Beaumaris Con-course Christmas Fair on Friday evening, providingman-power to help with the running of this largecommunity event; Our tasks ended up being a bit of

a bus-mans holiday; Roy, parking cars on the prima-ry school oval, and Chris fighting back hordes ofyouths scrambling to get on the rides!

Despite some obvious challenges with the event or-ganisation, it was a good opportunity for Rotary tohelp out & be visible in the community. The event

was very well attended and all present appeared tobe having a good time, particularly the off-duty Ro-tarians!

We raised a small amount of money from gold coindonations from the car parking, and may be in for acut of any profits arising from the rides. Many thanksto all those who helped out on the night, and particu-

larly Malcolm Sawle for organising our involvement.

This Week’s Gags Topic; Ancient IT

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by thename of Abraham Com did take unto himself ayoung wife by the name of Dot.

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoul-der and long of leg.Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband,“Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with

thy goods when thoucanst trade them without ever leaving thy tent?”

And Abraham did look at her as though she was sev-

eral saddle bags shortof a camel load, but simply said, “How, dear?”

And Dot replied, “ I will place drums in all the towns

and drums inbetween to send messages saying what you have forsale, and they will reply telling you who hath the bestprice.

And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery

made by Uriah’s Pony Stable (UPS).”

Abraham thought long and hard and decided hewould let Dot have her waywith the drums.

And the drums rang out and were an immediate suc-cess.Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever havingto move from his tent.

To prevent neighbouring countries from over hearingwhat the drums weresaying,Dot devised a system that only she and the drummersknew.

It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound(MSDOS), and she alsodeveloped a language to transmitideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP).

And young men did take to Dot Com’s trading as

doth the greedy horseflytake to camel dung.

They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Domini-can Sybarites, orNERDS.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new

riches and thedeafening sound of drums that noone noticed that the real riches were going to thatenterprising drumdealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. Andindeed did insist ondrums to be made that wouldwork only with Brother Gates’ drumheads and drum-

sticks.

And Dot did say, “Oh, Abraham, what we started isbeing taken over byothers.”

And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, oreBay as it came tobe known, and he said“We need a name that reflects what we are.”

And Dot replied, “Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner

Operators.”

“YAHOO,” exclaimed Abraham. And because it wasDot’s idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.

Abraham’s cousin being the young Gregarious Ener-

getic Educated Kid(GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot’s drums to locate things

around the countryside.

It soon became known as God’s Own Official Guide

to Locate Everything(GOOGLE).

That is how it all began. And that is the truth.

With thanks to Bob for this contribution; Ed

New Views of the Earth at NightThe night is nowhere near as dark as mostof us think. In fact, the Earth is never reallydark. And we don’t have to be in the dark

about what is happening at night anymore

either. — Steven Miller, atmospheric scientist,Colorado State University

The night side of Earth twinkles with light. The first thing to stand out is the cities.“Nothing tells us more about the spread of

humans across the Earth than city lights,” as-

serts Chris Elvidge, a NOAA scientist who

has studied them for 20 years.
