President’s Message: Lorna Hannett MSA

May 2016

Here it is May already, and another exhibition has come

and gone. What a show it was! This year’s artwork was

superb, as was the gallery that held it. The opening was

packed with people, both artists, and art-lovers alike. The

Arizona Sonora Desert Museum/Ironwood Gallery, and

staff were wonderful, providing good food, and drink.

They also provided some of the creatures from their zoo collection, some

snakes, and birds, for everyone to see and photograph. Thank you to Holly

Swangstu, Director of the Art Institute / Ironwood Gallery, and all the staff

involved in putting on this wonderful event.

All in all it was the best attended weekend of workshops in our history with

60 members attending. I want to thank the presenters: Ginger Gehres and

Rodman, Paul Hopman, John Agnew, Diana Lee, Lori Dunn and Heather

Lara Curtis. You were all so forthcoming, sharing your knowledge and

skills. Thank you.

Thank you also goes to Stephanie Swindell, who was instrumental in the

filming of the workshops. Watch for the DVD coming as soon as she is

finished editing.

I want to send a huge thank you to Cathy Sheeter, our Exhibition Director,

for all her hard work in arranging this fantastic event. She went above and

beyond to make sure everything went smoothly, and according to schedule.

Thank you so much, Cathy.

Last but not least, I want to thank our out-going board members. Jeanmarie

Bostley, has been with us from the start (5yrs!), and done an outstanding

job as Treasurer. Karen Elyse White, has been our hard-working Secretary

for a couple of years, and also worked on the newsletter before that. Ginger

Gehres, also worked on our newsletter, and has been a Member at Large,

and an asset to the board with her wisdom and insight. Thank you ladies

for your invaluable service to our group.

Danna Fruetel, will be taking over as our new Treasurer, and Heather Lara

will assume the role as Secretary. Lori Dunn in a new role as Marketing/

Publicity Director. Good luck in your new roles, ladies, and thank you for

stepping in.

Our next show is less than a year away, in February in Australia! Get busy

scratching and stay tuned for coming details.

Introducing New Board Members:

ISSA’s New Treasurer: Danna Fruetel

I am a self taught artist, and I love to travel, “road trip” is my favorite phrase. Hitting the road with my camera is a joy for me. All of my art is done by using my own personal photo's that I have taken on my many trips. In the past I have been a pencil artist, but this year I have discovered scratchboard art and I really love it. I love high contrast and with scratchboard I can finally get the deep blacks that I have always wanted. My brain also has no problem thinking backwards and bringing out the white in a picture. Personally, I work full time with special needs adults. I am married with two pretty much grown kids. I am reaching the empty nest years, and I'm loving the fact that I can spend hours in my art room, and not worry about what the kids are doing. They are both in college and are working. Art has always been in my life, and it brings me joy. I hope it brings you joy too. Best of Life to You ...... Danna Fruetel

ISSA New Secretary: Heather Lara

Born and raised in New England, where she developed an appreciation for nature at an early age. She's lived many places since her childhood, now happily resides in Temecula, California with her husband, two young daughters, and too many critters to mention them all. A volunteer job with the Animal Department at the Living Desert in Palm Desert introduced her to a career as a serious artist, when she was hired by the Graphics Department full time. She expanded her resume by working freelance for the American Wilderness Experience, helping them open their zoo from the ground up by creating many of the exhibit graphics. When she moved to Argentina, it was a sharp detour from her rising career path, but she spent her time down there, collecting dogs and honing her craft. She even had her first solo exhibition at the Centro Cultural Fisherton. Though she doesn't have an art degree, the Scientific Illustration classes she attended at the University of California at Santa Cruz helped her develop the techniques she uses now, and her Biology Degree has given her the necessary knowledge of form, and structure to

create the

extremely lifelike depictions of her subjects.

ISSA Director of Marketing: Lori Dunn

Wildlife artist Lori Dunn is quickly becoming one of Canada’s premiere scratchboard artists. Enrolled in painting classes as a child, and encouraged throughout school, it was presumed that she would continue to pursue an artistic career. With a passion and keen interest in animals, however, Lori steered naturally to the sciences. Graduating with a BSc. in Zoology she entered into a 15 year career as a professional zookeeper. These years of experience gave her a deep appreciation for the need to protect habitat and endangered species. After several years as a zookeeper and naturalist, Lori resumed her artistic endeavors, finding a way to combine her artistic ability and her desire to conserve nature. http://www.loridunnart.com/Invertebrates.html. Most of her artworks are accompanied by a narrative serving to educate others on the conservation status of the species, and its importance to our environment. As well, she often donates a percentage of the sale of her artwork to various conservation organizations. As a zookeeper, Lori has worked with a vast array of animals ranging from the tiniest invertebrates to elephants and gorillas. Her special area of interest and knowledge, however, is that of reptiles and amphibians. She continues to educate others on the importance of these creatures in our ecosystems, and hopes that through her art she can break down some of the

misconceptions and phobias people have about snakes, and other maligned species. Lori finds scratchboard allows her the control over detail that she strives for. These black and white clayboard engravings produce works of art with incredible realism and quality of light, and are considered by many artists to be one of the most difficult mediums to master. Lori Dunn's work has been showcased in many museums and galleries in North America. In 2010, the Society of Animal Artists presented her with an award of excellence for her piece "Canine Ancestry". This award is considered one of the top honors in Wildlife Art. She also recently achieved her Master status from the International Society of Scratchboard artists. Lori creates her artworks from Herpworks Wildlife Art studio at her home near Norwood, Ontario where she enjoys spending her free time hiking, kayaking, and photographing wildlife.

“It is with sadness that I report the passing of ISSA associate member Joan Gellatly, after a battle with cancer. She was an avid birder and naturalist, and an accomplished photographer. She was

also a skilled draftsman in a variety of mediums, including Scratchboard.

I was fortunate to meet her in several of my classes taught at the desert museum, and we also went

birding together on one of my visits.

What are you trying to convey in this artwork?

There was a period when I was seeing an article on elephant poaching nearly every day. Several countries were burning or crushing confiscated ivory. Looking at photos of those tusks, all I see are piles of dead elephants; it breaks my heart.

In FUNERAL PYRE, I use the powerful image of a tuskless elephant skull, and a burning pile of tusks, to bring awareness to the fact that the ivory trade will kill off the elephants. The carved tusk at the bottom shows the evolution of elephant hunting.

What is your creative process like?

I go through my reference photos and choose something that strikes me at that moment. Or I come up with an idea, and look for specific things in my references. I use a computer program called Gimp to create a layout, increase the contrast, and convert to black and white.

With scratchboard, after a piece has been started, making significant changes is difficult, so I like to create a nearly finished digital reference to work from.

What do you feel makes your work unique?

I am starting to focus on animals that may not be so well known as elephants, and tigers, for example, but are fascinating in their own way.
