With the spate of chains closing in the pastfew weeks, many a national broadcaster andnewspaper forecast the demise of the highstreet. They are wrong.

The likes of Sharps, Habitat, TJ Hughes andMoben have had their own reasons forclosing and many of their stores were milesfrom a high street. The demise of so manychains in the space of a few days has more todo with rent day than the high street.

Being able to research major purchasesonline has allowed shoppers to find thelowest priced commodity and expose thosestores that cannot offer an alternative reasonto clicking on checkout.

The best performing retailers of late havebeen those that combine online with aphysical presence and something you cannot

get elsewhere – be it product, service orreputation. John Lewis, for example, is seeingrunaway online sales. Like many independentretailers, the chain’s success is built on serviceand reputation – the things everyone shouldbe reinforcing as rivals go to the wall.

Rather than the empty high streetimagined, it is increasingly looking like thefuture will keep a large market share forindependents with only a few major retailersper sector.

Habitat’s demise brought back memoriesof the end of Woolworths. My local branchwas packed as the closing down sale began,with shoppers saying it was a shame butmaking positive noises about the reducedprices. The same shoppers who probablyhadn’t set foot in the store previously. And asever staff were rarer than a BritishWimbledon winner.

Gloves on for Carlo deliveries: Cavendish Upholstery is to introduce what it says is afirst for a UK upholstery manufacturer. For its bestselling Carlo (pictured) it will offernext day direct home delivery with a two-man white glove service, including deliveryto the consumer’s room of choice and packaging removal, from 1 August.

Carpetright saw its underlyingoperating margin almost halve in thepast year in the UK and Republic ofIreland. Sales fell by 4.9% to £404.5min the year to 30 April while underlyingoperating margin dropped from 6.2%to 3.6%.

The company says the sales decline‘has been predominantly in carpet,where the proportion of cut lengthbusiness has continued to increaserelative to the pay and take roll stock’.

But, it says, taking the year as awhole, the vinyl business also fell back,although in the final quarter this wasat a lower rate, assisted by new linesand product specific advertising.

‘Sales of laminate/wood categoriescontinued to decline, although recentdevelopments in the manufacturingprocess are now delivering animproved product. We believe thesecategories could provide an area ofgrowth in the coming year, supportedby the strength of our value andservice proposition,’ says Carpetright.

Bed sales rose 30% and now makeup £20.6m of sales, with 40 moredepartments planned, increasing thenumber to 278.

The growth in online productresearch means fewer stores thanexpected will be needed. Leases on 94of its 559 stores are due to expire in

the next five years, which is likely tosee an acceleration of Carpetright’sstore size reduction and closure plans.

Its website now attracts 60,000unique visitors a week and generates700 sample requests and 500appointments.The company isinvesting in call centre staff to followup leads and convert enquiries.

Group sales fell by 5.8% to £486.8mwith pre-tax profits dropping from£22.3m to £6.6m. No final dividendwill be paid. Although no update wasgiven on current trading, Lord Harris,executive chairman says: ‘I see norespite from the challengingenvironment over the next year.’

‘No respite’ as Carpetright’ssales fall and margins halve

ScS set to add carpets to its offerUpholstery chain ScS is to introduce flooringdepartments to its 97 stores from September.

Following comprehensive research into what itscustomers want, ScS found that most peopletypically replace both their sofas and carpets atthe same time.

‘It seemed logical to bring both purchasestogether under one roof,’ says David Knight, ScSchief executive.

‘It’s brilliant news for the customer as it makesthe buying decision so much easier, and fantasticnews for us,’ he says.

It is understood the chain has spoken to ahandful of carpet suppliers about mid-rangeproducts.

Profits up at DFS despite sales slipUpholstery chain DFS increasedunderlying profits by 3.1% to £56.2mdespite sales falling by 0.7% to £486m inthe nine months to the end of April.

The chain says it has agreed leases oneight further stores, which will open fromAugust.

‘The modest decline in sales reflects asoftening of overall consumer spendingduring early 2011. However despite thissales, including VAT, remain ahead of the39 week period last year by 1.3%,’ saysIan Filby, DFS chief executive.

‘The [new] stores represent the first

phase of our plan to bring DFS withinreach of all significant customer baseswithin the UK.’

The store rollout programme isexpected to deliver a target ofapproximately 20 additional stores byJuly 2013, says Filby.

More layoffs at bed firmsThree bed manufacturers – Cumfilux, Sealy and Airsprung –are restructuring in response to market conditions, a monthafter Horatio Myer made 70 staff redundant.

Cumfilux says its Dudley, West Midlands factory will see aphased closure by September with production moving tothe Rochester, Kent factory used by sister brandsSleepeezee and Nestledown. About 70 staff work at theDudley unit.

Some 30 jobs are set to go at Airsprung, with 25 factory

and five office positions likely to be made redundant.Sealy is looking to reduce its workforce by 40, about 10%.

The firm says it delayed a decision for as long as possible,recently introducing four-day weeks and shutdowns, butconcluded job cuts were in the firm’s long-term interest.

Separately, John Cotton is to launch a Sealy brandedcollection of bedding products. The agreement will also seethe bed firm receive priority access to John Cotton’s zonedAirstream technology to incorporate into its mattresses.

Furniture firms Starbay and Halo have called off negotiations over apartnership that would have seen Halo take a minority stake in Starbay.

Jean Mouret, Starbay founder and chairman, and Tim Oulton, Haloowner, said calling a halt to the talks was an amicable decision which leftboth companies open to pursue other opportunities.

‘There is no particular reason other than the fact the two companies had other opportunities they wanted to pursue,’ says Mark Hafer, Starbaypresident.

‘The two owners have a very amicable relationship and a great deal ofregard for each other, and I am sure we will continue that amicablerelationship. But at this point there were just other opportunities to pursueother than a joint venture agreement.’

Metro drops VictoriaThe Metro flooring buying group has removedVictoria Carpets from its own label offer andrebate scheme in the wake of the manufacturer’smove to supply Tesco (Interiors Monthly, June).

At the group’s AGM last month, its membersvoted unanimously to remove Victoria products.

‘Our members want to send a clear message toVictoria, and any other supplier who may beconsidering similar schemes, that dealing with the public direct is not acceptable under anycircumstances,’ says David Kipping, Metro chiefexecutive.

Victoria supplied Metro with 21 ranges and wasits fifth largest carpet supplier last year.

Tescocarpets.com offers nine ranges from£13.99-£24.99 per sqm and the exclusive rangesare being sold through a Victoria subsidiary,Carpets@Home, which is responsible for service.

Victoria declined to comment other than to saythis is Tesco policy until the venture is up andrunning when it will be taken under Tescoownership.

The future of four interiors companies is in doubtafter HomeForm moved to appoint an administrator.Fitted bedroom chain Sharps, Moben Kitchens,Kitchens Direct and Dolphin Bathrooms have acombined 160 showrooms directly employing some1,300 staff alongside 1,500 self-employed fitters anddesigners.

A pre-pac deal is likely for Sharps and KitchensDirect as HomeForm says it is ‘close to securing adeal that will safeguard [their] future’. Buyers forMoben and Dolphin were being sought as InteriorsMonthly went to press.

When previously in administration, HomeFormwas bought by investment firm Sun Capital Partners,owner of ScS Upholstery, in April 2007.

TJ Hughes facesadministrationDepartment store chain TJ Hughes wason the brink of collapse for the secondtime in three months as InteriorsMonthly went to press.

The 99 year-old chain, which has 57 stores, said it would appointadministrators after a 19.9% like for likesales drop in the past three months.

Last year it lost more than £10m. Itwas rescued by private equity firmEndless in March for a nominal amount.

The chain has about 4,000 staff.

Long regarded as a retail icon, Habitathas become a brand in a £24.5m dealwith Argos and Homebase parent HomeRetail Group.

Three London branches will beretained: Tottenham Court Road, King’sRoad and Finchley Road, to serve asshowrooms. The other 30 stores are to beclosed. HRG is also buying the rights tothe Habitat brand in the UK and theRepublic of Ireland and its online store.

Administrator Zolfo Cooper says ordersand deposits are safe. The 30 stores havebegun a 20% closing down sale.

HRG is likely to have dedicated Habitatareas in Homebase stores and to sell thebranded products at Argos, as it hasdone with the Hygena and Schreiberbrands.

The chain was bought by Hilco inDecember 2009 with a £45m dowry fromthe Kamprad family, who acquired it in1992 from Storehouse, after it decided itcould not continue with years of losses.

Habitat has long been dogged with areputation for poor customer service,high prices and poor quality that it hasnot been able to shake off.

Victoria looks to newsectors for growthIncreased sales to independents –which now make up 71% of UK sales –insurance replacement sales andentering the polypropylene markethelped Victoria Carpets lift UK profitsby a quarter in the year to 2 April.

It is now looking to new productcategories and supplying John Lewisto deliver growth in 2011.

The manufacturer made no mentionof its tie-up with Tesco as it revealedUK pre-tax profits of £300,000 withsales 9% higher at £25.04m in theperiod.

‘Our business has good channels tomarket in both the residential andcontract sectors. Recognising this,there are now plans to expand theproduct portfolio that we market andsell through these channels and wehave identified several areas ofpotential future growth.

‘Strategies are being developed toaccelerate entry into a wider flooringproduct offer,’ says Alan Bullock,Victoria group md.

He says Victoria hopes to offerretailers the multichannel ecommerceselling platform it has developed ‘inthe near future’.

Bullock says margins are recoveringafter April’s price rise as retailers cometo accept the impact of higher costs ofraw materials and that the insurance

replacement market would underpintrading.

Republic of Ireland stocking andadministration operations were due tobe closed and run from Kidderminsterby the end of June, as it switches to anagency model for its Irish operationsin the face of continuing losses.

‘Looking forward to the newfinancial year in the UK, we havemade a good start to the year but aremindful that the increasing pressureon consumers’ disposable incomesand higher commodity prices willmake overall trading uncertain andtherefore we must be cautious aboutthe outlook,’ Bullock adds.

A leading carpet manufacturer recently told me that his woolbased carpets had increased in price by more than 20% in lessthan a year.

The reduction in numbers of sheep being farmed in recentyears combined with increased demand from China has led toan indefinite spiralling in wholesale wool prices both in the UKand in New Zealand, the two major sources of wool for carpetmanufacturers.

In the short term this has been good news for the farmer, orproducer as they prefer to be termed. The increase in value ofeach fleece has redressed the balance from a position only twoor three years ago when the cost of shearing scarcely coveredthe cost of the fleece produced. Sheep farming can once morebecome profitable.

On the downside however, anecdotal evidence from the retailsector suggests the recent price increases have been so high

and numerous that a wool carpet is being priced out of thepocket of a significant number of consumers – particularlyconsumers with young families.

The older generation grew up with a belief that wool wasbest and aspired to have a wool product on the floor.

But their children have set up home at a time when man-made carpets have significantly improved in practicality andmore specifically in cleanability. It is no longer the poor relationin floorcoverings.

Will the man-made carpet purchaser of today turn into thewool carpet purchaser of tomorrow?

Are we witnessing the beginning of the end of wool as amainstream carpet fibre?

The laws of supply and demand dictate that if the demandfalls and supply remains static then prices in the market will fall.

That may be too late. By that time it may be feared thebuying pattern of the UK consumer may have changed forgood.

Just at the time when the sheep farmer thought he’d neverhad it so good.

Carlo Colombo’s CV reads like a Who’s Who of the interiorsindustry with designs for the likes of Poliform, Nube, AntonioLupe and Ego Design.

His work for Arflex shows the continuing development of hisstyle since he was first employed by Cappellini – designing theArchimede bed – soon after graduating from Politecnico diMilano in 1993, where he later taught.

Inspired by mountains, the backrest of the K2 creates aprotective barrier and demarcates the space where thecushions, soft like a big cloud, offer relaxation. The backrest isavailable in two heights – 90cm and 101cm – and modular unitsare available allowing the user to decide their configuration.Seat cushions are foam and goose down while the backcushions are goose down. The backrest is available in leatherand fabric with stitch detailing and cowhide with zip detailing.

The Cocca armchair is the synthesis between hard and soft:with the polished plastic frame, available in white, red andblack, contrasting with the comfort of the cushions.

Buying patternsPatterned carpet is enjoying an uplift thanks to morecontemporary designs, easy maintenance and lower prices

Not so long ago patterned carpet was threatening to become aniche product as consumers rejected its traditional styling infavour of plain designs or hard flooring that was easier tocoordinate with sofas and curtains. In recent years the sectorhas successfully reinvented itself, garnering increased credibilityand shopper appeal.

Birger Karlsson, Lano Carpets UK and Republic of Ireland salesmanager, says patterned carpet has become more popular as itis no longer limited to more affluent home owners.

Traditionally, patterned carpet was the territory of expensiveaxminster creations, often in 100% wool. But during the pasttwo years, as pattern became a more central trend in the home,carpets became available that deliver both pattern and value.

Lano’s wilton collection features floral and geometric patternswith natural colour palettes to appeal to a wide audience. Butrather than wool, 100% polypropylene is used bringing ease ofmaintenance and cost benefits.

‘Patterned carpet is very much in vogue and we wanted tomake sure that retailers could answer this demand with a carpetthat keeps value firmly in mind,’ says Karlsson. ‘After all, not ���

everyone has pockets deep enough to afford pure woolaxminsters, yet this doesn’t mean they should miss out.’

For Jeremy Wilson, Ulster Carpets retail sales director,pattern’s return has been a longer affair.

‘The past 10 years has seen a widespread reinvention ofpatterned axminster. Pre-1990 the market was very muchtraditional patterned carpet but in the 1990s open groundstyles emerged and became popular. In the past decade a wide variety of styles have emerged. Traditional designs withmodern colouring like our Anatolia, Ariana and Kazan usingheather/berber yarns were successful as were morecontemporary tonal designs like our Organza/Hopsack andOrissa.’

He says in recent years tonal designs have remained popularbut in earthy and natural tones. More contemporary floral anddamask styles have also done well, as have modern plaids andtartans.

‘Environmental awareness of consumers is also rising and thisis becoming a factor when designing new ranges. There is nowa wide variety of styles and colourings on offer – no one

style predominates and all current Ulster Carpets patternedproducts continue to hold their own.’

Richard Lawrence, Axminster Carpets group head ofmarketing, says pattern or colour should be bold but definitelynot together.

He says the use of over-scale refreshes and revitalisestraditional patterns but with less intense colouration carpetscan extend their appeal, both in terms of consumer numbersand their ability to provide a permanent canvas forredecoration.

‘There is no doubt that large scale prints and rich vibrantcolours have appeared in force on soft furnishings, but as amore permanent commodity, carpet is less throw away andconsumers are likely to opt for a reserved choice here morethan anywhere else. Think subtle neutral tone-on-tone ratherthan brash clashes,’ he explains.

Bold tones too can be patterned, but as the colour does thetalking patterns tend to be less fussy and more contemporary.

Lawrence says: ‘Designs such as Axminster’s Salcombe Striatacan work in really rich colours such as red, bringing acontemporary stance through the use of a staccato lineardesign.

‘These patterns tend to see carpet as the statement piecewithin the room and decor is often toned down in order to givebalance.

‘While pattern trends are as much regional as anything else,there has certainly been a move towards it and home ownersare a lot more willing to take a leap of faith and try patternedcarpet.’

carpet because it was good for the environment. Hammond adds that Lanève branded carpets go beyond the

natural benefits of wool as they are certified as being producedfrom sustainable and socially responsible produced wool.

Lanève demonstrates WoNZ’s commitment to the increasingimportance of traceability and provenance. Green issues arehigh on the consumer agenda and Hammond says thiscollection ticks all the boxes for the environmentally consciouscarpet buyer while providing a strong sales tool for retailers.

‘We are committed to supporting high quality independentretailers and they and the Lanève collection are the perfect fit –a high quality, authentic product sold by professional andknowledgeable retailers where product knowledge andpersonal service are at a premium,’ says Hammond.

Wools of New Zealand is poised to introduce the first traceablecarpet collection, Lanève. The 100% wool carpets are a uniquecollaboration with Brockway, Tollgate and Ulster Carpets in theUK, and is set to provide independent retailers with a powerfulsales proposition.

With 100% ethically produced wool, the carpets are the mostsustainable and environmentally friendly on the market,according to WoNZ, and the wool used is fully traceable back toidentifiable farmers at source.

The farmers concerned adhere to strict codes of practicecovering animal welfare, land management, farming practicesand environmental standards, all of which are independentlyauthenticated.

In keeping with the premium concept, Lanève will only bepromoted through an exclusive network of selected highquality independent retailers to be known as Premier Partners.Initially the range will go to 250 outlets but this is set toincrease. Retailers will receive a standalone lectern, POSmaterial and a consumer promotion.

‘The introduction of the Lanève collection comes at a timewhen environmental issues are playing an increasinglyimportant role in the purchase decision and demonstratesWoNZ’s commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly carpets,’ saysDavid Hammond, WoNZ European market manager.

This month will see Frank Hudson seriously re-enter the diningmarket for independent retailers with three collections inspiredby its bedroom ranges.

For several years Frank Hudson has, with great success,focused on the bedroom market. But it never really left thedining sector, providing several bestselling ranges for JohnLewis, and putting its toe back in the market in 2010 with Spirefollowing the success of the bedroom range.

Last year was a record year for the company and with 2011already ahead of forecast, James Hudson, Frank Hudsondirector, is confident the new ranges will strengthen and widenits customer base.

‘We’ve nailed our colours to the mast as far as bedrooms goand proven to people we are the kings of bedroom in ourmarketplace. Now we’d like to remind people we’re kings ofdining,’ he says.

‘We’ve always had dining, we do two very successfulcollections for John Lewis, one of them does £6m a year. Theindependents don’t realise it as for the past seven or eight yearswe have focused on bedroom. Dining has got swept away withno value in it, with everybody doing blond oak from Chinabased on price. We decided we didn’t want any of that andsteered away from it.’

Hudson predicts a rise in dining sales thanks to the recessionand an increase in community spirit.

‘Now there is almost a social change in the way people think.The recession has made more people stay at home andentertain, rather than go out to restaurants. We think familydining – rather than people eating in different rooms – and asense of community, is coming back,’ he says.

The company also plans to introduce an upholstery collectionin 2012.

‘We’re not trying to be something to all men but we aretrying to give people a whole rounded experience of what weoffer. For retailers who have a large number of our bedroomdisplays they’d have to take one off to put a new one in. They’lltake the dining range and say: “We have customers who loveyour brand so we’ll have the upholstery as well.”

‘We’re always looking for new customers but when we havereally good ones we build on them,’ says Hudson.

The first of the dining ranges, Parlour Pine, due to belaunched at the Manchester Furniture Show, has takeninspiration from the Vintage Provencal Pine bedroom collectionlaunched earlier this year, with an opulent yet casual feel.

In a choice of mahogany or mindi ash is the Victorian range,that features balloon back chairs for added impact.

The Monastery collection features an angular design and ismade from oak with knots and splits, and includes a refectorytable.

‘The heavy use of white during theboom years will continue to diminish andinstead wood grain juxtaposed withblock colours will bring warmth back tointeriors. Limed, white or bleached porewood surfaces still allow for light, freshand airy interpretations and the softenedgrain aids integration with statementcolours,’ says Duddle.

D6596 Swiss Elm Light follows thecoastal decorative trend and has beenpaired with the uni-colour U7179 LightBlue, a subtle grey with a gentle hint ofsky blue. The effect is a contemporarylook that still manages to embrace thetraditional grace and rustic origins ofcoastal wood with a nostalgic touch forsand, sea and salted air.

‘The economic forecast will continueto drive the desire for unostentatiousaesthetics. It is a growing need to getback to basics with soft colours andaustere beauty to appeal to both ourheads and our hearts,’ explains Duddle.

A number of the trends sitwithin more classicand vintage ranges.There are the richand contrastinggrains of the D6597Swiss Elm Dark andD8339 WalnutAvellino, along withthe understatedD8311 AfricanWalnut. These classictrends are

reminiscent of English elegance andcraftsmanship.

‘Taking the current craving forunpolished rustic character further, Fresh2 adds D6539 Grey and D6450 GoldOdessa Oak to the Vintage collection.These two trends are warm and liberallyscattered with an intense grain, pips andknots. The vintage trend is aboutreclaimed materials and furniture thathave a natural pure beauty. It is abohemian shabby-chic style, set againstorganic-feeling surfaces, with featureaccessories such as chesterfield seatingand faux fur throws,’ he says.

The use of wood inspired surfaces willcontinue to get bolder and be a majordesign element for flooring, panels andfeature walls. This use of wood grain willbe tempered and broken-up bysubtle, soft and mattuni-colours.

‘Fresh 2 looks to where interior trendswill develop from the current bitter-sweet yearning for nostalgia and vintage;the desire for natural materials, form andtactility; the wish for a more modesthome; and an increasingly family-mindedconsumer who craves unpretentious andwelcoming interiors,’ says Paul Duddle,Kronospan product development andmarketing manager.

The Fresh 2 surface design palette iscomplemented by seven uni-colours –from baby blue tones through thespectrum to olive greens and chocolatebrowns – carefully chosen to balancesolid colour with wood statements.

Rich Santana Oak and blond Fabric Ashhave a rough sawn finish that takes thecurrent trend for tactile, deep, naturaltextures a step further. The surfaces areinspired by the outdoor/indoor trend forunpolished and intimate surfaces thatcan be explored through touch. Theseraw trends can be combined with ultramodern elements.

This is a year for eclecticism on the catwalk and it’s aninspiration coming through in interiors too. Jackie McLoughlin,design director at soft furnishings business, J Rosenthal, parentof the Dream & Drapes, Curtina and now Serene brands, hasindentified seven key trends.

Eclectic ConstructedAn unusual combination of fabrics gives way to the EclecticConstructed look. Print and colour clash with the unexpected toproduce stand-out designs, sure to make a statement. Picturepleats married with polka dots.

PrismSimple geometric shapes drawing on bold, graphic prints inprimary colour blocks. Prism is aimed at those shoppers lookingfor an easy buy, who have a specific colour palette in mind andwant designs to complement their modern bedroom.

Eastern PromiseA theatrical look, EasternPromise puts an emphasis onlustre with fabrics that achievesheen and a subtle metallicbackdrop. The prettiness of thedesigns – featuring Orientalbutterflies and flowers – ismirrored in the colour pallet,with lilac, yellow and silver tonesmaking the overall result bothelegant and liveable.

Floral ArtInfluenced by artists’ brush strokes, painted so loosely that theyappear almost abstract, deconstruction is a key element. Whilelayering materials and then slashing fabrics to reveal thoseunderneath is difficult to replicate on bedding, cushions can beused to showcase this technique to great effect.

Romantic ConstructedThe current nostalgia for the homespun look translates intobedding with vintage detailing such as crochet, lace,embroidery and layering used to create texture and those all-important finishing touches. Again, the delicate nature ofthese designs means they can be more practically tailored fordecorative cushions and accessories.

Scandi InfluencesWhile Prism is likely toappeal to the late teens tomid-30s, Scandi Influencesoffers a more grown-upalternative. A softer take ontraditional Nordic styledesigns feature subtle birdand leaf motifs in a mutedcolour mix.

Glamorous AnimalNot for the fainthearted, this is theresurgence of animalprint – just not as weknow it. Snakeskin,leopard, zebra andplumage all make anappearance but arebrought bang up-to-date with strikingdesign features, suchas dramatic colourwaves.

A pilot scheme in Chile offers work,environmental protection and a dual-labelling first for Kahrs

Kahrs is the first company to commit to anew timber scheme in Chile, enabling itto offer FSC and Fairtrade certifiedflooring while restoring the economy ofthe Curacautin Valley region.

Kährs’ new dual-labelled floors will beavailable from later this year.

Timber stocks have now recoveredsufficiently in the area to help provide asustainable living to local people basedon fair trade and responsible forestmanagement principles.

One of the first regions in Chile to re-establish its native forest, the CuracautinValley has – as part of the pilot – put intoplace responsible forestry regulationsand rights for the indigenous people.

On the initiative of SSC Forestry Groupin Sweden, a sawmill has been built inCuracautin, the local community hasbeen provided with forest education anda group of forest farmers has beenorganised to manage the forestresources sustainably.

The project coincides with the UN’s

International Year of Forests, intended toraise awareness of sustainablemanagement, conservation anddevelopment of all types of forests.

Prior to depletion of timber stocks,1,000 employees and their families weredependent upon the valley’s formersawmill, which was constructed in 1938.

Forest mismanagement led to large-scale unemployment, landscapealterations, changes in water flow, thedestruction of wildlife habitats andnegatively affected the livelihoods of theMapuche people.

Companies having both FSC andFairtrade certification will provideincentives, including market access, fairpricing and the Fairtrade Premium. Inturn, this will provide additional funds toinvest in social, economic anddevelopment projects, benefitting localfarmers, forest and sawmill workers, aswell as local communities.

‘We’re proud to be the first company tosupport this initiative. The project

demonstrates that the land has morevalue as a working forest, rather thanother non-sustainable alternatives. Ourhope is that we can help alleviate povertyand restore biodiversity by offering thefirst flooring made of FSC-Fairtradecertified wood in the world,’ says PerSkårner, Kahrs ceo.

‘Moving forward, we very much hopethat other companies that share ourcommon values of respect for nature andpeople, will partner up with us in thisimportant corporate social responsibilityproject.’

Meanwhile, the company has receivedFSC certification for 13 wood floors: eightoak floors from its Original and Linnearanges and all sports floors from itsActivity range, available in a choice ofwood species. Within the EuropeanNaturals collection, rustic Oak Ardenneand Oak Hampshire have receivedcertification, along with even grainedOak Verona and Oak Siena from theOriginal range.

Soft opulenceLuxury, environmental credentials, softness and naturalnessin material and design stood out at this year’s show

Four main trends emerged at fabric showProposte: natural materials, softness oftouch, further evidence of moreenvironmentally friendly products, andluxury.

Linen, wool, silk and cotton werewidespread with linen predominant,often combined with synthetic fibres toachieve increased sheen or practicality.

Thanks to sophisticated finishingtreatments, these linen fabrics were softto the touch, falling well for curtains, andsmooth when used in upholstery fabrics.Even in heavier weights featuring analmost rustic bulkiness or texturedweave, these linen textiles never losttheir softness.

For softness of touch wool and silkwere important. When used in curtainsthey imparted a strong character to theroom creating a desire for a cosy,comfortable home.

Natural reoccurred in prints andcolours, with micro-florals thatresembled graffiti; large arabesque-likeswirls; very fat or very thin stripes;sinuous, wave-like patterns; and neatlyelegant geometric shapes.

Though all the colours of the spectrumseemed to be present, it was the yellows– in shades from moon to mustard – thatleft the strongest impression.

Reds ranged in shades from garnet topink to magenta and blues from royal to

midnight to sky blue. While fuchsia was popular thanks to its ability to giveoff a sense of warmth and cheer, theshow witnessed the emergence of the green palette for its capacity torepresent the infinite hues of thevegetable world.

Natural hues were widespread inshades of beige from ivory to brown, butalso white and pale yellow.

Decorations were richer and moreextreme in collections designed for theEast European market, where showydecor is in high demand.

seek ornamentation reminiscent of thelifestyle once enjoyed by emperors andnobles.

Fabrics featured embellishments suchas glistening metallic drop wires andembroidery adorned with mother-of-pearl.

Certain upholstery and curtain fabrics, which had gold threads runningthrough their warp and weft, weredesigned to create instant shimmeringeffects and make quick colour changeswhile heat-shrink thread conferred athree-dimensional appearance to flatfabrics.

Next year’s show takes place from 8-10May.

The latest styles make cushioned vinyl suitablefor areas other than kitchens and bathrooms

Coming out of the kitchen

What’s the first thing that springs to mind at the mention ofvinyl flooring? For many the answer will be the bathroom orkitchen, because for so long it has been the destination for allbut a fraction of vinyl sales.

But this is changing with the product making headway intoother rooms as style matches its practicality.

‘Before the latest generation of cushion floors, thefloorcovering had a reputation as a practical offering, perfectfor use in bathrooms, kitchens and anywhere exposed toregular attack from dirt and moisture. Few home ownersreally considered cushion flooring as a cutting edge stylishproduct with great performance characteristics. It was a greatpractical choice and little else,’ says Caroline Wille, Avenueproduct manager.

But she says this state of affairs has changed with cushion flooring beginning to gain a reputation as a

floor that can deliver style as well as practicality.She cites Avenue’s Precious Metals collection to highlight

just how far vinyl has developed. ‘Rather than simply replicating wood or stone, we are free

to add extra elements that take the popularity of naturalmaterial and twist it, adding extra touches that lift the designand give the floor its unique take on style,’ she says.

It has taken wood, stone and mosaic designs and liftedthem with a palette that is on-trend and different from thenorm, she says.

‘The Natural Look and Feel surface lifts the decor to a newlevel of realism, while shimmering colours, beginning withsoft silver tones, through gold to weathered bronze shades,add an air of quiet sophistication,’ adds Wille.

WIF winners crownedFour of the furnishing industry’s topfemale entrepreneurs were honoured atthis year’s Women in Furnishing (WIF)awards, organised by the FurnishingIndustry Trust and sponsored by Willis &Gambier and the Manchester FurnitureShow.

Teresa Reaney, Furniture Origins UKhead of sales and marketing, won theMost Promising Newcomer award. Thejudges said her dedication and relentlesshard work for Furniture Origins UK hadhelped take the company through atough economic climate to become amajor industry player.

Jodi Schofield, Burgess Beds salesdirector and Louise Boyland of WendyShorter Interiors, were finalists.

Businesswoman of the Year went toJessica Alexander, National BedFederation executive director. The judgessaid she had driven the organisation

forward and her inspiring campaignssuch as National Bed Month and theannual Bed Show, have helped maximiseawareness and increase membershipconsiderably.

Gillian Finch, Carpenter national salesmanager and Natalie Rawson, Furniture123 commercial director, were finalists.

Winner of the Inspirational Woman/Women of the Year category was KateHardcastle, Insight with Passion partner.The judges said she has been theinspiration behind many initiatives andprojects including her own successfulcharity, Dream Girls. Judges felt she hadpassion and drive and her great sense ofsocial responsibility had seen her worktirelessly for many charities.

The Lifetime Achievement Award waspresented to Margaret Miller,

Knightsbridge Furniture chairman, byLord Kirkham, DFS founder.

Recognised for her lifelong career inthe industry, the judges felt she was astrong, talented natural leader. She brokeall traditions when she was installed asthe first Lady Master of the WorshipfulCompany of Furniture Makers in 2008.

Paying tribute to Miller, Kirkham said:‘Margaret is a strong Englishwoman anda shrewd Yorkshirewoman too – which inmy view is a double rollover jackpot inthe lottery of life.

‘She needed all the advantages shecould get to succeed in this maledominated industry she so dearly loves.The essential steel in her character issuperbly disguised by her elegant anddignified appearance combined with herwarm and easy manner. I wholeheartedlybelieve she deserves this award for herlifetime of work, influence andcommitment to the industry.’

Hole lot of money for charityThe 17th Big Shots charity clay pigeon shootingevent cast aside economic thoughts and raised£45,000 for the Furnishing Industry Trust.

Some 43 teams took part in the day, sponsoredby Stately Interiors and Amazing Retreats,followed by a lunch and presentation sponsoredby Furniture Village.

Hot shots of the day included John Dunn ofSherwood Foresters who won Top Gun (Male) with75 points; Tracey Riddington from team LostSamurai/Kyoto Futons once again took Top Gun(female) with 64 points; while the Top Team awardwent to Sherwood Foresters (Mark Webster,Andrew Sheldon, John Dunn and David Dye) with383 points. Niels Laurents (Actona) and RussellJones (Caxton Cavaliers) shared the men’s WoodenSpoon with 11 points, while Sue Killick (SureShots) took home the women’s version, despitescoring 25 points.

Hat trick: David Cormack,Cormar Carpets marketingdirector, completes a hat trick ofawards receiving the MetroSupplier of the Year award, forthe 12th year, from the group’schairman Martin Ward. Itreceived the same award fromFlooring One and was namedBury Employment, Support andTraining’s Employer of the Year,for providing work experiencefor young adults with disabilitiesor learning difficulties.
