ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL

The Trusteeship Council has five members: China, France, Russian Federation, UnitedKingdom and the United States. With the independence of Palau, the last remaining UnitedNations trust territory, the Council formally suspended operation on 1 November 1994. Bya resolution adopted on that day, the Council amended its rules of procedure to drop theobligation to meet annually and agreed to meet as occasion required—by its decision orthe decision of its President, or at the request of a majority of its members or the GeneralAssembly or the Security Council.

INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE

The International Court of Justice has 15 members, elected by both the General Assemblyand the Security Council. Judges hold nine-year terms.
