What is Interoperability?

• Ability to operate in synergy in theexecution of assigned tasks.

• Capability of diverse systems andorganizations to share data,intelligence and resources.

• Easy compatibility with future andalready existing platforms and C4Isystems.

Why is it important?

Interoperability serve as the “glue” for unmanned systems: a commonmethod of communicating between different technologies.

• Reduce development and integration time: eliminates customimplementations and speeds integration since technology is proven.

• Provide a framework for technology insertion: new technology canbe easily integrated, expanding the type of functions that the currentsystems can perform in the field.

What is the current situation?

• Standardization for Unmanned Systems interfaces:• Different standards, addressing specific domains, place emphasis

on different types of data:• STANAG 4586: data from payloads onboard UAVs,• JAUS: command and control (C2) of heterogeneous UxV,• MOOS: inter- and intra-system standardization for UMS,• etc.

• Unmanned Systems in SAR operations:• Some Unmanned Systems are starting to be used.• No standard of reference is now in place.

How is ICARUS targeting interoperability?

• Use of existing standards for key system interfaces (C2, payloads, etc).

• Seamlessly integrated communication network.

• Single standardized Command and Control independent of each platform.

But ICARUS also considers interoperability in the operational scenario:

• Definition of roles, tasks and responsibilities.

• Modes of operations.

• Levels of Interoperability (LOI).

What is next?

• ICARUS will demonstrate the use ofinteroperability standards in Search andRescue operations with UnmannedSystems. End users will be invited.

• The International Search & Rescuecommunity will benefit from thisexperience and, hopefully, follow upwith the challenge to draft the standardof interoperability in SAR operationswith robotics.
