Inca urban planning. Days 4-8 Inca Trail/Machu Picchu/Cuzco
Slip into hiking boots and trek the iconic trail that once linked the
Inca Empire. The ancient paths wind around mountains, across
high plateaus, through dense cloud forest and past temple ruins.

Warmiwanusca (Dead Woman’s Pass). Camp out in the evenings
under a blanket of stars. On the final day of the trek, climb the steps
to Intipunku - the Sun Gate - and watch Machu Picchu appearing
through the mist. Rest for a moment before heading down into
the site to further uncover the secrets of the mysterious ruins. This
is an unforgettable experience to be savoured. Return to Cuzco
and perhaps visit to the Aldea Yanapay restaurant to support local
underprivileged children - eat up for a good cause!

walking tour of this city shrouded in history. In free time, why
not hit the intriguing Monasterio de San Francisco to explore
the dark tunnels that lead to an eerie underground cemetery?

inhabited dwellings in South America. Days 4-5 Cuzco Hop on
a local bus, head back to Cuzco and make use of the included
access to the impressive archaeological sites of Sacsayhuaman,
Qenqo and Tambomachay, on the outskirts of Cuzco. Day 6

After a challenge? For the ultimate travel buzz, trek to mystical Machu Picchu. See the Inca Trail trip above for more information.
The Inca Trail is a demanding but rewarding trek that combines ancient ruins, mountain scenery, lush cloud forest and rich subtropical jungle. For many people, it is the highlight of Peru, if not South America.
the trekThe 45 km (28 mile) trek is usually covered in four days, arriving at Machu Picchu on the morning of day four. The trek is rated moderate and any reasonably fit person should be able to complete the route. However, hiking uphill (and downhill!) can be challenging, so the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it. While your group leader may not accompany you on the trek, you will be joined by a local guide and supported by a team of porters leaving you with only a small daypack to carry. Given the weather and altitude, hiking conditions are ideal during the drier months of May to September. October to April is cooler with more rainfall and is also less crowded. The classic Inca Trail is closed in February for regeneration. At that time, an alternative trekking route will be hiked.
the nitty grittyA permit is required to hike the classic Inca Trail and there are only 500 available per day. Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s very important to book well in advance (four to five months before departure). When booking an Intrepid trip that includes the Inca Trail, you are required to supply the number and full details of the passport you intend to travel on. We endeavour to purchase your permit within four days of receiving all necessary information and relevant payment.
VERY IMPORTANT: Since permits are non changeable and non refundable, please consult with Intrepid before changing your passport details post-booking (change of name, passport number, etc.) as this may result in your permit being invalidated.
If we can’t secure Inca Trail permits you can:
a. Change to another one of our fantastic trips or choose a different departure date, without incurring any Intrepid penaltiesb. Hike an alternative Inca trek, which includes a day trip to Machu Picchuc. Stay two nights in Cuzco, then travel to Aguas Calientes by train and spend the day exploring Machu Picchu before returning to Cuzco
Not the hiking type? You can opt out of trekking the Inca Trail on any Intrepid trip. Simply let us know at time of booking and the above option ‘c’ will be arranged for you at no extra cost. Late booking fees apply if this change is requested after the Inca Trail permit is confirmed.
responsible trekkingIntrepid Travel is passionate about sustainable and responsible travel and this is particularly important on the Inca Trail. We are committed to paying a fair wage and supplying the proper equipment and resources to our porters and guides. We are also involved in promoting practices that contribute to the long-term sustainability of the environment, culture and local communities.

Galapagos Island AdventuresUntouched by human civilisation until the early 19th century, and instrumental in the formulation of Darwin's Theory of Evolution, the Galapagos Islands remain a natural paradise teeming with flora and fauna. A voyage to this unique archipelago is surely one of the highlights of any visit to Latin America.
ISLA SANTA FE
Home to a colony of sea lions, it's possible to swim with these magnificent animals. You can also
explore mangroves and hike through a forest of prickly pears to the cliffside domain of land iguanas.
ISLA ESPANOLA
This island is a nesting site to what is virtually the entire world population of waved albatross – more
than 12,000 pairs. They can be seen here during nesting season from April to December. Ruggedly
beautiful, this island is home to large numbers of bird species, marine iguanas and sea lions.
ISLA FLOREANA
In the 18th century, a barrel was placed here to be used as a post office. Passing ships would stop to
collect mail destined for ports on their itineraries and crews would deliver the mail by hand. It’s still
possible to post a letter home! Here, visit Punta Cormorant, home to a jade-green volcanic beach.
ISLA SANTA CRUZ
The most populated of all the islands, Santa Cruz is also home to the Charles Darwin Research
Station. Visit a nursery that cares for young tortoises until their shells have hardened.
ISLA RABIDA
On the dark red, volcanic sands of Isla Rabida, there are sea lions and birdlife galore, as well as
pelicans nesting among bushes. A trail leads to a lagoon, where flamingos are often seen wading.
ISLA BARTOLOME
Amid stark volcanic landscapes you’ll see crabs, pelicans, doves and even the rare Galapagos
penguins. The panorama from the summit is one of the best in the islands.
ISLA NORTH SEYMOUR
Seymour is home to the region's largest frigatebird colony and there may be an opportunity to see
the elaborate mating ritual of this species.
ISLA SAN CRISTOBAL
Home to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galapagos. View incredile wildlife such as
frigatebirds, sea lions and turtles - and the largest freshwater lake in the archipelago, Laguna El Junco.
ISLA ISABELA
The biggest island in the archipelago, Isla Isabela boasts the largest tortoise population in the
Galapagos. Here, hike volcanic landscapes and view convict-built remnants.
ISLA GENOVESA
Home to colonies of rare bird species and sea lions, Isla Genovesa provides plenty of opportunity to
spot exotic wildlife. The cove of Darwin Bay is also a great location for snorkelling.
ISLA BALTRA
The gateway to the Galapagos, Isla Baltra is home to the main airport of the Galapagos Islands and is
used as a launching pad when travelling to other islands in the region.
