My mother gave me the name Susan Philson because I am named after my aunt Susan Jackson. I am 11 years old and five feet tell. I have long brown hair and blue eyes. I like to were a brown dress with a

white bonnet on my head.

I have three sisters named Willow, Janet, and Kate and I also have two brothers named Thomas and Williams. My mother’s name is Mary and my father’s name is Bo.

I live in a small white house that has a big red chimney. The land my mother and father bought has a red barn to house the

cattle. We have 3 acres of land to plant corn and squash. In our house there are three rooms in it . We have a downstairs and a

upstairs. The downstairs is the kitchen and the main room and upstairs is the bedroom.

I like to wear a brown dress that my mother had made for me but only for special occasions. I also like to wear a

dress that my great grandma had made for me it is black and it comes down to my ankles. I have to wear a bonnet so I can

look as pretty as my mother.

My father is a farmer for a living. He farms on the three acres we own. My

father is a great farmer when it comes to planting squash and tomatoes. He sell s

them in town at the market. He trades his fruits and vegetables for utensils to use on

the farm.

My mother is a candle maker. My mother has been making candles for thirteen years. It

is a good that my mother is a candle maker because if we were to have run out of candles

my mother can make them in no time. My mother usually makes about fifty candles a day.

I have four chores in less one of my brothers or sisters are sick or gone. I have to sew, wash the

dishes, and do the laundry ,then feed the animals, and help mother prepare dinner or the boys and

father. Once my sisters are done they help me but that is if I am not done with all my chores. My sisters

help me and mother cook for the bays and father.

We played lots of games like tag, red rover some times we just wanted to see who could run faster. My younger

brother Williams and I are the fastest. Sometimes mother and father will run with us but father is the fastest man I have ever seen. My father once ran to the store which is one mile down

the road in only five minutes! I can run that far in ten minutes.

My family mostly eats corn ,bread , and squash four lunch and dinner. For breakfast we eat eggs and bacon and bread. We get eggs from the chickens and bacon from the pigs. We grow the corn and squash in father’s garden. We make our

bread form the wheat father also grows in his fields.

I go to a small one room school house. My school is white and very small. In my school there are eleven kids that go to that school. We

have five rules no hitting, no speaking when the teacher or other students have the floor, no back talking, someone must must have put a

pail of water in the class room by seven ten, and you must wash hands before eating. I like Mrs. Jackson a lot she is my teacher. Mrs. Jackson makes us be prepared four school ,we have to have a rulers

and a fetcher and ink.

When me or my brothers or sisters get punished we have to go out side and find a branch on a tree and father will come whip us with it. Then we have to go in and go to the corner.

My brothers and sisters and I do not get punished a lot. When we do get punished it is because we did not do our chores. We would go into a dark room and sit. I do not get punished a lot,

only once every year.

When someone is sick we care four them by treating them by giving them medicine to help them get better. If they are wounded we go and get a slug and place it on the wound .

We had often used the slug to suck poison out of wounds. Native Americans gave us new medicines to use those that were ill. They give us ground up leaves to make tea. Some

times the medicine dose not help and that so people don’t get better.

Going to church on Sunday is very fun for me. The church is about four miles away from our house. My

family gets up at six o clock every Sunday so we can get freshened up for the day. I wear a long brown dress to

church. We take our horse and buggy to and from church. We usually take my horse Sunshine.

We have many laws in the colony of Pennsylvania. One of the laws stated that everyone, young and old, had to go to

church on Sunday. If you would not attend church you would be locked in stocks. Another law in my colony requires children to

go to school until you are in the tenth grade. If you did not attend school your punishment would be cleaning the chalkboard

and erasers. Stealing was not acceptable in Pennsylvania. Someone that got caught stealing they were hung at the town

square. These are some of the rules in Pennsylvania.
