March 2015

Dear Parents Welcome to this year’s booklet This introductory letter is a little long but you will see we have some important information that we wish to share with you. This booklet contains

your child’s full report

recommendations from the subject teacher

their Year 8 assessment results

a timeline

and finally the choices form that needs to be filled in. You also need to know something about the proposed changes taking place nationally over the next three years. It might be helpful if we summarise some of these for you. They are

This year group will follow new GCSE schemes of work with controlled assessment or coursework disappearing from many subjects. For many courses there isn’t a great change to the content taught in the past, where there is we will keep you informed.

The importance of the group of subjects known as the English Baccalaureate (EBacc for short) is being further reinforced. These subjects will be included in a new school measure (now referred to as Progress 8).

You also need to be aware that from September 2014 students without an A*-C in English and Maths at GCSE will have to continue their study in these subjects post-16.

This list may look daunting but we believe that our three year Key Stage Four programme gives us plenty of time to prepare students so that they can achieve their best. All courses on offer to students this year are fully described in the Choices Booklet. This is available online on Moodle and on our website (both sites have links from the front page). The booklet is available as an e-book, for eaiser online browsing, or as a PDF version which is easier to print.

Core subjects Despite these changes, much remains the same. As you might expect, in Key Stage Four all students will carry on studying English, Maths and Science. They will also continue to have two hours of PE a week and each student will take modules of compulsory RE spread throughout years 9 and 10 delivered through our PDL provision.

English Baccalaureate subjects In addition to the core subjects, other Baccalaureate subjects are Computer Science, History, Geography and a Modern Foreign Language. We require the vast majority of students to take a language and a humanities subject and recommend that all students take at least one subject from this Baccalaureate list.

Choices subjects In their two remaining choices students can consider subjects within Creative Arts, Technology and PE or, of course, additional Baccalaureate subjects. You will find a range of qualifications in these areas including GCSEs, vocational courses at college, BTECs (a GCSE equivalent) and one A/S level. In addition to the Core and EBacc subjects they add the breadth and depth to the diversity of our Key Stage Four curriculum.

Our Recommendations We have made a recommendation for your son’s or daughter’s choices over the next three years. In making this recommendation we are trying to balance a number of factors that I am sure you will also consider important. They are

Student strengths in each of the subjects

The need to have a broad and balanced approach to their subject choices

The importance of giving them the most appropriate qualifications that they will need in the future

Please look at this recommendation carefully and talk to us about it if you feel it does not reflect what is right for your child. Dates for your diary

The publication of the year 8 reports, which includes subject recommendations for KS4 – 20th March 2015.

Our Choices fair for students and parents – 25th March 2015, 5:00 to 7:00pm in the Sports Hall.

Subject presentations for students, made to them within class time- week beginning 21st April 2015.

Parents evenings 21st and 29th April 2015, 5:00 to 7:00pm in Eliot building ( the one with the library).

Students’ one to one review with their tutors, specifically to discuss their choices, in the week beginning 4th May 2015.

Please note that whilst we work hard to provide choice for students and to give as many as we can their first choice, this is not always possible. If not enough students choose a course we cannot run it; in some subjects such as Technology, we cannot run groups above a certain size. Where this happens we will be in touch with you to discuss the best next steps. I hope that you find this information and the process useful. We are always aware of how much detail we have to give you and how challenging this can be, especially for parents who are going through the system for the first time! As you can see we are also managing the changes to the curriculum brought in by the government and will continue to keep you updated on these for your child. As ever, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us if you feel we can help or if you want to discuss in more detail the pathway that we have recommended. Good contacts to choose from are your child’s tutor or Guidance Manager, our Key Stage 3 Manager, Mr Nevola our curriculum deputy, or myself. All responses must be returned by 11th May 2015 at the latest. In the meantime I look forward to the next exciting and challenging part of your son or daughter’s education at Perins School. Yours sincerely

Mrs Bernard Headteacher.

DO:

Talk to the people who know you really well: family, friends, your tutor and subject teachers.

Read all the course information contained within your Pathway so you have a clear idea of what each course involves.

Come to the Choices Fair with your family on 25th March 5-7pm in the Sports Hall.

Come to parents evening on 21st and 29th April in the Main Hall.

Pay attention to all the subject presentations that will be made in your subject lessons.

Think ahead to your future; if you have a career path in mind; be proactive – research what qualifications you need.

Reflect on what you are successful at and what you enjoy.

Speak to your tutor, Mrs Kennedy or Mr Nevola if there is a problem with what you want to choose.

Use all the help available to make the correct choice first time.

If you lose the Choices form which was sent home together with your report, please ask for a replacement copy from the School Office.

DON’T:

Leave your decisions until the last minute.

Make choices based upon what your friends are doing. There is nothing to say you would be in the same class anyway!

Make a choice because you like the teacher you currently have – you may not have the same teacher next year!

Choose a subject because you think it looks “EASY” – there is no such thing as an easy subject; all courses will stretch and challenge you.
