Cheers all around at Noah’s Ark

A big thank you to Mrs Hicks and the “Kats” cheerleading squad for their stunt and poms display last week. After be-ing the audience, the Noah’s Ark children were shown some of the “moves” by enthusiastic and patient squad members. The young ones took the instruction very seriously and were excited about future opportunities as they move into Primary school.

Parenting with Power

Listen to Your Conscience

Scripture of the week: Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible pun-ishment but also because of conscience. Romans 13:5

“Why do you do what’s right?”It’s a fun question to ask children. The common answer

is, “So I don’t get in trouble.” That’s when you can take them to Romans 13:5 which says, “Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.”

Punishment is external. Conscience is internal. So what does that mean for parents?

Good news. God has created inside the heart of your child a conscience as part of the internal motivation sys-tem. The reality is though, the conscience needs to be trained. The conscience can motivate your child to do the right thing when no one is looking. It can help your child be thorough with chores, and take a stand for family values when out with friends.

When trained well, the conscience works along with the Holy Spirit to motivate a child toward mature and re-sponsible behaviour - not just to avoid punishment, but because it’s the right thing to.

Strategy for the week: Deliberately training your child’s conscience will stand by them the rest of their lives. When your child disobeys or does something deliberately wrong, actively discuss how they were thinking and show them what voice they were listening to. Teaching children that God knows best and wants what is best for us gives them reason to obey their conscience. Learning to listen to it is the first step. Like learning an instrument or running a race, if we don’t practise to listen and obey our conscience, it will be-come ineffective.

SecondaryTimeless WisdomI’ve LearnedTimeless wisdom to share with others:

I’ve learned . . . . that the best class-room in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I’ve learned . . . . that when you’re in love, it shows.

I’ve learned . . . . that just one person saying to me, “You’ve made my day!” makes my day.

I’ve learned . . . . that I feel better about myself when I make others feel better about themselves.

I’ve learned . . . . that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I’ve learned . . . . that what we have done for our-selves alone dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.

I’ve learned . . . . that one sincere apology is worth more than all the roses money can buy.

I’ve learned . . . . that words harshly spoken are as diffi-cult to retrieve as feathers in a gale.

I’ve learned . . . . that being kind is more important than being right.

I’ve learned . . . . that you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I’ve learned . . . . that I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help him in some other way.

I’ve learned . . . . that no matter how serious your life re-quires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I’ve learned . . . . that sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I’ve learned . . . . that either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I’ve learned . . . . that money doesn’t buy class.

I’ve learned . . . . that it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I’ve learned . . . . that under everyone’s hard shell is some-one who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I’ve learned . . . . that when you harbor bitterness, happi-ness will dock elsewhere.

I’ve learned . . . . that everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I’ve learned . . . . that men would rather be lost for hours than stop and ask for directions.

I’ve learned . . . . that our background and circumstanc-es may have influenced who we are, but we are responsi-ble for who we become.

I’ve learned . . . . that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

I’ve learned . . . . that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.

There is so much that could be written here. I hope you have enjoyed these few. I am sure you have many other points of timeless wisdom you could add to this list. Why not begin to compile a list of you own to give to children or grandchildren. Why waste the wisdom of years of life lived well.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Re-member God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks.

Rise Up TodayQuote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13Many Christians have lost their imagination and only seek-

ing to survive instead of pushing on to accomplish their vision. Business people, shake off the lethargy! Rise up in who you are in Christ, allow the Holy Spirit to give you fresh hope, vision and determination and do all that God is placing on your heart, that He may be glorified in this place at this time.

In our personal lives, God does not want any of us to live in defeat and despair. No! We are children of the living God. Rise up today and take hold of that for which Christ has laid hold of you.

You can be a successful husband or a loving wife. God has giv-en you the children that you have - He will help you to be a great father or a terrific mother to them. Follow His directions given in the Word of God and be sensitive to His leading - then obey His voice. He desires to see you live an abundant life in every area.

Sport News

Hi everyone,

We will hear a lot about how amazing our students performed at the APS Cross Country from Mr Stephens and James Clark below. I would like to thank both of these guys for doing an incredible job over many months. Their dedication and enthusiasm was a big part of our success this year. I would also really like to congratulate the students that not only came first, or a top 10 place, but all the students that tried their hardest and gave it their all for King’s. You guys are true champions in my eyes and are just as important as all the students that came in the top 10. Without you we would not have been able to achieve the impressive results that we did. King’s is really starting to develop some depth in our sport and I absolutely love it. Keep up the great work and GO KING’S!!!

News from the King’s Locker Room WEEK 7

APS Cross Country NewsPeople are talking! Schools are taking second looks. The news

is; King’s primary has become an APS cross country power house!

On May 23rd, 2012, I was lucky enough to be a part of a very special group of students that has sent shock waves through the APS community. I must admit, it was one of the proudest days of my life as a teacher, watching every single team member rise up and give their all after months of training. Many had been there before, some for the first time, but it was impossible to tell the experienced from the inexperienced as everyone brushed off nerves and went head first into their race with a grin on their face and a look in their eye that hinted at a self belief that can only come from knowing they were ready!

They had one shot at it, and it was obvious they were not going to come away with any doubts - they simply went off!!!!

Just so that you know - this is the best result at cross country ever!

U9 Boys finished 2nd - Shem Lonsdale 5th, Kael Lennox 10th

U9 Girls finished 8th - Holly Stolting 7th

U10 Boys finished 4th - Well Done to Jordan Sergis 2nd

U10 Girls finished 2nd - Congratulations Jasmyne Coventry 1st

U11 Boys finished 6th - Joshua Cameron-McDonald 7th

U11 Girls finished 1st - Congratulations Leah Simpson, coming 1st. A huge well done to: Tiffany Chavez 3rd, Sophia Muller 4th, Tenyka Chapman 8th

U12 Boys finished 5th - Luka Lewis 9th, Jack Castle 10th

U12 Girls finished 3rd - Layla Oxborrow 4th

U13 Boys finished 5th - Bradley Gibson 4th, Zak Young 5th

U13 Girls finished 6th - Well done Erika Chavez 2nd

The students listed above will all receive a movie voucher for coming in the top 10 places for their race. Jazmyne Coventry and Leah Simpson will also receive a voucher for Robina shopping centre for winning their races which is no easy feat. The 11y/o girls team, due to being age champions get to choose a venue to be taken out to for lunch by the sport department as a special team effort reward! Rumours are circulating Max Brenners might be given a work over....

It is hard to only name our top ten finishers when every single runner did extremely well, many finishing just outside the top 10.

Last year we finished 8th in the competition, with our best ever result before that being a fifth (way back in 2008). This is a telling sign things are going in the right direction in the sport depart-ment! We have a vision for sport at King’s and the students are taking us there!

When asked what were some of the highlights from the day were: “when everyone puts 110% into their race and you know they tried their best” Zaneeta Robertson.

Special recognition needs to be given to James Clark, head run-ning and athletic coach for the planning and preparation of the team. We are extremely blessed to have him coaching our teams. Rohan Toll for providing our students with self belief, Jason Grady for making it all possible and our fantastic running coaches who turned up week in week out to help raise the bar for the students at training. Most importantly, the team, who turned out in force every Tuesday and Thursday morning, even during the holidays. All credit for this great result goes to you!

Going from 8th to 3rd is something we should always remem-ber and always be proud of. But being the competitive person that I am and knowing the talent we have, I have my eyes set on taking out 1st place next year. It’s a big ask, a real challenge, but nothing is impossible!

High School, all though the results were less than desirable for your carnival (finishing 8th) there is light at the end of the tunnel and there were some great individual performances.

Congratulations to Dimitee Coventry for winning the 13 y/o girls race! Their is certainly some talent in the Coventry family! A special mention also goes to: Joel Lonsdale for coming 2nd in the 13 y/o boys race and to Brandon Shiel-Butera for coming 9th in the same race. Emily Carey for finishing 7th in the open girls race and Bernard Lierse for finishing 10th in the open boys.

Last year, primary school were in the same boat. Questions were raised like “are we happy being known as the school that always comes last at XC” with the answer being a “no” from every-one. That is where it started and we ALL made a decision to make a change. We can turn things around, just like primary did, but it starts and finishes with you, our students. If YOU want change, WE can make it happen!

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!

Running Club Rant

Sadly, the cross country running club squad training has now come to an end, but what a great end we had. Last Wednesday our school students competed at the annual APS cross country championships, with our primary school students having fantas-tic results. Overall, our school ended up as the 3rd best of the 8 APS schools, which exceeded my original goal of gaining a top 5 placing. So for our primary students to go from 8th last year overall, to gaining 3rd this year, I couldn’t be any more proud with our running club group. It is a clear reflection of all the hard work and dedication you have all had by showing up to training every week. We had a number of students who achieved top 3 placings, they were, Jasmyne Coventry (1st); Jordan Sergis (2nd); Leah Simpson (1st); Tiffany Chavez (3rd); and Erika Chavez (2nd). We actually had more medallists than All Saints, which ended up winning the overall carnival, so that’s another interesting little statistic. And the last notable results was our 11years girls team, who were the overall champion school team for their age group, and were the only age team from our school to achieve this hon-our, and they will now be taken out to lunch as a team next week as a reward. So a huge congratulations to those girls, I can’t wait to join you all for lunch at Robina Town Centre next week.

As for our secondary students, I’m not going to beat around the bush.....we got 8th; in almost every age group overall as a team. We did however have a few great results. Our 13years stu-dents did the best. We had Dimity Coventry gain 1st in the girl’s race, and Joel Lonsdale 2nd in the boys event, but apart from these two students we had no other top 3 placegetters. But to be honest, I had no big expectations for our secondary students as a team, purely for the fact that I never see the vast majority of these students at any training sessions, as well as the attitudes from the majority at our school cross country carnival. I understand that your academic schedules are more hectic, but with proper time management of your studies, there is no reason why you couldn’t make 2x 60min morning sessions a week. I honestly believe we could gain a top 5 result overall next year with our secondary stu-dents, ONLY if we get a better commitment from our students to show up for training. That’s basically it.....look what our primary team achieved. They have gone from last place to third place in only one year, because they worked hard for it, that’s all it takes. But from what I saw from our secondary guys last Wednesday, it is very clear that there must be a culture change within the school in order for them to succeed....they must WANT to succeed in or-der to do so, but until that time, the good results will not come.

Well this will be my last running club newsletter article, but stay tuned as from next week onwards, I will be writing up a weekly newsletter article regarding the Athletics Squad training.

Yours in cross country,

Sport NewsOutstanding Performances

Sophia Muller

Sophia Muller (5H) continues to shine in the sporting arena. After her impressive 4th position at the APS Cross Country car-nival and helping her age group win over all last Wednesday, she then backed up the next day to represent the district team in soc-cer to compete at the regional carnival where they won each of there games. Sophia who played right fullback was very impres-sive and had strong performances throughout the day, so much so that she has now made it through to the South Coast soccer team. A truly outstanding performance!!
