Ben, you know as well as I do thatpolitics has as much to do with whoreaches admiral as anything. You werenever any good at politics. Its oneof the reasons I fell for you.

ADMIRAL PAGESo how much of a pain in the ass isthis CNN thing going to be for me, Ben.

ADMIRAL PAGEThe reporters been in Kodiak for twoweeks. Doesnt sound like shes doinga routine military accident story.

    (beat, then)

Look, Ben, after that Wild West stuntby senior chief Zibriski, we cantafford any more negative exposure uphere. And once the maintenance reportson 6096 are made public...

CAPT. NELSONSo thats why you stuck around, toclean up my mess?

Im sorry...Youre right. This iswrong, I know.

They both begin to straighten their clothes.

CORDWe cant just rush into this again. Not like we did three years ago.

    SIOBHN(embarrassed)

I know, sweetheart. Im awful arentI?...Its only been a little over amonth since Kirk died.

CORDYoure not awful, Siobhn. If anyonesawful here its me. We cant hurt Kirk

    anymore, but Meg...

    SIOBHN(covers)

    Yes, of course, Megan.

He stands. She looks up at him, angelic yet so tempting. She touches his belt and eases her hand further down, caressing him there. It takes everything he has to moveher hand.

  • 8/7/2019 KODIAK 104 Details at Eleven

    9/52

    9.CORD

We cant, Siobhn. I should stopcoming by. At least until things aresorted out between me and Meg.

    SIOBHNI understand, sweetheart.

He goes to the door. She follows. He turns before openingthe door. She stands close, looks in his eyes.

SIOBHNI know waiting is the right thing,Cord...There was always a cloud over usbefore and I dont want to feel thatway again. This time I want to enjoyhaving you all to myself.

She gives him a sweet kiss on the lips and he exits.

    INT. THERAPISTS OFFICE DAY

Cord and his wife Meg McKenna are in a session.

THERAPISTWhy didnt you tell Meg about Siobhn?

Cord seems stumped by the question.

THERAPISTYou and Meg both said you spent yourfirst month together talking aboutvirtually every aspect of your lives. Its how you became convinced that youwere so right for one another. Yeteven after you were married, you neversaid anything about someone who wasclearly a key figure in your life.

Cord looks at Meg, who waits for his answer.

    CORDI dont know.

    Meg sighs, annoyed.

    CORDIm sorry, Meg, it just

    10.MEG

Didnt cross your mind?! Didnt seemimportant?! Or maybe you just forgot?!Yeah, thats it, you forgot!

THERAPISTMeg, remember our ground rules fortoday. Were in a judgment free zone.

    Meg seethes.

THERAPISTCord, I think weve made real progresshere, but this issue of Siobhn is acritical sticking point. Yourrelationship with her - not the affairper se, but your secrecy about your

life together - is a major obstacle torebuilding Megs trust in you.

After a long, tortuous beat he looks at Meg. Finally

CORDMeg... Siobhn and I, we had so muchhistory, so much in common. I nevertalked about her because I felt that ifI did you would feel...intimidated.

Beat. Then it hits Meg. Hard.

    MEG(wounded)

Wow...There it is...finally, after allthese years. Youve never stoppedloving her.

    CORDIts not that simple, Meg.

    MEG

(anger rising)No? It sounds simple to me, Cord. That whirlwind romance we had duringKatrina was just that. Only you didnthave the balls or the brains to see itfor what it really was a long, onenight stand. Now, here we are eightyears, a mortgage, two kids and twoaffairs later, totally screwed!

    11/52

    11.CORD

Youre wrong, Meg. I saw it exactlyfor what it was, a sea change in mylife. Since I was a kid, Siobhn waseverything I thought a woman should be.But then I met you, and you wereeverything she wasnt artistic, passionate, outrageous, outspoken. Youdrank like a sailor and you screwedlike one too. I felt for you in twohours what it took me twenty years tofeel for Siobhn. I just didnt thinkyoud ever believe that I loved youmore. I suppose I never talked abouther because I wanted to forget what shemeant to me.

MEGThat worked out well, didnt it?

    OFF Cord...

    EXT. USCGC THETIS DAY

    12.MJ

I see, yet Operation Polar Bear tookplace in the Chukchi Sea, a region ofthe Arctic Circle thats rarely used bycommercial fishermen during thesemonths because of the extreme danger.

DECKERTwo things to keep in mind: First, ouroperations were limited to coastalwaters off Alaskas northern coast. Most fishing is done in the Bering Seasouth to the Aleutians. And secondly, this was a military operation.

MJBy military do you mean secret?

DECKERNo maam, not secret at all. As youknow, we periodically conduct jointoperations with the U.S. Air Force andNavy as well as with Canadian air andnaval forces. Weve even had operationsin that region with Russian forces.

MJThe Coast Guard reported that theJayhawk helicopter that crashed killingthree crewmembers had a problem withits deicing equipment. Has thatassessment been confirmed?

Decker hesitates, glances at Benz. MJ clocks his move.

DECKERThat was, I believe, the preliminaryfinding. Im not aware if its beenfinalized.

BENZCaptain Nelson can fill you in on thelatest there, Ms. Ashcroft.

Phil has turned the camera to film Lt. Benz speaking.

MJSo I can see Captain Nelson againbefore we wrap up?

    EXT. DOCK PARKING LOT TWILIGHT

While Phil loads gear into a rental car, MJ talks on her

    cell phone.

MJWe just did interviews on the cutterThetis...No, just the usual Coast GuardPR crap. But listen, Al, I have afeeling theres more to the maintenanceangle...Yeah, I interview the commanderof the air station again later today,or tonight or whatever the hell time ofday it is here. Its so confusing.

Phil closes the trunk as Jane gets in the car.

    PHILReady to roll, MJ.

MJAl, Ive got to go. Listen, I wantthat prime time spot, not just a two-minute update during AC 360...Al, youpromised...Yes, you did!...Al!

Phil makes a Im freezing my ass off here! face.

MJI mean it, Al. I didnt come all theway up here just to freeze my assoff...Very funny. A few minutes infront of a fireplace will do just fine.

She hangs up and gets in the car. They drive off.
