Kowhai Intermediate School We learn. No exceptions Ka ako moake tonu atu E leai se ‘Alofaga o le Ola A’oa’oina - Friday 24 June 2016 - Tē nā koutou katoa - Greetings - Talofa lava Our newsletter will now only be published in digital format due to feedback we have received. Thank you for this feedback, I am sure that the savings will be put to excellent use in our school and assist with reducing the reams of paper used and saving in colour photocopying. We will print a limited number of copies that will be available in the office. Students will also receive a copy into their Gmail account and we will send a small number out to classes so that any families without internet access may have a copy. Teachers are currently preparing midyear reports. This has been a larger job for all of our teachers as they navigate their way around a new Student Management System. Students are busy completing assessments and preparing their portfolios to go home on the last day of term. Many thanks to our Gafoa le Ata community, for the very special evening held in our school hall last Saturday, for the Po Siva. I was extremely proud of our students, the confidence and pride they demonstrated all made for a very special evening. The generous support from family and friends, the atmosphere in the hall, the great food, all astounding. I thank everyone who contributed to this special event. ROAD SAFETY We are currently working with the Auckland Council on three projects to increase the safety for our students. 1 Relocation of speed table and provision of a kea crossing facility on Onslow Road The existing speed table outside the staff vehicle entrance to Kowhai School is not highly utilised by pedestrians to cross Onslow Road. Also, it is located very near the sharp bend of Onslow Road. In order to help the school monitor and patrol our students exiting the pedestrian gate located on Onslow Road, near the Sandringham Road intersection, Auckland Transport is proposing to relocate the speed table outside the staff vehicle entrance to approximately 30m east of the Sandringham Road intersection. The relocated speed table will provide a safe location for the school children to cross Onslow Road near the Sandringham Road intersection. In addition, a kea crossing will be installed at this new speed table, which can be patrolled by the school during afternoon school peak times. 2 Installation of high friction, brown coloured surfacing on Sandringham Road, in advance of the midblock signalised crossing facility We have raised concerns that traffic travelling south along Sandringham Road, from New North Road intersection, often speed up in the vicinity of the school and do not often stop in time for the midblock signalised crossing. Auckland Transport is proposing to install high friction, brown coloured surfacing to highlight to motorists the presence of the midblock signalised crossing, as well as provide a surfacing that will help vehicles stop quickly without skidding. 3 Installation of a pedestrian fence on the southern side of the midblock signalised crossing facility on Sandringham Rd The installation of a pedestrian fence will help guide our students to cross at the midblock signalised crossing facility, between the existing crosswalk lines, rather than meandering through vehicles stopped at the signals. This was requested by us, to help with the afternoon school patrol times. Please find below plans showing the proposed changes. At this stage, Auckland Transport has just sent out letters to the Local Board, local residents and property owners regarding the proposed changes. Based on the feedback received, they will proceed with detailed design. Digital Citizenship We are in this together As partners, when it comes to supporting our students to be responsible digital citizens, we are also relying on you as parents and caregivers to have conversations about the appropriate and safe use of devices/digital technology. As a part of our Health Programme this term all students have participated in explicit lessons around digital citizenship. We are seeing an increase in the number of devices students have and as such there is an increase in the challenges. NetSafe provides a great resource if you are looking for advice or support. LOCKDOWN DRILL - Week 10 (4 - 8 July) During the last week of term, we will be having a lockdown drill. We do this to ensure that all students and staff are well rehearsed so that in the event of a real emergency, everyone will be as safe as possible. In a real emergency, our procedure is as follows: 1. The lockdown alarm will ring 2. All students and staff go inside and lay quietly on the floor, lights off 3. Teachers clear all unsecured areas, lock doors. 4. Police phoned and parents advised via email (refer example below) 5. Wait for all clear from Police/senior staff For the purposes of our drill, we need to ensure that all aspects of our procedure are followed and as such, we will send to you the email below, as part of our drill. Please do not be alarmed. We will state clearly that this is a drill only. We will also email you the day before the drill, to remind you. The email will state: "Drill only! Kowhai Intermediate School has been required to go into lockdown, due to an incident occurring nearby. We will continue to update you as information comes to hand. Please do not phone or come to the school as you will not be attended to. If you have any further questions, please contact 111" The last thing we want to do is confuse or alarm you, however, student safety is paramount and we need to ensure that our lines of communication to our community are clear. In the unlikely event that we have the coincidence of a real emergency occurring at the time of our planned drill, we will send the above email without the precursor "Drill only". Thank you for your co-operation.

MARCELLE BERNARD Stand up, Speak up, Speak easy On Thursday the 23rd of June, special guest speaker Marcelle Bernard came to Kowhai to talk to us about public speaking, as we are currently writing speeches. She talked about how to look good, sound good and feel good while presenting speeches. Her speech was inspiring and she spoke to us about her journey through public speaking, and how once upon a time she too was afraid, but is now a paid professional speaker. She told us that when a public speaker comes in we automatically think, this is going to be boring but, she was the opposite! We make public speaking boring for ourselves but we will have to speak for our whole lives so we might as well get an early start. Marcelle shared her knowledge with us and ensured us we will look good when we go up and present, and these were her 5 tips, Stand still and strong, focus, chin up, shoulders back, look at the audience and wait 5 seconds before leaving the stage. She talked to us for over an hour and captured the audience's attention for the whole duration. Marcelle’s story of success was so inspiring and will help many Kowhai students with their speeches next term.

Shalisa Teofilo, Y7 and Tali Meavale, Y8 represented Kowhai Intermediate at the Samoan Speech Competition held at Henderson Intermediate this year. Both were amazing ambassadors of our school and their families, earning a Certificate of Merit for their efforts.

On Saturday, 18 June, Gafoa le Ata students and their families had their Po Siva Fundraiser ahead of their trip to Samoa. All students, including Marcus, Lofi and Kuresa represented their families with much pride. A full house at Kowhai Intermediate hall helped to raise over $19,000 on the night. Malo le galulue faatasi o aiga ma uo, malo foi le tauivi o fanau. Ia manuia. Have a great weekend.
