Nativity Catholic Church, Burke Virginia Third Sunday of Lent March 24, 2019 My dear parishioners, Tradition says that Moses spent 40 years away from Egypt before the Lord called him to lead the people out of slavery. During that time he had a family and tended his father-in-law's animals. It was an opportunity to develop the survival skills he would need to bring the Lords flock into the same area. The mountain of the burning bush is also the mountain where they will receive the commandments. It is significant that Moses did not seek out God; rather, the Lord called Moses while he was doing his everyday task. God finds us and calls us to use the gifts we have right where we are. Paul reminds the Corinthians that although all the Israelites who left Egypt with Moses ate the same spiritual food(v 3), many displeased the Lord and were struck down in the desert(v 5). He sees this as a lesson for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did(v 6). Paul knows that despite our experience of Gods steadfast love, we too are in danger of straying. We are to learn from the example of the Israelites so that we do not fall away from God. In the Gospel today Jesus calls us to repentance. Using the parable of the fig tree, he admonishes us to produce a good harvest. In the parable we learn that while God is patient with us, his patience is not endless. There will come a time when that which refuses to bear fruit(v 9) will be cut down. Now is the time for repentance, for we do not know when the time of judgment will be. We must cultivate the seed of faith that was planted in our hearts. The best way to bear good fruit is by doing as much good as possible - sharing generously our time, talent and treasure, especially with the poor and needy. Love and Blessings, Fr. Nativity Catholic Church, Burke Virginia Third Sunday of Lent March 24, 2019

My dear parishioners,

Tradition says that Moses spent 40 years away from Egypt before the Lord called him to lead the people out of slavery. During that time he had a family and tended his father-in-law's animals. It was an opportunity to develop the survival skills he would need to bring the Lord’s flock into the same area. The mountain of the burning bush is also the mountain where they will receive the commandments. It is significant that Moses did not seek out God; rather, the Lord called Moses while he was doing his everyday task. God finds us and calls us to use the gifts we have right where we are.

Paul reminds the Corinthians that although all the Israelites who left Egypt with Moses “ate the same spiritual food” (v 3), many displeased the Lord and “were struck down in the desert” (v 5). He sees this as a lesson for us, “so that we might not desire evil things, as they did” (v 6). Paul knows that despite our experience of God’s steadfast love, we too are in danger of straying. We are to learn from the example of the Israelites so that we do not fall away from God.

In the Gospel today Jesus calls us to repentance. Using the parable of the fig tree, he admonishes us to produce a good harvest. In the parable we learn that while God is patient with us, his patience is not endless. There will come a time when that which refuses to “bear fruit” (v 9) will be cut down. Now is the time for repentance, for we do not know when the time of judgment will be. We must cultivate the seed of faith that was planted in our hearts. The best way to bear good fruit is by doing as much good as possible - sharing generously our time, talent and treasure, especially with the poor and needy.

Love and Blessings,

Fr. Bob Cilinski, Pastor

A Message from our Pastor Fr. Bob Cilinski

About The Speaker

Dr. Gregory LaNave is Professor of Theology at the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. He began working at the House of Studies in 1996 as managing editor of

The Thomist, an academic journal of philosophy and theolo-gy—a position he has held ever since.

After receiving his Ph.D. in Theology from Catholic University in 2001, he began to teach part-time at the House of Studies, and in 2006 was appointed as a full-time member of the faculty. He also serves as director of “Mercy U.,” a program for lay studies in theology taught by professors from the Dominican House, and hosted by Our Lady of Mercy parish in Potomac, Maryland.

Greg is a specialist in medieval theology, especially the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bonaventure. He has published one book (Through Holiness to Wisdom: The Nature of Theology according to St. Bonaventure) and a number of scholarly articles. He is currently working (rather slowly) on two books: one on the connection between theology and holiness, and the other on the Church. Greg is a proud native of Minnesota, but moved to the DC area in 1991. He and his wife, Anna, have lived in northern Virginia since they were married 20 years ago, and in 2004 they moved to Burke, where they have raised their four children: Lucia, Dominic, Antonio, and Vincent. Since 2012, Greg has been leading a men’s prayer group at Nativity—the “Men’s Prayer and Reflection Group,” which meets at the church every Saturday morning from 8:00 to 9:00.

When not engaged in theology, Greg’s passion for the past several years has been community theater. Last summer he was thrilled to be on stage at Nativity with two of his children for a fabulous production of Seussical (he played the Grinch and Yertle the Turtle). This March (right before the week of the parish mission) he will be starring, along with several other Nativity parishioners, in a production of Bye Bye Birdie put on by the Good Shepherd Players, in Burke.

In keeping with our tradition, we are again asking the Nativity community to help us in bringing even a small bit of joy to local children

served by organizations in our community and congregation at this Easter season. Requested donations include:

Easter candy - individually wrapped candies, chocolate rabbits, chocolate lambs, etc.

Individually wrapped healthy snacks

Small toys - to include small stuffed animals, jump ropes

Bubbles, playdoh, story books, etc.

Crayons, markers, coloring books

Personal care items for pre-teens

The organizations that we assist request that we NOT accept the following:

NO Easter baskets, NO Easter grass, NO plastic eggs

NO candy that is not individually wrapped, i.e., jelly beans

We will collect items before and after all Masses ONLY on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. Please drop your donations in the boxes located in the church vestibule. Thank you for your continued generosity and support!

If you have any questions, please contact: Kathleen Powers at 703-455-1853, email: [email protected] or visit: nativityburke.org/won-easter/

“Abortion affects countless marriages more than many people recognize. But there is no doubt that God will bring great healing to those who trust in his infinite mercy. If a past abortion can be acknowledged and

addressed, a married couple can make great strides in experiencing even more fully God’s design that ‘the two shall become one’ (Mt 19:5).” “Healing within Marriage from an Abortion,” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities

Caring for Our Common Home During Lent from Your Nativity Creation Care Ministry

During Lent, we strive to live as Christ taught us, loving our neighbors as ourselves. Adding a plant-based meal to our tables is a thoughtful way to bring that reflection and commitment into our home lives. Many people are surprised to discover that limiting the meat on our plates is a crucial way to reduce deforestation in the Amazon, protecting vulnerable people and communities.

As Catholics, we choose plant-based meals every Friday during Lent. We invite you to expand your choice to one additional day this Lenten season, or strive to eat all plant-based meals during Lent. We pray:

Holy God, earth and air and water are Your creation, and the web of life is Yours.

Help me to be a keeper of your Earth: to simplify my life, to reduce my use of energy, and to choose

plant-based foods that protect all You have created. Help me take my part in the community of people caring for the Earth,

each other, and the Amazon, the lungs of our planet. Holy Spirit, deepen my awareness of our connectedness,

help me to see that I am one strand in the sacred web of creation, and grow in me the mindfulness that all of

creation lives and moves and has its being in You, God of boundless love. Amen.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place every Wednesday during Lent from 8:00am - 2:00pm
