EVENTS IN OUR PARISH HISTORY: St. Joseph’s first permanent church was dedicated on May 10, 1881, by Bishop Lynch. The Anderson Intelligence, in an article on the dedication, quoted Bishop Lynch congratulating the little band of faithful in Anderson who had built this temple of worship. A small cemetery was located behind the church. Mrs. Bridget Kennedy was the first to be buried there.

Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday) Mark 15:1-39

Christ entered this world as a baby in Bethlehem, but even then he was God. He knew all things and could foresee the future. All through the thirty-three or more years he lived on earth, Christ in his divine nature foresaw the death he was to die. During the joy of the wedding feast of Cana and in the midst of all the miracles of curing the blind and the lame, the vision of his cross never disappeared from before his eyes. Even when Christ was transfigured on Mount Tabor, even when the Jews greeted him with shouts of Hosanna and wanted to make him king, the knowledge of his impending crucifixion was never absent. It hung as a shadow over his entire life. By enduring such great sufferings in his lifetime, Christ showed us how we should view suffering in our own. Christ did not view suffering as an evil inflicted by God. The only real evil in this world is the sin which we commit ourselves. Christ used suffering as a means to redeem mankind. We, in turn, can use suffering in our own lives as a means of gaining grace and obtaining salvation. Man has striven hard to alleviate suffering whenever possible. He has surrounded himself with comfort, warmth and softness. He has discovered pills to relieve the pain of an aching head. He has even covered these pills with sugar to make them sweet-tasting to the tongue. He has invented nerve-deadeners to make durable the hours spent in the dentist’s chair. It provides anesthetics for persons going into the operating room. He has made great strides to alleviate suffering, but he shall never totally eliminate it. Christ’s crucifixion teaches us how we can endure suffering. We can offer it up as a sacrifice for our own sins and imperfections. Christ said, “If anyone will be perfect, let him take up his cross and come after me.” Christ’s attitude toward suffering can be expressed in no better way then in the seventh and final word he spoke on earth before his death. In the midst of his terrible agony he looked upward toward heaven and said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” These last words were nothing new. They were centuries old when Christ spoke them. They are a direct quotation form the Thirty-first Psalm of king David, written centuries before. Each of us has some small cross to bear, some suffering to undergo. It is most important that we accept it willingly as did Christ. Only in this way can we be sure of meriting an eternal reward. God bless you.

WHY I LOVE MY PARISH

My husband and I are relative newcomers to St. Joseph parish. We moved to Anderson in the Fall of 2010. We found the church to be an especially peaceful space. My husband found it perfect for the Centering Prayer he practices. People were kind and welcoming. When I mentioned that the parish’s commitment to Family Promise could be better organized, I was given the “opportunity to help.” As coordinator, I have seen the incredible generosity of our people! Franciscans have been a part of my life since childhood. I have felt blessed by each of the Friars who has been assigned here. I pray their particular Charism will continue to bless us for years to come.

Many Thanks to all who attended the Lenten Penance Service last Monday. Congratulations to all who took the time to prepare for the great feast of the Resurrection, by making a good confessions.

Br. Henry would like to thank each of you who responded to the call for the $3000 needed to replace the remaining 8 lights in the church. As of the 20th of March we have met our goal! Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.

This obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products, or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. Fasting means limiting oneself to one full meal on a given fast day. Catholics who are eighteen years of age but not yet fifty-nine are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On fast days, two additional smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength. However, the two smaller meals together may not equal one full meal. Moreover, eating solid foods between meals on fast days is not permitted.
