I had been working at the Hillside School for nine years before becoming principal so I knew we had a strong group of veteran teachers who could be great mentors for student interns. To accommodate the work/life demands of adult students, Lesley offers programs on campus in the late afternoons and evenings, online, in accelerated summer sessions, and on weekends throughout the year. Many programs are also delivered in locations across Massachusetts and the country through a unique model that combines online instruction with face-to-face classes that meet no more than one weekend a month.

Change begins here. Founding a school dedicated to training kindergarten teachers was a revolutionary idea in 1909. Today, Edith Lesley’s progressive thinking remains alive and well at her namesake institution. Lesley was among the first schools to offer online M.Ed. programs; we are one of the few to provide face–to–face instruction to teachers at more than 150 locations across the country; and we are a national leader in integrating the arts and technology into education to better engage all learners. For more than 100 years, we have modeled teaching that enables all students to flourish while cultivating a passion for improving education.

Lesley’s programs are designed to meet your needs, including licensure requirements. Lesley’s programs fulfill the teacher licensure regulations instituted by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Lesley’s state-approved licensure programs are recognized through the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) Interstate Agreement, which enables graduates approved for licen-sure in Massachusetts to apply for comparable positions in 47 other states. In addition to Massachusetts DESE approval, the following programs are approved by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC): M.Ed. in Technology in Education; M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Literacy; M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Integrated Teaching Through the Arts.

In addition, Lesley is a state-approved professional development provider, offering courses, seminars, institutes, workshops, and other activities that fulfill Massachusetts’ license renewal requirements. Professional development activities are available in a wide range of formats: on weekends, weekdays, and evenings; on campus and at school sites across the nation; and online.

Lesley students benefit from comprehensive MTEL prep workshops.

For more than 10 years, Lesley students have benefited from workshops designed to prepare them for the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), which students must pass before participating in their practicum. Many students from other institutions of higher education choose to pay a small fee to participate in these workshops as well. With the recent addition of a math MTEL requirement, Lesley has introduced a diagnostic test, with preparatory workshop, that is available to all students for a fee.

“MAP” your progress as a student and a professional.

Lesley’s ePortfolio (My Assessment Portfolio, or MAP) provides an easy way for you to document and demonstrate your learning online. You’ll benefit from having a secure electronic location for papers, projects, multimedia files, artwork, videos of your teaching – everything related to your development as an education professional. In addition, MAP enables faculty to review your work and provide direct feedback via rubrics, handwritten notes, or recorded audio messages. Once you have completed your program, MAP provides career benefits, including:

An easy way to share examples of your best work during interviews

An initial five-year subscription that is easily renewed, making ePortfolio useful in your ongoing promotion or assessment needs

Lesley’s unique Collaborative Internship Programs provide professionally mentored, school-based, accelerated opportunities to earn an M.Ed.Lesley’s affiliation with independent and public schools offers students the opportunity to com-plete a full school year field placement while taking graduate courses that lead to a Master’s degree and an initial teacher license. These programs integrate theory and practice and include courses and seminars held at partner school sites as well as at Lesley’s Cambridge campus.

Professional Development School PartnershipsLesley’s professional development school partnerships with schools in Cambridge was established to enhance the pre-service preparation of Lesley students, the professional development of veteran teachers and university faculty, and the education of children. A Lesley faculty member is assigned to each school, and clusters of student teachers are placed in the schools where they get valuable classroom experience. Lesley and school faculty engage in professional exchanges such as study groups, workshops, curriculum development, and classroom inquiry projects.

Multiple field placement opportunities, including paid internshipsIn conjunction with schools in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and Newton, Lesley offers exciting yearlong, paid internships. These placements, along with traditional practicums, provide immer-sion in a mentored teaching relationship with excellent classroom teachers, as well as the oppor-tunity to participate in all aspects of school and classroom life, such as faculty meetings, parent meetings, and ongoing professional development.

Lesley’s Division of Field Placement and Professsional Partnerships or field placement office works with many school districts, including: Andover, Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Belmont, Cam-bridge, Cape Cod, Chelmsford, Framingham, Lexington, Mansfield, Methuen, Natick, Newton, Plymouth, Quincy, Somerville, Shrewsbury, Watertown and Worcester.

97% placement rate.

Lesley’s Career Resource Center sends out a survey to each graduate of Lesley’s on-campus education programs

as part of an ongoing effort to measure success. Over the last five years, of those graduates who were seeking

employment and returned surveys, 97% were hired within six months. In 2009, a challenging year for state and

local education budgets, returned surveys showed that 95% of Lesley graduates seeking positions were hired

within 6 months.

Center for Academic AchievementThe Center for Academic Achievement (CAA) offers peer tutoring to students taking classes in degree-granting programs at Lesley

university. Trained tutors help students with diverse needs strengthen their academic skills. This includes assistance with organization,

time management, writing, research strategies, test preparation, and subject support, including math. www.lesley.edu/caa

Educator Licensure Certification ServicesThe Lesley university Certification Office provides current and prospective students, as well as alumni, with information about

licensure and certification, state testing, recertification, and educator licensure in other states. The office is committed to support-

ing students who must complete state testing requirements. Lesley offers Teacher Test Prep Workshops for students and alumni

who wish to prepare for the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). These workshops are held four times a year and

are all free for Lesley students and alumni except for the math workshop. www.lesley.edu/certification
