Year 10 Food Equity Fundraiser On Thursday 21 November our class held a food stall during lunchtime. A variety of sweet and savoury foods were sold. Thank you to students and staff who supported us. $65 was raised for the Lismore Soup Kitchen to assist with food equity in our local community.

Mrs Evans and Ms Gray’s Year 10 Food Technology class also sold food and raised $33 for a local charity.

National Computer Skills Competition

This year we had nine students enter the National Computer Skills Competition which is run by the University of Sydney. The competition runs over five weeks. Each week students get several problems that must be solved using the programming language, Python. The first week is a practice week which we use to make sure our software is running properly and stu-dents can submit their answers to the university.

In the Beginners Competition Jordan Little, Lookie Rarot and Rachel Cook of Year 9 all achieved Merit Certificates while Lucas McKey received a Certificate of Participation. Attempting the Intermediate Level, Jesse Lennon and James Cameron received Distinction certificates with Mitchell Roberts and Joshua Eckersley achieving perfect scores.

Our first student to attempt the Advanced Level, Christian Evers of Year 11, did not attempt questions in the last week of the competition. He made a wise decision to prepare for his yearly exams which commenced in the following week. Christian still managed to finish the competition on the Leader Board in 37

th place and received a Credit Certificate.

Congratulations need to go to all the students who participated in the competition. I am sure that they all found it an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Principal’s Report

This is the final newsletter for the year. It has been a very hectic year and the end of the year is actually one of the busiest times of the year. We welcome Mr Phil Meehan who is our relieving Deputy Principal from the start of 2014. Mr Meehan worked in the Regional Office and was the Manager of Equity Programs in the region. Mr Meehan was previously Head Teacher PDHPE in his last school based position. I would like to take this opportunity to remind people who are newly enrolling students for 2014, to contact the school office as soon as possible this year. Whatever year level your student may be enrolling in, it is important to submit the appropriate paperwork this year to ensure your student can commence on time in 2014. I would like to thank the staff, students and parents for a great year and wish everyone a safe holiday break. We are moving into changing times with the implementation of the National Curriculum in NSW in 2014; Lismore High School is positioned well to meet this challenge and as a school we are moving forward together. Nigel Brito Principal

Congratulations Taholo

To say the School Spectacular is a big thing is like saying Mt Everest is a big hill. With over 3600 perform-ers, a choir of 1300 voices and one of the largest performance venues in Australia, School Spectacular is the largest youth performance in the world! Taholo Renagi, Year 12, was not just involved; he was one of the featured singers, and closed the

first act of the show. He also sang and danced with two others in a hip hop, funky, Latin Rock piece. The class of the featured artists was extraordinary and to be included was a huge achievement. Taholo has gained invaluable experience, contacts, confidence and techniques during his involvement with the show and it is a testament to the opportunities that exist for all public school students to be recognised, mentored and exposed to large audiences. Taholo is also a member of the Talent Development Program and is due to perform for representatives for Sony music in the near future. This is a student not only going places but proud of the place he is coming from – Lismore High School. Brian Wappett Music Teacher

Barista course at Wollongbar Tafe

On Wednesday 13 and Friday 22 of November , Year 10 Food

Technology students along with Mrs Baker and Mrs Evans attended Wollongbar Tafe for a full day barista course. We learnt how to make a 30ml shot of coffee in 25 seconds which was interesting. We also learnt to make a cappuccino, mocha, latte, and hot chocolate. By the end of the day we were a little crazy from the amount of coffee we had consumed, but overall it was fun, awesome and a great experience. Kara Moyle

Dalley Street Drivers in Brisbane

Programming the robot is the easy part of the 2013 FLL Nature’s Fury Challenge; building the robot to carry out the tasks is the real challenge. On November 16 the Dalley Street Drivers (Lismore High’s Robotics Team) participated in the Brisbane Region Challenge at the Cube in QUT. This was the first time we had competed in this challenge and we were nervous about how good the other teams were. We didn’t win, but showed we were a team to watch. Our robot didn’t behave itself perfectly but we were able to secure the 23

rd place out of a field of 51. As a result of what we have

learnt we will return next year as a far stronger team. Possibly we will take two teams next year, our team of nine was too big; two smaller teams will be more successful. Jim McInerney

Reunion On Friday 16 November the Lismore High School students and teachers of 1959 – 63 reconnected for their 50 year reunion. The reunion held over four days allowed the old LHS cohort to visit the old LHS campus (now the Richmond Tweed Regional Library) and our current site, as well as socialise with old friends in their home town over drinks and nibbles.

It was the ‘main event’, however, of dinner and dancing at the Gateway Hotel and Restaurant, that current Year 12 students Sharnee Fry, Hannah Sky, Sam Brown and myself had the pleasure of attending. It was an amazing night where we learnt the history of our school, saw old friends reconnect, heard many stories of their ‘glory days’ and learnt a new trick or two!

As we mingled and spoke to everyone I noticed that even after 50 years these men and women still felt pride in our school. They were constantly engaged in conversations about how the school is now, and provided us with advice on how to return Lismore High School to its ‘former glory’. Their pride was made clear when an impressive performance from current teacher Ms Helen George started the singing of the Lismore High School song, which soon resulted in a room of over one hundred people belting it out.

We met people who willingly shared their different experiences in life, some with very successful careers, others who started families, and many who wanted to simply have a chat and pass on some advice. All in all it was a wonderful night with amazing people sharing with us their positive outlook on what our futures could be.
