GHENT CITY GUIDE JANUARY 2016 LISTEN … THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A COMPLETE CITY MAP, CERTAINLY NOT IN A CITY LIKE GHENT. STREETS TEND TO CLOSE, RESTAURANTS AND PUBS POP-UP AND DISAPPEAR… EVEN WE LOOSE OURSELVES IN THE MAZE OF THE MEDIEVAL HISTORIC CITY CENTRE. YET, THERE IS THIS MAP, UP TO DATE (FOR NOW), WITH THE MOST ENTICING HOTSPOTS. ENJOY THEM WHILE YE CAN! 01. The Sint-Veerleplein street lanterns light up every time a baby is born in Ghent. 02. In 1991 grunge band Nirvana played at the Vooruit Concerthall – while smashing their guitars to pieces, a big piece flew in the audience, hitting a girl right in the smacker – she lost her front teeth. 03. The Just Judges-panel (part of the Ghent Altarpiece) has been stolen since 1934 – find it and get a reward (a few kegs of Gruut!) 04. Ghent Creative City of Music – it’s an official title. Why? 600 active bands. Nuff said. 05. The yearly Ghent Festivities (third week of July) welcome more than a million visitors. Fights rarely happen (catfights do). We know how to drink and party! 06. If there is one town where you should go full veggie (not full retard!), it is Ghent. We launched Thursday Veggie-day, worldwide, which gave us the title Veggie Capital of Europe! 07. Funny story (and a little sad): just a few meters from one another two cuberdons-sellers (‘neuzekes’ – Ghent nose) try to snatch away each other’s customers. Sometimes they really fight, biting each other in the nose. They shouldn’t. 08. Ghent is a city of beer – Gruut, Crabbelaer, Gentse Strop, Piraat, Augustijn, Gulden Draak, … you should try them all.
