COURSE OVERVIEW

The course explores and develops designers’ abilities in three-dimensional design and prototyping. Broad knowledge and skills are gained in the communication of ideas, and the application of ergonomics, sustainability, product styling, materials and manufacturing processes. Most notably students work towards the production of fully functional appearance prototypes.

Core components of the course include design practice, technology, drawing, manufacturing, CAD and design communication. Students are able to select from a number of optional modules, which build upon these disciplines or develop expertise in different specialised areas. These modules are used to differentiate between BA and BSc degree classifications.

The BA in Industrial Design and Technology has been devised to meet the needs and ambitions of students who wish to focus on a highly user-centred approach to design. This degree integrates product appearance and strategic uses of design and sustainable issues, whilst still taking responsibility for decisions on manufacturing and the application of relevant technology.

Accredited by the Institute of Design Engineers, the BSc in Product Design and Technology

provides an advanced understanding of mechanics, electronics and materials, helping students to focus on the implementation of new technolgies in innovative product development.

Both the Industrial Design and Technology and Product Design and Technology programmes develop capability in the design of innovative and desirable products. The use of Computer Aided Design (CAD), computer visualisation, Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Rapid Prototyping (RP) are integral to both programmes.

Students undertaking the four year programme spend one year in industry, providing a valuable opportunity to gain professional experience. Following successful placements, students are awarded with a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS). Past DPS placements have been conducted in association with the following companies: Conran, Hodges and Drake, Kinneir Dufort, Nokia, Reebok, SmallFry, Smiths Medical, Stanley, Triumph and Unilever.

Students participate in a dissertation module during their final year. This involves researching appropriate literature, discussing the topic with people in the subject area and gaining first hand experience of the chosen topic. This module allows individuals to display academic ability in their degree, alongside established design skills.

FOREWORDMESSAGE FROM THEHEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Welcome to this annual celebration of the work of our final year students.

A major feature of the department is that students demonstrate a wide range of talents – from developing creative and innovative concepts through to the building and evaluation of their design prototypes. The students’ work is characterised by a broad range of skills and features which nurture, and demonstrate, the high level of creativity and innovation for which Loughborough has become recognised. This arises from the unique way in which we are able to blend industrial design with engineering expertise, and apply this to the design of products. In doing this our students are able to move beyond traditional disciplines and engage in a truly multidisciplinary experience, which is always located within a

framework of designing products.

The future of design innovation lies with individuals who can join the dots, cross the boundaries and take a leap of faith. In short, the ability to undertake multidisciplinary working. Both the BA and BSc programmes provide a breadth and depth of skill sets that makes our design and technology students some of the most sought after both inside and outside the UK.

Our very best wishes for the future to all our finalists.

Enjoy the Show.

From August 2010, the Department of Design and Technology will become a part of the Loughborough Design School. The school will bring together existing activities with strong synergies that facilitate the development of new collaboration both within the University and with external partners.

The vision is of a Design School, which aims to build upon existing strengths in Design and Technology, ESRI and Ergonomics through the

collaboration that will come from greater interaction and co-location. It builds upon the significant success of all partners in the RAE 2008 and exploits the provision of a new East Park Design Centre, due to be completed in June 2011.

It will lead to the creation of a multi-disciplinary, design-focused institution at Loughborough with an international reputation, excellence in teaching and research, and capable of attracting strong financial support and the most ambitious students.

TEAM TWENTYTEN

All members of the team have had the challenge of planning and organising the show, so special thanks go to the individual team members for all their hard work and extra effort.

This work, in addition to the project work produced by all graduates, has created a degree show emphasising the qualities of the department, of which the students are proud to be a part.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to TwentyTen, this year’s Loughborough University Design and Technology Degree Show. The show is a celebration of the work we have produced during our time at Loughborough.

On behalf of all finalists, we would like to thank the departmental staff for their guidance and support throughout the duration of the degree. We would especially like to thank Steve Summerskill and Rhoda Trimingham for their help with compiling degree show material.

To our fellow students, we wish to thank you. What you see around you is the result of many hours of sustained hard work from finalists throughout their degree programme. The dedication and commitment shown by students and the show team has ensured a satisfying degree show output.

This year’s show demonstrates a diverse collection of innovative projects. The degree show provides an excellent opportunity to discuss the projects with the indiviudal designers or the degree show commitee. Don’t hesitate to come and have a chat with us.

Enjoy the show!The TwentyTen team
