Mount Altissimo was explored by Michelangelo who discovered

the richness of its marble

Cosimo Medici I started the rst major excavations on the marble

of statuary from Seravezza

After that Marble excavation had long been suspended by the Medicis,

Frenchman Jean Baptiste Alexandre Henraux (responsible for purchasing white

marbles for the public monuments of France), set up with Marco Borrini an

association to reopen and expand the stone quarries. Started the rapid and

international success of the enterprise, thanks to many prestigious works (St.

Isaac Cathedral in St. Peterburg) and artists exhibitions (Hiram Powers at the

Metropolitan Museum in NY)

Thanks to the nephew, Mr. Bernard Sancholle, Henraux continued to grow in

importance through its material and production, consolidating Serravezza’s

regional stone industry; after the World Word II, Henraux was involved in

numerous important projects (Montecassino’s Abbey with marble sculptures and

architectural ornamentation; Saint Peter’s Cathedral in Rome for the prestigious

polychromatic marble oor)

Henraux extended into the modern international art world through Henry Moore.

After the work for Unesco headquarter in Paris, Moore provided Henraux with its

contemporary forms of plastic research, bringing the company to be the point of

reference for the best sculptors from all over the worl

Thanks to Mr. Erminio Cidonio, the actual company director of Henraux, started

the development of contemporary sculpture in Querceta, bringing famous

sculptures in the company as Jean Hans Arp, Juan Mirò, Isamu Nogushi, Giò

Pomodoro, Leone Tommasi and Giannetto Salotti. Start the publication “Marmo”

Henraux Company remains a signicant leader in today’s international marble

industry; meanwhile, on a more regional level, it’s involved in a broad project of

rening and strengthening existing production facilities while also helping to

rezone and carefully re-plan large areas of otherwise neglected industrial property

in Querceta.

Henraux understands the importance of its relationship with the surrounding area

and to give the something back to the region: this philosophy underscores why

Henraux is today an engine of innovation and development, not only on terms of

its own stone business, but also in terms of its regional advancement.

One specic outcome of this culturally inclusive approach is the development of

the Henraux Foundation: an atelier consisting in sculptors, architects, designers;

a specialization school for stone artisans ; a living museum of existing works and

to be realized….

15th of April 2011The Foundation was born thanks to the President of Henraux, Mr. Paolo Carli, for

recuperating and giving continuity to the project and extraordinary experience of Erminio

Cidonio. At the establishments in Querceta, he was able to organize an international

centre of sculpture, with the presence of artists such as Henry Moore, Hans Arp, Henri

Georges Adam, Isamu Noguchi, Francois Stahly, Emile Gilioli, Georges Vantongerloo,

and many others, who began an artistic and cultural season of great vitality, which effects

still last today in the sculpture laboratories and workshops of Seravezza and Pietrasanta.

The Statute of the Henraux Foundation denes the aims of the institution, already stated

in its denomination: “Henraux Foundation for the valorisation and the development of the

district of the Apuan-Versilia marble.” The Foundation – non-prot – promotes, at a

national and international levels, the valorisation and the development of the stony district

through initiatives directed to the historical knowledge of the processes of cultivation of

the quarries, of the work and use of the marble material; to the re-utilization and

preservation of the structures, plants and machineries; to the cultural, artistic, and

landscapes conservation of the working places; to the scientic research, studies, and

technological innovation applied to the marble manufacture and to its industrial,

craftsman like, and artistic utilizations, enlarging the use of marble and of the products

and services related to it.

Fondazione Henraux means to pursue its own goals mainly by organizing initiatives,

exhibitions and cultural events, playing a national and international artistic and cultural

role

Luce di Carrara was created at the beginning of 2000, based on the philosophy of the

Made in Italy brand. This entailed combining the uniqueness of natural stones with design

aptitude derived from a strong industrial tradition, in order to create a unique product of

innate beauty, but also easy to use, versatile and reliable for contemporary design.

The world of natural stone needed to change direction in order to allow anyone to create

their own ideal marble and draw shapes, structures, architecture, without being inuenced

by the “sacred” monumental nature of a marble block.

The turning point for Luce di Carrara came in 2013, when the brand joined Henraux: this

meant an industrial and technologically advanced heritage but also established working

relations with architects, designers and artists, that have been able to transform marble

into a exible material, capable of preserving its uniqueness yet, discovering new shape

of expression.

The interpreter of the new course of Luce di Carrara by Henraux was Michael

Anastassiades, a Cypriot by birth with a Mediterranean culture, but a Londoner by

adoption. An interest in the rich beauty and inherent qualities of marble, drive

Anastassiades to explore the advanced technological facilities that the company has to

offer and goes over: Miracle Chips were born.

First Step of Luce di Carrara: The Marble’s Collection

The rst collection in April 2013 dedicated to the materials and coordinated by Michael

Anastassiades was an innovative idea: the selection of a colour pallet, inspired by the

natural qualities and characteristics of the Marble in a unique thickness of 1.2 cm, for

underlining the strength and modernity of a strong but exible material.

And dividing the colours by collection, giving unique names and meaning to each of all:

BIANCOLUCE: the purest and most exclusive of marbles; a selection of a reach set of

tones, that gives depth, glow, light and intensity to the pattern.

CROMOLUCE I: a pallet of coloured tones that complete and are in the same time in

contrast with BiancoLuce collection; the intense contrast between light background and

strong veins create a rened pattern.

The Marble’s Collection

CROMOLUCE II: marbles with alive, non-directional lines that offer variations of tone and

colour in a different way of CromoLuce I.

MATERIALUCE: a pallet of brous Travertine, concentric appearance and suggestive of

rapid movement. Distinct Tonal and textural variations.

MINIMALUCE: colour and tonal purity, absence of vein and direction. Calm, harmonious

and neutral

For each material in every single collection, the nishing has respected the nature of

marbles: the nishes of Luce di Carrara probe and explore the materials to reveal its real

essence and way to express themselves.

Luce di Carrara presents a series of new design project, following the rst collection

dedicated exclusively to the materials coordinated by Michael Anastassiades. From the

material to the new form, marble, with all its expressive and functional variables,

represents matter and reason as well as the intrinsic and essential nature of these

objects.

From the architectural space to the product design, Luce di Carrara links the precious

nature of its marble a series of objects that form the Design Collection. Next to the choice

of the different stone materials, that the company offers to each designer, there's the

extraordinary artisanship of a corporate team, able to realize the look of the various

projects.

Nearby the Miracle Chips, thanks to the culture of Henraux of the Apuan Alps, the new

collection is born: divided into two complementary product types, the Living and

Bathroom, this collection create an aesthetic and material dialogue meeting a series of

requirements for today’s new living spaces.

Have drawn objects with design solutions that are versatile and above all useful, both in

terms of their setting and the general system of décor. The functions are clean, and

especially clear are the different stone materials that enrich the aesthetic dimension,

connecting the ancient history to the language of the contemporary design and

architecture.

COHERENCE: the project includes both territorial and product

coherence, where all stages, from design to production,

merchandising and communications, are coordinated by one

vision: One vision focused on a new way of experiencing marble

that has its origin in the centuries-old tradition of Henraux

STYLE: Marble is not just a word, it is a style, a way of seeing and

translate the world of things. For designers all over the world, Luce di

Carrara means having a material, a language and a exible design

composition, but with no imposition of one single style because it

contains all the styles.

TERRITORY OF CARRARA: as project that will remind a territory, that

belongs to the Made in Italy brand. This is thanks to two qualities:

Marble and Men, who from Michelangelo till today’s young

architects, have been able to turn it into work that can’t be replicate

elsewhere

MODERNITY: the contemporary world is part of Luce di Cararra

Project. It’s the different interpretation of our products, that will make

our company a unique reference for designing the new
