It is polite to shake hands. In the Francophone south, close friends may embrace while brushing cheeks

and kissing the air along with a handshake. In the Anglophone north, close friends have a unique handshake in which, as

they pull their hands back they snap the other person’s middle finger with their thumb.

As a sign of respect men often lower their head and avert their eyes when greeting an elder or a superior and elders are greeted first.

host. Do not bring wine if your host is Muslim. Cameroonians are somewhat formal and believe good table manners

demonstrate respect Many Cameroonians eat with their hands, although foreign guests may be

offered cutlery.

Cameroon Ettiquette

With foreigners the most common greeting is the handshake with

a smile. When shaking hands between themselves Ghanaians will hold the

right hand in the normal manner but will then twist and click each other’s middle finger. Unless you are experienced it is best to stick to a normal handshake!

Christians will generally shake hands between the sexes; practicing Muslims often will not shake hands with people of the opposite sex.

Dress well; Ghanaians place a lot of emphasis on how people dress. You may need to remove your shoes.

Ghanaians table manners are relatively formal. Ghanaians always want to protect their own and others’ face as

well as maintain harmonious relationships. As a result they tend to use proverbs, wise sayings, analogies readily.

Polygamy is widespread; divorce is rare. Children are taught to respect their elders and

usually help with housework and farm work at the age of seven.

Women make traditional crafts such as baskets, carpets, and pottery.

Most popular music is Makossa. The culture of Cameroon is very regional

considering it has a unique mix of French, and British, and African culture.

The north is largely Muslim and the South is Christian.
