NELSON earns nationalcertification

Chris Nelson, Recreation Supervisor, was recently certified as a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) by the National Certification Board (NCB) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

The CPRP certification is granted to individuals employed in the recreation, park resources and leisure services professions who meet the eligibility requirements—including a combination of higher education and/or work experience—and who successfully complete the national CPRP examination. The examination tests knowledge in all aspects of general administration, programming and operations management for parks and recreation.

Nelson has been with Manhattan Parks and Recreation for seven years and coordinates youth sports.

“Chris has worked hard to complete the requirements for this certification and it is a testament to his commitment to professionalism in the parks and recreation field,” Eddie Eastes, Parks and Recreation Director, said.

The CPRP program is offered by the National Certification Board in coordination with NRPA and the CPRP Certification Committee.

Manhattan PARKS

YOUR voices.OUR future.

CiCo Park Drainage ImprovementsCiCo Park is a popular year-round destination. In early 2015, the area east of CiCo Pool and Bishop Stadium will be under construction. The project addresses downstream flooding by constructing two detention basins in the park. An added bonus will be a bigger and better sledding hill! Work is expected to be complete before CiCo Pool opens in May.

City Park ImprovementsAt City Park Pool, new shade structures are being installed to provide areas where swimmers can get out of direct sunlight and new picnic tables are being installed. A project in the planning stages will improve pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular access to the pool, add parking spaces and improve drainage. Another project in City Park will pave existing on-street parking on North Park Road and add sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety. A third project will add lighting and improve seating for Arts in the Park. All projects are currently in design, and construction is expected to occur summer and fall 2015.

Douglass Center ImprovementsDouglass Center is one of Manhattan’s most vibrant and historic community recreation centers. Air conditioning in the gym is expected to be completed in 2015. Upgrades planned for spring 2015 include a paved parking lot and significant repairs to the roof and rain gutters. The project is funded with Community Development Block Grants.

Frank Anneberg Park Sports Field and Lighting ImprovementsFrank Anneberg Park is one of Manhattan’s most highly used parks, annually hosting more than 1,900 baseball/softball games and 650 soccer games. A major change coming in fall 2015 will be installation of artificial turf at Twin Oaks Sports Complex and Soccer Field 1. We will also replace the aging sports field lighting on Twin Oaks Fields 1-4 and Soccer Fields 1 and 2. These improvements will reduce the number of cancelled games due to rainouts and increase the community’s opportunities for recreation.

Kansas River Water Trail KiosksAre you planning a float trip on the Kansas or Big Blue Rivers this Spring? Be sure to check out the new Kansas River Water Trail kiosks that will be installed at the Blue River Access Point near Highway 24 or at the Kansas River Access under K-177 Bridge, south of Fairmont Park. The kiosks will provide information about the Water Trail and local attractions. The project is funded through Kansas Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism and donations from the Westar Green Team.

Playground Surface ReplacementHave you noticed that some playgrounds are a little more green? Synthetic turf safety surface has been installed at Longs Park and Sunset Zoo playgrounds. CiCo and Anneberg Park playgrounds are slated to be upgraded in 2015.

Triangle Park Phase II ImprovementsTriangle Park is quickly becoming the place to be for outdoor events in Aggieville. Several of the brick sidewalks at Triangle Park were replaced in 2013, and this Summer, the second phase of the project will update the remaining sidewalks and plaza. Electrical improvements will also be made. The project is funded with City-University funds.

Strategic Facility Improvement PlanThe Parks and Recreation Strategic Facility Improvement Plan is taking a comprehensive look at Manhattan’s recreation facilities and programs. The plan will evaluate existing indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, assess the community's needs for improved places to play, and develop strategies to enhance existing (or possibly build new) sport courts, fields and gyms that the entire community will benefit from.

A Steering Committee of 15 residents invested in the future of Manhattan’s recreation facilities provides input to guide the planning process. The members represent a diverse group of stakeholders, committed to helping staff and the consultants prepare a relevant, community-driven plan.

T. Russel l Reitz Animal Shelter605 Levee Dr. 785-587-2783OPEN Thursday-Tuesday 1:00p.m.-5:30p.m. Wednesday (reclaims only) 3:00p.m.5:30p.m.The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter provides service to Riley County, Pottawatomie County and the city of Manhattan. We provide sanctuary to animals, encourage adoptions and promote responsible pet ownership. We also serve the citizens and animals of our community by providing Animal Control services and upholding the laws set forth for their protection.

Here are a few tips for residents:• Cats and dogs must be registered with the City of Manhattan. To register, take proof of rabies

vaccination (the paperwork from your vet) to City Hall during business hours. If you received the Registration Application from your vet, be sure to mail it in; it is only an application, and not the license itself.

• Manhattan has a leash ordinance. Basically, if your pet is off your property, it is required to be on leash. Electronic/remote collars and/or voice command are not sufficient.

• There is a dangerous dog ordinance in Manhattan. It does not ban any breed, but does hold some breeds to a higher standard of care and responsibility. It addresses individual dogs that have shown aggression or aggressive tendencies, and has rules in place for these dogs, in order to prevent accidents and injuries.

• The nuisance ordinance addresses animals that create unwelcome situation in the community. Be it a cat who uses the neighbors’ sandbox as a litter pan, or the dog who barks and wakes the neighborhood, the pet owner is responsible for the pet and its behaviors. The nuisance law also addresses feces of pets. In a nutshell, pick up after your pet.

If you have an emergency or Animal Control concern, please call the Riley County Police Department at (785) 537-2112 ext. 0.
