    PRAYER OF BLESSING

Blessed are you, Lord God, Father all-holy for your boundless love. The tree, once the source of shame and death for human-kind,

has become the cross of our redemption and life.

When his hour had come to return to you in glory, the Lord Jesus, Our King, our Priest, and our Teacher, freely mounted the scaffold of the cross and made it his royal throne, his altar of sacrifice, his pulpit of truth.

On the cross, lifted above the earth, he triumphed over our age-old enemy. Cloaked in his own blood, he drew all things to himself.

On the cross, he opened out his arms and offered you his life: the sacrifice of the New Law that gives to the sacraments their saving power.

On the cross, he proved what he had prophesied: the grain of wheat must die to bring forth an abundant harvest.

Father, we honor this cross as the sign of our redemption. May we reap the harvest of salvation planted in pain by Christ Jesus. May our sins be nailed

to his cross, the power of life released, pride conquered, and weakness turned to strength.

May the cross be our comfort in trouble, our refuge in the face of danger, our safeguard on life's journey, until you welcome us to our heavenly home.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

  • On Sunday, June 25 a charter bus filled with 45 chattering teenagers and 10 anxious chaperones from a picturesque New England town disembarked at the doorstep of the Bishop Romero Center. Our mission was simple – to serve those most in need through humility and charity. By week's end, we would become closer to each other and in our love for Jesus Christ. My account of this journey is but a poor attempt to capture the feelings of that week, but I would like to share a couple of unforgettable experiences in working with the impoverished, the homeless, and the hungry of Camden and nearby

Philadelphia, PA. I will never forget the day I spent at the New Visions Center, and neither will my son. Having largely given to the poor and homeless through the venue of a parish collection envelope or innocuous food collection bins, it was a privilege to be brought into the service and confidence of the staff and clients of New Visions that hot, humid Monday. We sorted clothes, assisted homeless citizens in selecting footwear and toiletries, and served meals to the hungry. Despite the “reputation” of the area, our group felt a sense of peace and acceptance among the staff and clients as we worked. As a parent, I hoped my son would find his time at the Romero Center to be an enriching experience – one beyond a mere “community service” action. My wishes were confirmed the night before we departed Camden. In a beautiful candle lighting prayer and reflection ceremony, my sixteen-year old son Patrick, eloquently summed up the need for social justice in a nation blessed with material wealth and resources, largely by calling our political leaders to task in addressing the issues associated with urban poverty. Proudly, I watched a quiet young man recount what he had seen and how it permanently affected his thinking about social issues. Yes, Christ walks among the poor in Camden and neighboring Philadelphia. That is where we will feel his presence the most, until that glorious moment we are united with Him in His Kingdom. I recall the words of Mother Theresa, as she spoke to a journalist about her mission; “When I look into the faces of the poor, the hungry, the forgotten or the dying, I see the face of Jesus Christ….” My son and I are truly thankful to the staff of the Romero Center for the wonderful experiences we shared. May God Bless them all.

HOLY HOUR FOR THE HEALING OF THE CHURCH In addition to our Divine Mercy Holy Hour each Thursday at 12:45 PM, during Lent we will also host Eucharistic Adoration on Friday nights from 7:45 PM – 8:45 PM (following the Stations). This time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament will be dedicated to prayer for the healing of our universal Church.

PREACHED STATIONS OF THE CROSS: YOUR BAPTISMAL CALL TO BE BLESSED The Stations of the Cross will be prayed for 5 Fridays in Lent at 7:00 PM. Each week a different version of the Stations will be used and Father George will preach on our call to be Blessed from the Beatitudes.

Each Monday from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM in all the Churches of the Paterson Diocese

    ALMSGIVING

Romero Center Ministries was founded on March 24, 1998, on the 18th anniversary of the martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador. St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral parish converted an empty convent on its campus with a vision for an urban retreat center that would ground people in Jesus’ call to serve the poor among us.

    PAINT THE TOWN YELLOW

Our parish will participate in the Paint the Town Yellow campaign to promote optimism and to counter depression in our world. Companies, creatives, and community members are uniting to Shine a Light on Depression by creating Optimistic art, activities, and events - all featuring: International Optimism Yellow (a/k/a ‘INT-O Yellow’) - a Color with a Cause. St Vincent’s, along with other Madison Churches and groups, are asked to decorate 19 Flowers which will be displayed throughout Madison during May, which is Mental Health Awareness month. Essentially, the yellow disc "canvases" for the flowers are currently in development with the MHS wood shop and art students, and will soon be distributed to each of

the participating groups so that participants can paint flowers on them (front side) and write their Optimistic idea for how to brighten the town of Madison on the back. How can you participate? SVM has 19 flowers to decorate. Can you join us on March 31 st (early afternoon – time TBD) in the gym? Each flower can be decorated by a family, group of friends, couple or individual. If you would like to participate, please let Fr. George know by calling the Parish Office and registering your name. We are only given 19 “flowers” to decorate, so don’t wait too long. You can also email [email protected] to be one of the 19! 973-377-4000.

  • The Trip of a Lifetime: Make a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land Now is the Time!

This Summer is the perfect opportunity to travel to the homeland of Jesus. Our pilgrimage, led by Father Darwin Lastra and Jan Figenshu, will change you forever. This year’s group will be quite small which will enable us to experience the special places of the Gospels in a new and more intimate way. Ask any of our parishioners who have gone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and they will agree:: Traveling to the homeland of Jesus

changes you forever. The benefits of making this trip are plentiful: experience a spiritual awakening, discover the land of the Bible, gain a deeper insight and understanding of Scripture. Be transformed in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. Hurry! We are leaving soon…the plane departs Newark Airport on July 10 and we return on July 18, 2019. We look forward to experiencing Nazareth, Mt Tabor, the Jordan River, a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, the way of the Cross, the birthplace of Jesus, the streets of Jerusalem, and witnessing the empty tomb with you. We will stand in the sites of the Scriptures and walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Join us!! You will never be the same and you most certainly will not regret it. For more information, contact Jan Figenshu at [email protected] or ext 253.

    Stewardship

A seemingly minor player in today's gospel is the fig tree that does not bear fruit. The owner of the orchard wants to cut it down because it is exhausting the soil. The gardener, however, asks for the opportunity to give the tree special attention, to cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it. This is stewardship. We are surrounded by fruitless fig trees; some of us may even be the fig tree! Discipleship does not mean we stand and stare and complain about the tree's lack of fruit. It doesn't mean grumbling about the way it is exhausting the soil. Discipleship means helping that fig tree be fully alive by caring for it. Like the gardener, we have to get our hands dirty as we nurture the tree and help it bear fruit. This means praying for and with one another, going to Mass together, and discovering the unique "fruits" God has placed within each of us. Just as the fig tree cannot fertilize itself, neither can we alone sustain ourselves. Stewardship means supporting one another.

    PASTORAL COUNCIL

You are invited to attend the next Pastoral Council meeting to be held on Monday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Library Media Center. At our last meeting in February the sub-committee on the Sexual Abuse Crisis presented a draft of focus group questions based on the results of our Expanding Our Vision Survey. Refinement of those questions will continue at our March meeting. We will also begin reviewing focus group questions for the other sub group, Attracting New Parishioners. An update on the plans for our Discernment sessions was also given at our February meeting, and we sincerely thank those parishioners who attended the information talks. Please remember that members of the Pastoral Council are available in the lobby before and after mass to address any concerns or answer any questions you

may have. We look forward to seeing you.

    TERCER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA Domingo Ex 3:1-8a, 13-15; 1 Cor 10:1-6, 10-12; Lk 13:1-9 Lunes Is 7:10-14, 8:10; Heb 10:4-10; Lk 1:26-38 Martes Dn 3:25, 34-43; Mt 18:21-35 Miércoles Dt 4:1, 5-9; Mt 5:17-19 Jueves Jer 7:23-28; Lk 11:14-23 Viernes Hos 14:2-10; Mk 12:28-34 Sábado Hos 6:1-6; Lk 18:9-14

  • diferencia de Moisés, el Señor nos llama para acercarnos en nuestra

    jornada con Jesús al Calvario.
