FROM THE PASTOR’S

DESK….

I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. (From today’s Gospel) As members of the Church we are to continue the work of Christ in our world today. That is an exciting challenge, but a bit intimidating as well. Christ isn’t walking the earth for us to observe like he did two thousand years ago. Jesus isn’t able to reach out to encourage us like he did with the apostles. How do we fulfill our mission now that Christ has returned to the Father? This is probably the same fear that the apostles and the early Church experienced when Jesus told them that he was returning to the Father. His words to them are his words to us as well – “I will not leave you orphans.” Through the gift of the Holy Spirit we are united with Jesus and the Father. It is in the power of the Holy Spirit that we encounter God’s grace through the Sacraments and are empowered to continue Christ’s work in our world: The task of clothing, feeding and assisting those who lost everything in the “Honey Creek” recently. We can feed the hungry by supporting the East Troy Food Pantry, or leaving a meal on the porch of someone we know who could use it. We can support and encourage the lonely and isolated by making a phone call to our neighbors and checking in on them. We can pray for those who need healing and for the First Responders and Frontline Workers. There are many ways that the Spirit is alive and working among us and hopefully we recognize that same Spirit within each of us. We continue working on the plans for resuming public Masses; we just have not finalized any of it at this time. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to call me. God’s blessings to you all – Fr. Mark

Witnesses for JesusThis journey of faith is not always easy.

Sometimes the greatest wounds are those we suffer when family

members and friends wander away from God and leave us be-

hind. The faith they had when they were younger is now strained,

or they see the daily walking with Jesus to be too difficult. For

them, Jesus becomes what Peter wrote about when he described

Jesus as the stone that causes people to stumble and the rock that

makes them fall. Our journey is hard enough, but watching a

loved one stumble and fall is heart-breaking.

What are we to do in such a situation? Most importantly, we

pray. We must realize that God is more powerful than us, and

even if we can’t make them see the truth, He can. Then we wit-

ness to the transformative power of Jesus by our own lives. We

need to serve him in word and deed. We should let a joy of being

a disciple enlighten our faces. Allow Jesus to work through us so

that others may be drawn to him. Lastly, we must never lose

hope. Many have walked long journeys alone only to find God

far down the road. What will it take to bring someone to Christ?

It might be an action, a word, or an emotion. We never know how

certain people will be touched. That loved one is a gift from God

in your life. Place them back in God’s hands, and let Him pick

them up if they have stumbled and fallen.

Coronavirus Emergency Fund The archdiocese has created a Coronavirus Emergency Fund to help alleviate the financial hardship caused by the outbreak. This fund will support the ministries serving those in need such as food pantries and members of our community who have been severely affected by the pandemic including parents of Catholic school students struggling to make tuition payments. Our neighbors down the street and across the archdiocese need our help at this critical moment. If you are able, please donate to help with these immediate needs: archmil.org/Giving. Thank you.

ARCHDIOCESAN WEBSITE

Www.archmil.org/Courageous-Communion St. John Paul II Office for the New Evangelization at the Archdiocese of Milwaukee has created a new initiative called, “Courageous Comunion: Daily Living for Quarantined Catholics.” This timely initiative serves as an invitation to you to respond with a depth of prayer and motivation to serve others in any way that we are able. There are many resources at your disposal through this new initative. Some of the resources are: Daily reflections from our Bishops A guide for praying with the Gospels each day An at home retreat Guide for online Masses And many other resources You can find these on the archdiocesan website, archmil.org or at the address listed above. God Bless you all!

RESUMING MASSES—DIRECTIVES FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE As you may have heard or seen on the news the Archbishop has given us directives as to how/when we may resume Masses. I urge you to go to our website under Church then COVID news and see the multiple page directives we must comply with in order to resume Masses here at St. Peter’s . This will be quite an undertaking and it will truly take a village if we are to do this. We must provide hand sanitizer, gloves and masks. We have placed our order but they are on back order. If you or your company have gloves or masks or even hand sanitizer you would like to donate, please give the office a call and leave a message with Mary Ann (642-7225, ext. 3). Also Heidi is heading up our sanitizer team. We must remove all paper from the church and sanitize the pews, kneelers, and washrooms after each Mass. It should only take a few minutes if we have many hands. Please give Heidi a call at 642-5703 if you have questions about the team or if you would like to volunteer (even just once) or donate cleaning supplies. We will be limited to the amount of people we can have in the church to celebrate Mass and we are meeting to see how to divide up the seating. We will keep you posted as to our progress so we can pray the Mass together once again.

Dear Lord, we come before You confident that You know our needs,

And that You are present with us this very moment.

You know our fears, confusion, loneliness and pain.

You know what we worry about and what keeps us up at night.

But although many things in life don’t make sense to us, Lord,

We know for sure that You are always with us and will never leave us.

Our faith teaches us that when we are in pain of any kind You are closest to us.

Please give us, Lord, the firm belief that all things fit into Your divine plan,

And that everything that happens really does happen for a reason.

May Your own prayer of trust and surrender to the Father always be ours:

“Into Your hands I surrender my spirit.”

We rest in this prayer, Lord, and pray it in Your holy name. Amen. Penned by St. Peter’s Deacon Greg

Question: I have been going to Mass for years

and have always wondered: why do we make the three

signs of the cross before the Gospel?

Answer: Certainly, many people go to Mass or

other devotions, doing and saying things out of habit

or reverence and not really understanding the reasons

behind some of these things. But everything we do has

a meaning or purpose that helps us to worship better,

proclaim our beliefs, or focus the attention of the peo-

ple on something that has a greater importance or sig-

nificance. A review of the meaning of various gestures

and practices can help us have a deeper appreciation

for what we do.

There is a little prayer that goes with the three crosses

before the Gospel: “May the words of the Holy Gospel

be on my mind, on my lips and in my heart.” In stand-

ing to hear the Gospel, we acknowledge that Jesus is

present, and the words of the Gospel are addressed to

us. All of the gestures and special postures we adopt

before the Gospel are intended to help us prepare for

hearing the Word as well as act on it. The incense, the

Alleluia, the deacon or priest, and the special dialogue

and announcement that introduces the Gospel help us

focus our attention on the Good News we are about to

hear. The three signs of the cross show our desire and

good intention to hear and live the Gospel.

How to Donate Food So It Won’t Go to Waste: (From Reader’s Digest)

Giving is good, but giving smart is better. Once homeless and

hungry, writer Deb Martinson tells us how to donate goods so we make the most impact. Traditionally, those of us who give to food banks will clean out our

cabinets and drop off the rejects. As a formerly homeless person, I’d like to ask

you to try something different this year: Give like a hungry person. If all your meals for the next week were coming from a donation box, what would you put

in there? Here are a few suggestions:

1. Don’t give outlandish things I once received a tub of candied

fruitcake fruit from a food bank. When I ran out of everything else

and ate some, I thought, I am so poor, I’ve been reduced to eating

other people’s rejects. Some food is just too horrible to wish on anyone

else; throw it out instead.

2. Do give no-cook foods. When I was homeless, I didn’t carry my

microwave around. Others have a hard time cooking if their landlord

won’t fix the broken stove or if the power company shut off the

electricity. So give granola bars, crackers, Spam, tuna, peanut butter,

dry milk—anything you’d take on a long hike.

3. Leave food in the original packaging. If it needs to be portioned

out, volunteers at the food bank will take care of it.

4. Think simple. A boxed cake that says Just add water is better than

one that requires milk, eggs, vegetable oil, and whatever else. Instant

coffee is great; ground coffee less so. Also good are multitaskers—

Bisquick rocks.

5. Label special dietary needs People with food allergies or celiac

disease often can’t find donated food they can eat. If you donate gluten

-free food, mark it GLUTEN-FREE in large print. Do the same for

allergen-free items. Clear labeling will help get the right food to the

right clients.

6. Make it easy to open Aseptic—or sterile—packaging and pouches

are better than pull-top cans, which are better than traditional cans. It

sucks even more than usual to be hungry if you’ve got a perfectly good

can of food and no way to get the thing open. And avoid glass jars—

they break too easily.

7. Ask what’s needed The food bank may want non-food items, like

soap, toilet paper, tampons and pads, diapers, and pet food, because

these can’t be purchased with food stamps. I never would have guessed

the food bank near my house needs plastic bags.

8. Check your grocery store Many stores work with local food

pantries to assemble bags of food you can buy and donate for five or

ten bucks. It’s an easy way to give.

9. Be nice I still remember how finding cookies in my bag could make

me happy all day. When you’re poor, small things take on more

significance. Try to include at least one item you’d choose as a treat for

your kids. Someone else’s kids will love you.

10. Consider donating cash Large organizations can get much better

deals on food than you can. With $10, Feeding America

(feedingamerica.org) can provide 90 meals to hungry people. Of course, the important thing is to do what you can. Giving food to hungry

people is awesome, and I love you for it no matter what you donate.
